Lady and the Champ

Onyx laughed and shook his head. “I believe it, bro. But… I think my fighting days might be over.”
“What?” Fabian and I both looked at Onyx in wide-eyed disbelief.
“You’re gonna stop boxing? But—” I asked.
“But why?” Fabian cut in. “What will you do instead?”
“I don’t know.” Onyx shrugged. “But I’m not about that life anymore. I’ve got some money saved up—enough to be okay for a while. I could start my own gym, maybe train other guys. But I’m done being in the ring. I’m ready to settle down and…” He looked over at me and grinned. “And maybe start a family someday.”
“Wow,” Fabian said, but I barely heard him.
I couldn’t focus on anything except the words Onyx had just said.
Ready to settle down. Maybe start a family someday…
It was as if he’d read my mind—and helped me get over my fears, just like he always did.
“It’s funny you say that,” I said, pausing to clear my throat. “That part about starting a family? Because, um…”
I let my voice trail off as I looked down and put a hand over my belly. It took a moment, but I heard both men gasp.
“Babe,” Onyx said, crossing the short distance between us and taking me into his arms. “Are you serious?” He started laughing and kissing me. “Is this for real?”
I was laughing and crying and kissing him back, but I stopped long enough to nod my head. “Yeah. It’s real. You’re gonna be a dad.” I looked over at my brother. “And you’re gonna be an uncle. And Faye will have a little cousin to play with.”
Neither one of them said anything for several seconds, but it was okay. They didn’t have to. I could see the happiness shining through on both of their faces.
Onyx was the first one to break the silence. “I can’t believe it,” he whispered. “I’m so lucky. You make me so happy, baby… and now we’re gonna have a baby.”
“I’m the lucky one,” I said, repeating the words I’d been telling him for weeks. “And even luckier now that I get to share a child with you. You’re gonna be such a good dad.”
“And you’re gonna be the best mom.” Onyx kissed me again. “We’re gonna be a family. I love it, but it doesn’t feel real yet.”
Fabian’s voice cut in. “Oh, it’ll feel plenty real when that baby starts crying in the middle of the night and you don’t get any sleep for like… a year. Trust me. Been there.” He grinned. “But congratulations. You both deserve to be happy, and I’m happy for you.”
“Thank you.” I nodded, because he was right.
We—all of us—deserved to be happy.
I’d finally found my happiness, my love, my everything.
I deserved it. I’d earned it. And I was never going to let it go.
Lauren’s Epilogue
Two weeks had passed since I had found out the news that would change both of our lives—that I was going to have a baby.
Every day that we’d been together, I found myself wondering how I could’ve possibly been lucky enough to have this man in my life, and every day I’ve thanked God for him.
Onyx was constantly surprising me, constantly giving me new reasons to fall in love with him all over again. I hoped not to ever run out of those reasons, and I didn’t think I ever would.
We’d already started to feel like a family, but now we would actually become one, and it sort of blew my mind that our love had created a tiny life.
Even though my body hadn’t visibly started to change much yet, one of Onyx’s favorite things to do was to put his head to my stomach and listen, or talk to the baby that was growing inside me.
He really was perfect in every way, and definitely perfect for me.
“Oh my God, you guys,” Fabian rolled his eyes as he sat down with us at the small dining room table in his apartment. “This is supposed to be my party, remember? My birthday? You guys are looking at each other like you’re on your first date or something. Get a room.”
“Do you have a spare bedroom here?” Onyx asked, glancing over at my brother with a grin. “Because we’ll put it to use, if that was an invitation…”
“Gross.” Fabian shook his head. “She’s still my little sister, man. And that was definitely not an invitation for the two of you to do anything in my apartment. I feel like I might get pregnant just from the way you two are looking at each other.”
I laughed. “So dramatic. But fine… we’ll behave. Mostly.”
Onyx nodded, standing up and walking into the kitchen for a moment before returning with a cake in his hands. “And finally, for the birthday boy…” He smirked. “You realize this is the first time I’ve let myself eat cake in years? I knew that retiring from the ring was a good idea.”
“About that…” Fabian said. “I wish you’d reconsider, man. I mean, I get that you want to be around for your kid and all that—I really do get that. But boxing is in your blood. It just doesn’t feel right for you to walk away from it all.”
Onyx shrugged. “I think it is the right move, though. But listen, I don’t think I could ever completely leave the sport. I was serious when I said I’d probably open my own gym. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea.” He looked over at me, then added with a wink, “Maybe even with a dance studio attached.”
“You’re gonna need someone to run all of that,” Fabian said. “Someone with business sense, I mean.”
Onyx shook his head. “Nah. Why would I go find someone like that, when I’ve got you?”
It took a second for the words to sink in, but then Fabian laughed. “Ass. Are you serious, though? Me and you? Partners?”
“Yeah, why not?” Onyx nodded. “We’ve already been business partners for years anyway. This will just be a different kind of business, but still familiar enough for both of us that I don’t think we can possibly fuck it up too badly.”
“I’m in,” Fabian said. “One hundred percent in.”
“I’m all-in, too,” Onyx said. Then he looked at me. “And that brings me to my next question.”
He dropped down to one knee, and fished a small box out of his pocket, then took my hand. It all happened so quickly that it took me a few seconds to realize what was going on, but when he opened the box and I saw the sparkling ring inside, my mouth fell open.
“Oh my God,” I whispered. “Is this really—”
“It’s really happening,” Onyx said, looking up at me with the biggest smile I’d ever seen. “Lauren, baby, you’ve made me the happiest, luckiest man alive, and I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to thank you enough.” He took a deep breath and plucked the ring from the box, then slid it onto my finger. “But if you’ll do me the honor of becoming my wife, I swear to you that I’ll never stop loving you, and I’ll never stop trying to make you feel just as happy and lucky as you’ve made me.” He paused for just a moment, cleared his throat, and asked, “Lauren, will you marry me?”
My throat was tight and my vision was blurred from the tears that had started to fall, but nothing could stop me from nodding, nor from finding enough of a voice to say, “Yes, yes, oh my God, yes. I’ll marry you tomorrow. Tonight. Any day and every day. I love you so much, Onyx.”
“I love you, too, baby.”
Fabian gingerly stood up and lifted Faye from her highchair at the end of the table. “And we love you both.” He looked at Onyx. “There’s nobody else I’d rather have as a brother. And I know you’ll take good care of my sister.” Then, with a grin, he added, “Now, back to me and my birthday. Let’s eat some cake!”
I was still laughing and crying at the same time as Onyx stood up and took me into his arms. “Can I hear it again, baby? That ‘yes,’ just one more time?”
“Yes,” I said. “Absolutely yes. That’ll always be my answer to you, no matter the question.”
He bent down to kiss me, and I could feel him smiling against my lips. Everything we had gone through together had led us to this moment, and I was grateful for all of
it—the good and the bad—because it had brought me love. It had brought me happiness.
It had given me a family again.
Onyx’s Epilogue
As happy as I was to spend time with Fabian, I couldn’t wait to get Lauren home. I’d barely closed the door to our apartment behind us before I was kissing her, touching her, letting my hands roam over her body.
“It feels like it’s my birthday,” Lauren said, giggling as my hand slipped up under her shirt to cup one of her perfect breasts. “Maybe we should get engaged every day, if it’s got you like this.”
“Okay,” I said, leaning in to kiss her before adding, “Every day works for me.”
I wanted to kiss her again, to do more than that, but not here in the hallway. I took her hand and led her back toward the bedroom. “Do you know how happy you make me, baby?”
It was a question I’d asked her before, but one still couldn’t stop asking. Every day that we were together felt like a new beginning to me, and now that she was going to be my wife?
Yeah, it felt like I might never top this feeling.
“Hopefully as happy as you make me,” she answered, pausing once we were in our bedroom to wriggle out of her clothes in record time before helping me with mine.
My gunshot wound was healing nicely, but I still had a limited range of motion. I missed the days when I could pick her up and hold her tight as she wrapped her legs around me. But we’d get back to that point soon enough.
For now, I was more than happy to have her hands on my body, helping me remove the last bits of clothing until we were both standing there naked.
“You’re so beautiful,” I said, pulling her close.
Her body was soft and smooth and tender, and I couldn’t get enough of it. I needed to feel her against me, skin on skin, as much as possible.
She didn’t answer—she just whimpered into my mouth as I kissed her, then reached down between us to stroke my cock with her soft, delicate hand.
I rolled my hips forward, thrusting against her hand as I explored her mouth with my tongue. I never got tired of her beautiful body or her amazing mouth, even though I knew every inch of it by heart.
She broke away and climbed onto the bed, bending over to point her delicious ass at me. “I want you inside me, Onyx. I need it.”
“Fuck, baby, I need it, too,” I growled, reaching out to grab her by the hips and pull her back to the edge of the bed. “But not like this. I want you on your back. I want to look at you while we make love.”
She rolled onto her back and spread her legs, locking them behind me as I stepped closer and lined my cock up with her sweet pussy.
She moaned, loud and long as I slid inside her.
“You feel so fucking good,” I said, rocking my hips back and forth as I slowly slid in and out. “So tight and warm and wet.”
“Harder, Onyx,” she moaned. “Faster. Please.”
She was writhing on the bed under me as I pulled out and pushed back in, arching her back and calling my name as I slammed into her harder and harder with each long thrust.
The way her pussy gripped my cock felt like warm velvet, like heaven, and when I looked down and watched my cock slide in and out of her, it was almost enough to push me over the edge.
“That’s it,” she panted. “Just like that. You’re gonna make me come, Onyx.”
“Come, baby.” I didn’t stop, didn’t slow down. “Come with me. Now.”
She cried out and tossed her head back as I erupted inside her, filling her. My vision blurred, and narrowed as the orgasm rushed through me, leaving me panting and sweating and so perfectly exhausted as I leaned in for one more kiss.
My cock was still hard, still inside her as I lowered myself onto the bed next to her. I never got tired of the way it felt to be inside her. I would’ve slept that way if I could’ve.
But just knowing that now we were engaged, that we were going to share forever together made it feel even better. Even more special.
Having Lauren in my life was a dream come true, an answer to my prayers. She’d shown me how to live, how to laugh, how to love.
We’d been through hell and back together, and I knew there was nothing we couldn’t face. And with her by my side, I knew there was nothing we couldn’t overcome.
We completed each other. We took care of each other.
We were perfect for each other.
