Two Hot Dogs With Everything

Page 20

by Paul Haven

In the box seats right behind the dugout were Harold, Lydia, and Max Gurkin, all stuffing heaping hot dogs with everything into their mouths. Mayor Fred Frompovich was making a victory sign in the row behind them.

Sid Canova placed his foot on the pitching rubber and Winning Streak Stadium rose to its feet. The rookieleaned in for the sign from Chico Medley, cradling the ball behind his back.

In the flicker of an ancient television set that had never before broadcast a Sluggers game seven, Danny Gurkin, Seymour Sycamore, and Lenny Pobjoy crossed their legs one by one. As the first pitch flew from Canova's hand, the three fans sucked in a long, deep breath and held it for good luck.

Firstly, I must thank Suzy Capozzi and Kate Klimo, my editor and my publisher, without whose enthusiasm and support this book would have remained a ten-page writing-class submission. I am hugely grateful as well to Vicky Burnett, my wife and unofficial editor, for countless hours spent poring over drafts, debating the plot, and preserving my sanity—often at the expense of her own.

I am also indebted to Zoe Pagnamenta, my wonderful agent and great friend. Finally, thanks to my parents, Susan and Mark Haven, who instilled in me a love of baseball and writing, and an unshakable belief in the power of holding your breath and crossing your fingers when the bases are loaded.
