Ross frowned at his hands. “The Dragonic Embassy will have to be informed.”

  “Why?” I complained.

“Because you are going to give birth to something that will be mixed Race,” Carson said gently. “All your good intentions will not help you if you can’t teach your baby to fly or how to breathe fire.”

  “Good point.”

“Dragons do not make the best parents.” Ross’s smile was comforting. “And there is no doubt that your baby will have the same or a greater abstract that only you can teach.”

“What James means is that he doesn’t think that the Dragons will go to any length to try and get custody of the baby. They may be intrigued because of the mixed heritage and enjoy teaching the baby to see how ‘dragon’ it will turn out to be, but if you want to raise

  it, they won’t argue.”

“And I’ll help.” Ross declared. “And so will Anthony. Not here though. It's better we move to Sardinia.”

“That’s part of Italy isn’t it? I can’t move to Italy,” I protested.

“Why not, Anthony said you got fired,” Ross pouted.

“I didn’t say that!” Carson spluttered.

“We live in a huge beach side villa.” Ross coaxed dismissing his friend and my protests. “Near Alghera. Very pretty. Out of the way, very secluded with private beach.”

“Is any of that true?” I looked to Carson.

“All of it,” he confirmed. “I have a house there too, as does James and Valdine.”

“Valdine is so busy with his nose buried in your sample and his marginal success with a blood substitute that he won’t be leaving Toronto for months,” Ross continued. “At least come out and be pampered for the duration of your pregnancy? Then you can have more time to find another job and won’t have to worry that you are on your own for other things. We'll be there to help.”

“You honestly think Valdine will let me turn his beach villa into a nursery?” I frowned, I couldn’t see it myself.

“We just won’t tell him,” Ross replied.

  “There it is,” Carson grumbled.

“Please,” Ross coaxed again gathering up my hands. “John liked you, Rose wants to meet you very much and I want to make up for my part of the vote that left you to find your colleague dead and your life in danger.”

I looked back to Carson for help but the frown he directed at Ross only confirmed my suspicions that Ross was after something and, like me, he wasn’t sure what.

If the last few weeks had taught me anything though it was that, for good or bad, my soul would never fill up on a diet of bad dates and coffee house break ups.

If Carson wasn’t sure what Ross wanted and their friendship was hundreds of years old I had no hope of guessing the truth from a sofa in England.

If I wanted the truth the only option was to accept his offer and work it out for myself, I had thought that I had had enough adventure to last me a lifetime, but I was now a month along with my next and I was looking forward to seeing it through.

“We just won’t tell him?” I repeated.

  “Exactly.”

“What have I got to lose?”

Ross grinned and kissed my hands, looking as if he had won something special.

Carson groaned softly in protest but his hug was just as delighted as Ross’ kiss.
