“Greg, are you asleep?”
“No,” Greg answered, wondering how she’d react if he told her he didn’t want to sleep and miss a moment of feeling her naked and warm next to him. “You should be, though. We have a long drive ahead tomorrow.”
Eight hours of highway until they hit Leyton’s Headland. Until they got home.
“I can’t stop thinking about Bryan.” Greg had told her about their face-off at his house and their late-night drive to rehab. He’d told her that he thought Bryan had turned a corner this time, and he hoped to hell he was right. “I’m sorry you went through that. I’m sorry for the both of you.”
“It’s okay. He’s going to be okay.”
“I know, because you’ll help him.” Penny craned her head around so she could kiss him on the jaw. “You’re a wonderful man, Greg Danvers.”
“You’re pretty wonderful yourself.”
The fact she was lying here feeling sympathy for a man who hadn’t treated her well was proof of how forgiving and kind Penny was. Forgiving, kind, funny, generous, sassy and beautiful. How did he get so lucky? He cupped her jaw and kissed her, stroking her tongue with his and feeling the desire for her that always simmered beneath the surface flare to life once more. She melted into him, writhing until her ass rubbed against his rapidly swelling cock. Greg covered her breast with his hand, molding it in his palm until she whimpered.
“Wait,” she breathed. “Your mother’s home now.”
“This is a big house. She’s half a mile away.”
With that dismissal, Greg rolled onto his back and drew Penny with him until her knees were astride his and all that glorious skin was draped on top of him. Penny moaned, seeming to like what she was draped upon, because she rocked her hips into his and kissed the breath out of him. Greg gripped her hips, grinding into her, fully erect and more than worthy of the insatiable descriptor Penny had already used once this evening.
“Wait, wait,” Penny implored, dragging her mouth away from his. “I’m trying to talk to you, and you’re distracting me.”
“You like the way I distract you,” Greg said with absolute confidence as he lifted his head and drew her pointed nipple into his mouth.
“Dear Lord, yes, I do,” Penny said, arching her spine and feeding him her flesh for a few glorious moments before she pushed at his shoulder and forced him back into the pillows. “Greg…try not to be so goal-oriented for once and listen to me, please.”
He let out a sigh and put his libido on hold. For the moment. “Okay. Talk.”
In the moonlight that came in through the French doors, he saw her bite her lip. “I know you were joking earlier about us moving in together soon.”
Greg didn’t refute her, although he had certainly not been joking. He kept his own counsel though, because he didn’t want to get into a debate about the timeframe while he was this hard. It might distract her from the sex thing, and that simply wouldn’t do.
“But for the sake of argument, say things go well for us and we move in together someday, you ought to know something.” She looked very serious all of a sudden, and Greg’s heart stopped. “I would never abandon the cats.”
For a second Greg thought he’d misheard her. “You’re worried I don’t want to live with the cats?”
“You said you never wanted to get another pet.”
He’d said a lot of things—he’d said he’d never fall in love again, or want another relationship. He’d told himself he’d only allow himself one night with Penny, but that had been an impossible rule to follow. “Penny,” he said with mock seriousness. “Don’t you know by now that lawyers are full of crap?”
Penny rolled her eyes. “Not you.”
“Yep. Me too. Except when I say I love you. That you can believe, every time.” He skimmed his hands over her waist, looking deep into her eyes. “I love you, and I know you and those nutty felines are a package deal.”
Her lips eased into a smile, one that beamed bright enough to rival the moonlight. “If it makes it any easier, Maleficent likes you. She likes you more than me.”
“That’s hardly a high bar.”
“Still.” Penny grinned and kissed him on first one cheek, then the other. “You’re impossible not to love, lawyer man.”
His heart swelled with love for her. So did his dick, which was getting to a point of no return. Greg wound his arm around her back and pulled her close, deepening the kiss until she was breathless and needy, and they rolled together in the sheets, loving each other, and Greg knew that with Penny, he truly was the man he was supposed to be. A small-town lawyer, the part owner of three very unusual cats, and—one day—a doting, loving husband.
For he was going to ask Penny to marry him, when the time was right. After her family had gotten to know him and—pray to God—approved of him. He knew he and Penny would have a few kinks to iron out on the living-together front, what with them being very different and all, but iron them out they would. Or else they’d live in slightly rumpled chaos, and he’d learn to chill about dishes being left in the sink or cats reclining on the furniture.
In fact, that sounded perfect to him.
