“Hell, yeah.” Sophie said, pulling her phone out of her bag. “I’ll just let the wife know I’ll be home in a state.”
“Me too,” Mags said.
Text messages were fired off as Bobbi set the shot glasses in front of them all. Jac picked up her glass and grinned as she read out her slogan. “Keep calm and stay not a grown-up.” Nodding, she added, “Oh, that is so me.” She looked at Mags. “Come on, what’s yours say?”
“Keep calm and put the kettle on.” She sniffed. “Bit boring, that one.” She looked at Bobbi. “What’s yours say?”
“Keep calm and eat the brownie.” Bobbi grinned and looked at Sasha. “Any left about the place?”
“If there was, I wouldn’t recommend eating them now. It’d have been there for weeks. You’d likely be getting a mushroom ride to go along with the hash.” Sasha held hers up to read: “Keep calm and dance like nobody’s watching.” She grinned. “Nice. What’ve you got, Soph?”
“Keep calm and wait for the other shoe to drop.”
“That was Mum’s favourite. After her op,” Sasha said.
“She was so twisted. I love her.”
“Me too.” Sasha knew her smile was sad when the faces that smiled back at her looked like they were fighting back tears. She shook her head and held out her glass for Bobbi to fill with vodka. Everyone else followed suit and watched Sasha.
“To Mum. There’ll never be another like her.” She swallowed the shot as the group around her toasted to Fleur, drank their shots, and set up the game.
Laughter rang around the walls as they recounted tales of Fleur’s stoner antics, picked their markers, and the five of them played long into the night.
“Wish you were here to see this, Mum,” she said under her breath as she passed Go for the third time, collected her cash, and downed her shot.
She was more than a little merry as she shuffled over to Jac and cuddled into her side, Jac’s arm about her shoulders.
From somewhere in the universe, Sasha felt Fleur answer, “I am.”
About Andrea Bramhall
Andrea Bramhall wrote her first novel at the age of six and three-quarters. It was seven pages long and held together with a pink ribbon. Her Gran still has it in the attic. Since then she has progressed a little bit and now has a number of published works held together with glue, not ribbons, an Alice B. Lavender certificate, a Lambda Literary award, and a Golden Crown award cluttering up her book shelves.
She studied music and all things arty at Manchester Metropolitan University, graduating in 2002 with a BA in contemporary arts. She is certain it will prove useful someday…maybe.
When she isn’t busy running a campsite in the Lake District, Bramhall can be found hunched over her laptop scribbling down the stories that won’t let her sleep. She can also be found reading, walking the dogs up mountains while taking a few thousand photos, scuba diving while taking a few thousand photos, swimming, kayaking, playing the saxophone, or cycling.
