  Acknowledgments

We are so deeply grateful to everyone who helped us along the crazy path of first time authors. Without your help, love, and support this book would not exist. You know it, we know it, and now we’d like the world to know it.

  From Krista

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to…

My Kevy, who waited so patiently while I disappeared into these pages for months.

Andy Elkin, who so kindly did not freak out when I told him I was writing a book instead of a TV show.

My mom, Aysha, who inspires me every day to keep questioning the medical establishment and to keep seeking natural and organic foods and medicines.

Sue, Mary, Katy, and Emily, who supported this idea with wild enthusiasm and saved me this year, one Sunday at a time.

Natalia, Gail, Carol, and Toia, who, along with Kimberly, brought me here.

My sister Kaili, who read the first draft and cheered me on, and my sister Sydni, who babysat a lot so I could write. My sister Jenn, who is actually a shrink and is still so loving and patient when I try to pretend I’m one too. My brother Tony, who always makes me laugh.

My stepdad, John, who lovingly snapped my fat “before” photos even though he thought he was just taking my picture.

My stepmom, Saba, who says “you’re so wonderful” even when I’m not feeling wonderful, and my dad, Bob Verne, whom we both still miss terribly.

Beverly, Bob, and Kristin Maynard, and all my in-laws who so kindly understood when I showed up for an hour and a half of a weeklong family vacation.

Star Michael and Blanca Hernandez, who take such wonderful care of us every day and overtime.

Peter Paige, who is my one and only Peter Paige.

Shonda, Hammer, Tony, Joan, Debora, Allan, Jenna, Zoanne, Stacy, Bill, Pete, Austin, Elizabeth, Moira, Sonay, and Meg, the Grey’s Anatomy tribe, who loved and mocked me and helped me through a whole new onslaught of book-related neuroses (and who make me laugh really hard every day).

  Every teacher I’ve ever had.

And Az, who is so truly generous and who was kind enough to help me get way less fat.

  From Az

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to…

Mum, whose enthusiasm for anything I take on is unparalleled and whose hugs make the world melt away.

Mike, who took Jazzie and me on as his own and made us laugh until we cried.

Jazzie and Ted—my greatest pastime growing up was to make Jazzie laugh—thanks for making it so easy, and thanks to Ted for bringing such joy to one of the greatest people on this earth.

Krista Vernoff, who continually inspires me.

Adam and Andie Skovron, who always see me as my greatest self and lovingly let me know when I’m being less than who I can be.

The Collins tribe: Greg, Mandy, Kristen, Griffin, Jasper, and Charlie, who made “Coming to America” the easiest decision.

Phil and Woody, who make being an adult bearable by always letting me play like a kid.

  My auntie
s, Meg and Gila; growing up with the Nelson ladies was one of my greatest joys. Thanks for showing me so much life.

My American family, who so generously adopted me: Jesse, Jojo, Kate, Kristen, Sammy, Peter, Brooke and Tom, Jana and Billy, Krista and Kevin, Mandi and Greg, Michaela and Casey. It’s been an absolute cracker!

Finally, to the thousands of people who have inspired me throughout my life, some I knew personally, some I never met. I apologize that I didn’t thank you in the moment, and I promise that I’ll take that on as my “New Habit” for it is these acts of inspiration that make the world such a magical place to live. Thank You!

  From Both of Us

Thank you so, so, so much…

Lisa Sharkey and Amy Kaplan, our incredible editors, who simply rock in every possible way.

Lisa Shotland, Rich Green, and Jamie Mandelbaum, who know a lot of stuff we don’t and helped enormously.

The wonderful Mandy Collins, who introduced us.

Stacy McKee, Brooke Blanchard, Greg Collins, and Andie Skouron, for their artistry, speed, experience, and generosity.

Every friend and friend of a friend who played the game with passion and offered us their time, feedback, wisdom, questions, photos, recipes, and quotes.

All of our expert contributors, who so generously shared their wisdom and counsel on the pages of this book.

Blain Bovee, our brilliant astrologer, who said “write the book!!!” (www.BoveeAstrology.com)

Mickey, Jana, Kevin, and Anselm—the original players. We would like to note that the girls have still not paid up on those show tickets.

And a very special thanks to Tammy Duffy, who researched and read tirelessly for months and really, truly made this book possible.

  Advance Praise for

  The Game On! Diet

“Reading Game On! is like spending a day in the writer’s room with Krista Vernoff—funny, candid, foulmouthed good time.”

—Shonda Rhimes, creator of Grey’s Anatomy

“The Game On! Diet is a smart and balanced health and fitness plan in a fun, competitive, and highly motivating format. It doesn’t get much better than that!”

—Dr. Zoanne Clack, writer/producer of Grey’s Anatomy

“Game On! is transformative for many reasons, but what I love most about it is: even if you lose, you win. Plus, Az is inspiring and Krista is FUNNY. Have you ever read a health book that really made you laugh? No. You haven’t. You’re lying if you said yes. But this one will make you laugh.”

—Michaela Watkins, actor, Saturday Night Live

“The thing about Game On! is you can use it to accomplish whatever you want. You want to get in shape? Done. You want to eat right? Done. You want to learn how to prioritize the important things in your life? Done. It’s like the perfect mix of your favorite board game, a great workout, and the kick in the ass we all need from time to time.”
