  It has been a tough sixteen months away from Emily and the calls have been less in the last six months. I remember, with a smile on my face, our last conversation which was four months ago.   “You are part of our night ground patrol, we have been given the location of a prime target. Get geared up, we are out in ten.”

  Our platoon is waiting outside and the noise of the black hawk coming into land fills the air. We jump aboard and within minutes we are airborne.

  The platoon is edgy and no one is joking around like they normally do. This operation is one of the most important we have been sent on. Even the joker of the pack looks sombre. I catch Mathew’s eyes and he half smiles at me. I don’t have a good feeling about this, everything seems so different to other patrols. I can sense the nervousness in the air. Paige nudges me and whispers. “What the hell is going on?”

  I can see she senses the same thing as I do. “I don’t know but whoever the target is we need to be on point. Eyes open and always on guard, right?”

  I smile at her. “I’ve got your back, we do what we need and get the hell back to base.”

  “Right on, we both want to go home and we both have people who want us back safe and sound.”

  She smiles and I can’t help but grin as a thought of Emily runs through my mind. “Yes, we do and I am going home to Emily and getting married, you are getting married and meeting your son.”

  I squeeze Paige’s hand and then we are brought to attention by Rowan.

  “Okay, we have a mile of rough terrain to cross before we get to point A. We go in two’s and keep your fucking eyes open. You have the night vision goggles, we need to be alert, we are heading into treacherous grounds. We have no way of knowing how many guards there are for his protection. Our orders are simple, take them down, they will shoot to kill so you get in there and take the shot when you must. They will not go down easy, we stick together and go through what we did in training. This is our biggest test and most dangerous so far on this tour. We have eight in this platoon and I want to have all eight of us back in this chopper at the end of this mission. You hear me?”

  “Sir, yes sir.”

  “I can’t hear you.”

  “SIR, YES SIR.”

  We disembark the chopper and each one of us turns on the night vision. Paige taps my shoulder and I nod. We take off over the terrain, we are vigilant and our guns are raised. We tread carefully and just in front is a steep incline. Rowan signals to stop and we all halt obeying the command instantly.

  “Right over this incline is where our target is. We need to be quiet and try to get past the guards as quickly as we can, you all have your knives and back up guns. You follow my lead and no matter what happens, we finish this mission. Stay in formation, do not break ranks. Do you all understand?”

  “Sir, yes sir.”

  “Let’s move out.”

/>   We are just about to move out when we spot movement to our left. As we look closer, they are in the same formation as us.

  “What the fuck is this?”

  Rowan looks around and spots the Sargent of the other platoon and I can tell that they are friendly. He orders us to hold and signals to the other platoon so that they don’t fire at us. The Sargent quickly sprints over to us. “What the hell are you doing here?”

  “We have our mission infiltrate and extract.”

  He eyes Rowan and curses. “We have the same mission, something is wrong. Why would they send two platoons in?”

  “Fuck knows, maybe they are expecting more problems with the extraction, we are just lucky we didn’t open fire against ourselves.”

  “There are sixteen of us now, how do you want to play this out? Who takes lead?”

  Rowan looks at us and then back at him. “We go in wider formation, take the outside guards quickly and quietly. Then move inwards the worst part will be entering the compound, we don’t know how many will be in there.”

  He nods in agreement. “Quiet and no gunfire unless absolutely necessary. The less time these bastards have the better. Who is your best hand to hand combat soldier?”

  He looks at us and grins. “I have two that I would trust with this, Charlie and Paige.”

  The other Sargent is taken aback that he would choose two women but swallows any thought of going against his wishes.

  “Okay, you two take out the two guards on the right. I’ll send my guys to take the guys out on the left. You and I, Rowan will take out the two in the middle. You must put them down, do not hesitate because they will kill you. The rest of you wait for our signal and we will take on the compound.”

  Rowan nods and looks at Paige and me. “You heard him, do not hesitate, watch out for each other, if something goes amiss, you send the signal, got it?”

  “Yes, sir.”

  “The rest of you stay out of sight, do not make a sound, wait for the signal and then come in behind us.”

  “Sir, yes sir.”

  Paige and I head out and make our way close to the guards on the left. We watch as the others do the same. My heart is pounding in my chest and my adrenaline is pumping at the highest level it has ever been. We watch the two guards approach they have two guns but we know we can quickly disarm them with our training and our martial arts backgrounds. Once they have gone a few feet past, we make our move. We attack so they can’t signal for help. Quickly with kicks and punches, they are disarmed. The guard I attacked has multiple broken bones and his comrade in arms is not looking too well either. We gag and tie them up with cable ties and drag them out of sight. We signal to Rowan and they signal to the other awaiting platoon members.

  Paige looks at me, brushes her hand over her split lip and grins at me. “Nice shiner.”

  We join our platoon and go through the next phase of our attack. Foot by foot, door by door, we move through. Shots are heard and we are caught in a massive gun battle. Paige stays close by me and we fire when needed. We see a couple of our men wounded or killed as we go along but we need to complete the mission. The noise and smell is so intense that I almost forget to breathe. Finally, we apprehend our target and he is brought out of the compound. We are still on guard as we are making our way out. The choppers are already grounded for us and we make sure to bring our wounded and fallen back with us.

  We are almost at the chopper when I notice movement and turn to see a boy no more than sixteen run at us with a gun. He sets off fire. I see and hear the shot. Without thinking, I jump and push Paige out of the way. “Gun!”

  I feel hot pain in my side and arm as I fall to the ground hearing even more gunshots. Paige crawls over to me. “Fuck Charlie, it’s going to be okay, just stay with me, we will be back at base soon.”

  I look up at her and see blood from her arm. “You got hit.”

  Rowan and a couple of others get me into the chopper. I feel hands on my side and a tightness in my arm. I feel so tired and weak. “Paige…Paige…tell Emily I’m sorry and that I love her.”

  Chapter 28

  I’m in the garden with Ellie when a car pulls up. We both stop what we are doing and look to see who it is. A massive smile comes on my face and I jump up and run to meet my mom. She is barely out of the car before I am hugging her.

  “Mom, what are you doing here?”

  She grins at me and looks over my shoulder to Ellie. “Well Ellie invited me here for the week and your father is away with his friends so I decided I would come along and I get to see you too. I believe that’s a win-win for me.”

  “I’ve missed you too. So, what are we doing?”

  Ellie takes off her gloves and wipes the hair out of her eyes. “We are planting some sunflowers and roses and I want to dig out a nice veggie patch too.”

  My mom’s eyes widen. “You are doing all of that today?”

  Ellie laughs and shakes her head. “No, we will do these plantings first and then we will break for tea or coffee and I have made my signature sticky toffee pudding.”

  “I didn’t know you made sticky toffee pudding.”

  Ellie grins and shrugs. “I did it yesterday before you got back from the movies. I wanted to have something nice today when Gwen arrived.”

  “You knew mom was coming and you didn’t even tell me. Even when we were talking for hours last night, you never let on.”

  “I had to keep it a surprise. I promised your mom that I wouldn’t let on that she is coming. I wanted to tell you numerous times but I kept it in somehow.”

  “Wow Ellie, you are sneaky. I’m so happy I have my two moms to hang out with. It’s going to be a real girly week and I can’t wait. Charlie would love having us all here…”

  My voice catches in my throat as I think about Charlie and my heart aches from missing her. My mom pulls me tight against her.

  “She hasn’t called yet?”

  I shake my head and wipe the tear that falls from my eye. Ellie sighs and squeezes my shoulder. “I know this is hard honey, she will call as soon as she can. It doesn’t make it any easier but when Tony was deployed, I went six or eight months before hearing from him. When he did, he told me that they were in the mountains and had no way of contacting me. When he got back to base, he had loads of letters from me and he told me that they were like Christmas and his birthday together. He called and we laughed and cried and he was so rugged looking but he looked good. He just made my heart soar. So even though it’s been a while that you have heard from Charlie, she is always with you in your heart and thoughts and she has you in hers. It’s cliché but you are both connected and that can’t and won’t be broken.”

  Gwen smiles at Ellie. “I agree, I have never seen a connection quite like yours and Charlie’s. I saw how she looked at you and that girl worships the ground you walk on. She won’t be ignoring calling you, it’s because she can’t. She will be missing you just as much. You give her strength every day as she gives her strength to you. Hold on to that connection, don’t doubt and don’t fear.”

  “I’m allowed to worry, it’s my job, she will be my wife and she is god knows where, doing god knows what. I just want her home again.”

  My mom pulls me into a tight hug. “Of course, you’re allowed to worry but you can’t let that worry consume you. You are stronger than you think and she needs you to be strong. She knows you will worry because she knows you and she will worry about you too sweetie.”

  I sigh knowing both mom and Ellie are right, I j
ust miss her so much.

  “Come on, let’s have some tea and pudding and Emily I have the best hot chocolate for you.”

  My eyes light up at the sound of that and my mom starts to laugh. “I think you have a winner there Ellie.”

  I take mom’s bags from her and we go inside, leaving the planting for later. We wash up and are treated to the most beautiful sticky toffee pudding and hot chocolate. Ellie and mom have coffee while we are all talking like we have known each other forever. My mom and Ellie are like sisters, by the way, they talk and are so relaxed with one another. Normally it would strike fear in you when your in-laws get on so well, but I actually love it. Our families have just bounded together and have become one. It’s all fitting together the way it should. It’s a dream come true and I know Charlie will love how close we all have become while she has been deployed.

  We all sit around the kitchen table laughing and joking. Mom pipes up. “How about we go for a relaxation day, massages and pampering? I think it’s just what we need to de-stress and have a nice girly day.”

  Ellie claps her hands. “Oh, that sounds wonderful, I could definitely go for a massage and pampering, it has been a while.”

  They both look at me expectantly as I am taking a drink of my hot chocolate. I set the cup down and laugh. “You two are like big kids and I think if I said no, you would leave me behind anyway.”

  They look at each other, laugh and both say together. “Yes, we would.”

  “Charming, it’s nice to know where I stand with my two moms.”

  “Come on, drink up and I will call ahead and tell them what we want to be booked in for. This is going to be fun.”

  Ellie jumps and lifts the phone making the call. Mom comes beside me. “You are doing excellent darling, I’m so proud of you and I know Charlie is and will be incredibly proud of you.”

  I smile softly. “Thanks, mom, is this the way you feel about dad?”

  She grins at me and blushes. “Ever since the first minute I saw him, I knew he was the one for me. It took some time but I made him mine and when I did, I knew he would never leave my side. He loves me unconditionally and what I would say to you is every day with Charlie, find new reasons to fall in love all over again. I see you and Charlie together happy for a long time. I see the love you have and you are both so well matched it’s in the stars baby girl. You two are meant to be together.”
