All those things never occurred to Ian; but what did occur to him, at least for a split second, was his recognition of, Old English 800 - Malt Liquor branded artfully across the trucks trailer.

Three days later still
Alarm buzzers occasionally were doing what they do. Sub-quiet beeping sounds continuously emitted from various monitors. The patient laying in the hospital bed was neatly fixed to an assortment of sensory transmitting leads and an IV drip sprouted from the top elbow fleshy part of his right arm. Looming about in the private room, hovering above the patient was a man who had been with the patient off and on, for a week.
“I hope you can hear me. I can’t keep my little secret, a secret any longer. Ian, I’ve gotten for you, a new fury companion. I took the liberty of naming him, Scout. Ian, his mother and father were Scout’s. He’s Scout’s twin, with the same police training and well, here’s the best part. I used one of my gifts to well, he has all of Scouts fond memories of you. Ian, for all intents and purposes, he is your dog, he is, Scout. Zoey too, she’s coming to see you. When I told her of your, apparent condition, she insisted on coming. Her flight arrives in a few hours. These fool doctors say you’re not going to live. But I know who you are. You are Ian McDermott, monster hunter. Together our stories have crossed oceans of time. One day men will look back and say, it was we who gave birth to the twentieth century and beyond.”
Alarms began blaring as Ian’s heart monitor flat-lined. Clayton instantly pushed the buttons he’d seen the nurses operate time and again to silence the alarms. With infinitely more attraction than any moth to a flame, wild-eyed, Clayton began closing on Ian’s jugular, as he whispered, “All that we see or seem, is but a dream within a dream.”
