Loving the Girl in the Tutu: Uncontrolled Heroes Book 3 Page 9

by KL Donn

I can only nod because I’m so choked up with emotion. Lifting my arm, I show him the pregnancy test, letting it sink in before opening my mouth to speak. But he doesn’t give me the chance. Beckett bends down and lifts me over his shoulder before rushing up the stairs and yelling back at everyone, “Eat and leave!”

I swat his chest when he puts me on my feet again. “I love you, Beckett. Thank you for giving me everything I never knew I needed.” A slow-burning kiss evolves into hours of lovemaking. Only solidifying what I already knew from the day we met.

My heart firmly belongs to the man who lights me up with a single glance.

  My last wish.

  Paris.

  The Eiffel Tower.

  The city of love.

As we boarded our flight seven days ago, I almost couldn’t go through with it. After watching Royal and Beckett during their first dance as husband and wife, everything hit me like a ton of bricks.

  I would never experience that.

My envy reared its ugly head, and I hated myself for being selfish and leaving. But then I remembered the way my parents have suffered, seeing me die slowly over the years. The way Royal cried when she realized we would never have a normal relationship.

Braxton has been a rock through it all. I’m certain that this wasn’t how he envisioned his life going, but he is the most compassionate man I’ve ever known.

He’s given me the trip of a lifetime. We’ve spent most of our time exploring this breathtaking city during the day and making love at night. The worry of my morning awakening ever present.

But unlike before, I know this is it. My final moments on earth and after writing letters to all the people in my life that I love the most, I coerced a promise from Braxton that I'm unsure if he’ll follow through on.

To go get his girl. The way he talked about her, the look in his eyes, he’s so in love it hurts to listen to him speak of her.

Lying in his arms now, I can feel my heartbeat slowing, my pain unbearable, and as I take the last of the morphine given to me, I feel like I’m floating away until suddenly, it’s done.

No more agony. No more illness. No more.

  Just freedom and love.

My very last wish, my sister's happiness, fills my soul as I enter a plane of existence I can't comprehend, and there I find the peace I’ve longed for my entire life.

Death isn’t so terrible after all.

“Mama, watch me!” our three-year-old son, Caden, calls from the water as my husband helps him on the boogie board as he slides across the wet sand and into the calm waves.

Caden has been a water baby since the day he was born. If he could live in the ocean, he would. When he’s not trying to mimic his father, that is. I often find the two of them at the table drawing out sketches that Beck has been commissioned to do on someone’s bike, car, or wall. Caden does his very best to copy his dad.

In the last four weeks, though, since the birth of our daughter Leia, Caden has spent more time watching over our precious girl than in the water. Today, I promised to bring her closer to the ocean, so he could have fun and fulfill his big brother duties.

I wouldn’t say our life is perfect, but it’s damn near close enough that I wouldn’t disagree if someone were to say it.

With summer vacation now upon us, the day is filled with conjoining families. Watching Mac be such a huge influence on his little brother Wheeler and his cousins, Caden, Patriot, and Able—Jace and Calla’s two boys—as he stands in the water like a sentry, ensuring no one gets hurt and helping when needed. You can see the pride in Petal and Cade’s eyes as they watch their oldest son, while cradling their newest bundle–Bentley.

“Pretty fucking lucky, I’d say.” Beckett kisses the top of Leia’s head before stealing her from my arms.

“Perfect,” I tell him, knowing my sister would say the same. “It’s perfection.”

Happiness radiates like a beacon from everyone, and there isn’t anything more I could ask for, even if I wanted to.

  A little about me:

  Perpetual romantic.

  Coffee addict.

I speak sarcasm more often than not.

Gimme an action flick over a romance. But a romance book over action. I'm weird like that.

  Did I mention coffee addict?

  Closet shopaholic.

  Beach lover.

Coffee addict, it bears repeating. Again.

Husband obsessed. Mine that is, you can keep yours.

Mom of 6, well 7 if you count the husband. Oh and 2 of those are a cat & dog.
