  Sorcerers

The Ancient Magic chose an elite race to hold the power throughout the centuries. The sorcerers, such as Annloe or his mother Elliana, were the product of this. With a much lengthened life span, they are few in numbers but at the height of power in all of Arathia. There is usually one or two per kingdom, Galdirr being one of the lucky few to have two instead of one. This is due to Romarn becoming one with Galdirr. They keep a youthful appearance, even though Annloe has grey hair, showing an older age. This trait is attributed to his father, who was in fact a human.

There are in fact subgroups to the sorcerers, one of note being the gypsies who live primarily in Serentari, though they have been known to travel in Zathora and Galdirr on occasion. Annloe by many standards would actually be one of these instead of a pure Sorcerer as he has a human father. However, his way of life makes this line. Sorcerers prefer living in areas such as temples or castles and prefer not to travel unless needed. Gypsies, however, band together in groups and travel once every hundred years. Another difference is that Sorcerers practice their magic much differently than Gypsies.

  Free Striders

These wanderers comprise of mainly Galdirrian firebloods, but in some cases outcasts from other kingdoms such as the Free Strider Zerienne. Upon becoming a Free Strider, they cast aside their names, taking on new ones as they travel, looking for work as they can find it and staying out of trouble. At times they band under the leadership of older and wiser Free Striders, though for the most part they stick to themselves. They are free spirited people who wish to make their own decisions and not be held down by the leadership of a corrupt kingdom.

Free Striders have a sense of honor and dignity, a sort harm none and no harm shall come back to you mentality. They’re reserved and tend to sleep on the road or in inns, careful not to spend too long in one area in fear of being discovered for whoever they once were. Free Striders train themselves in survival skills such as hunting, cooking, and self defense. To become a Free Strider, you must first find another to train you and accept you into the “group.” After a few months to a year of training, the Free Strider is free to go and do whatever they like.

  The Elvish Language

Elvish is a basic and ancient form of language. It is a language used more by firebloods than the common person. Of course, it is a main language in Serentari, subsequently home of the Elves. Unlike most other Elven languages, the Elvish of Arathia is very simplistic and easy to grasp. Verbs aren’t conjugated but rather the meaning is implied based on the context. Words are shorter. However, speaking this language can be trickier than actually translating it.

The Elvish language is a lighter language, meaning it’s spoken freely and not harsh. The words flow together. One word flows straight into another, most breaks only at the end of a sentence. Some basic patterns in Elvish are easy to find, and help with pronunciation.

The vowel ë is normally found at the end of a word, and just means to stress it. Aslë, which means “with,” has this vowel and is pronounced simply “ahs-lay.” It’s a long sound like the English “say.”

Double consonants, like “rr,” are common, such as in “Galdirr,” or “Latorro.” This just means to have more stress on that consonant.

“X” is also common, and is pronounced “chi.” The word “xem,” which means “from,” is pronounced “chi-em.” Below are a list of the most common words in the language, including all of those seen in the book.

  The Elven Lullaby

Adam is often seen humming a certain lullaby that is unknown the crew. This is actually the most common Elven lullaby, and he probably grew up hearing it all the time. It was common place for Elves to sing this to each other no matter the age when one was going to bed or just couldn’t sleep. In case you wanted to learn this song, here follows an English translation.

Let the moon and stars shine brightly

  Let your head rest lightly

As the sun goes to rest

And the night cleanses your mess

/>   Rest your head weary child

Let the night be soft and mild

As your dreams bring you peace

And fear bothers you the least

The world is quiet and sleeping

  The mermaids no longer leaping

From pools of water crystal clear

As the fairies watch and cheer

  Let your head rest rightly

  Against this pillow lightly

  As the final rays fade

  In a glorious display

As the moon shows its head

Come you now to this soft bed

As the world joins you in your sleep

So you may dream your dreams to keep

When you wake here I shall be

Waiting for you, you shall see

So rest your head, rest your head

Come you now and go to bed.
