  CHAPTER ONE

There were two crumpled and sticky one dollar bills plastered to the bar when Allison went to grab her tip from the only two guys to have been sitting there for hours. She'd been mixing whiskey sours for them all night, and they'd walked out after leaving her a pathetic two dollar tip on a hundred dollar tab.

"You look like you're about to hurt someone," said Walter, the owner of the Oakwood Tavern. He also happened to be her brother.

"I don't know how I'm going to make rent with this," she said, waving the bills at him. "I'm already getting notices about late tuition payments, and now I might be kicked out of my apartment."

"I'm sorry, Ally." He fiddled with the bar rag in his hands and frowned. "Look around the place. We're just not getting the customers we used to. Ever since that new bistro lounge whatever opened up across town, none of the college kids want to come here anymore."

"Most of those kids were dicks anyway. They didn't tip well, and they were always staring at my ass."

Her brother grinned and flicked the rag so that it draped over his shoulder. "You know you'd get better tips if you tore the neck of that shirt a little farther open."

"Thanks, asshole. I'm not going to slut myself out for a couple extra bucks in tips. Besides, it's going to take a hell of a lot more than that to get me out of the hole."

"I can advance you another month of pay if you need."

Walter's expression was grim, and Allison knew he didn't have the cash to lend her. She'd already let him advance her two months’ pay, and she wasn't going to pile more debt onto an already bad situation.

"I appreciate that, Walt, but I think maybe it's time for me to think about putting school on hold again."

"Ally, you're twenty-eight already. If you put it off again, you know you won't go back."

Allison looked around the bar, hoping to spot a customer waiting for a drink so she could get out of this conversation, but the place was completely empty.

"I don't know if I'm cut out for that, anyway. I thought Early Childhood Education would be a good program for me, but you should see the way those other girls look at me. I mean, I love kids, but there aren't exactly a lot of preschool teachers with full sleeve tats, you know?"

"I don't know what to tell ya, sis. It's your life, but I don't want you to spend the rest of it stuck here with me. The bar is my thing, and I'm happy to go down with the ship if that's what it comes to, but mom and dad would have wanted better for you. I know you want better for yourself."

A loud rumbling noise penetrated the din of the rock music blaring over the bar's speakers. It was almost immediately recognizable as a group of motorcycles, and that meant customers. It also meant there was a good chance of trouble before the night was through, but at this point, Allison would take a bar fight and a couple of broken chairs over a night where she made less than twenty dollars in tips.

She watched the men file into the bar and was happy to see that there were nearly thirty of them. They spread out and fell into available seats, and within minutes the Oakwood Tavern was more bustling and lively than it had been in years.

"What can I get you?" asked Allison as she approached the biggest table with the biker who looked like he might be in charge of the gang. She hadn't had that much experience with biker clubs, but she knew how to spot someone holding court. The guy was tall and loud, his huge black scraggly beard only adding to the wild mischief his eyes conveyed.

"Let's start with twenty-five pitchers," he said. "And food. You got any meat? I could really go for a steak."

"Our kitchen closed an hour ago--" Allison began.

"I think we can manage something," said Walter. "If you don't mind waiting for me to fire the grill up, I can bring out whatever y'all want to eat. Steak and fries?"

"There's a good man!" roared the biker. He stepped towards Walter and clapped him on the back. "The Hellclaws appreciate your hospitality. Isn't that right boys?"

"You tell 'im, Mike!" yelled one of the bikers in response. Everyone hooted and hollered, banging their fists on the tables and howling at the ceiling.

"Who wants steak?" yelled the leader of the gang.

Nearly everyone's hand shot up, and Walter took a quick count and scratched the number down on a pad of paper.

"Alright," said Walter. "Gimme a few minutes and I'll get those out quick as I can. How do you all want those steaks cooked?"

"Bloody rare," grinned the biker called Mike. "That'll go for my boys too."

Allison hurried to the bar and set up a row of pitchers. She slapped all four taps open and saw grinning bikers waiting to take them away the second she placed the full pitchers on the bar. By the time the last pitchers were filled and on their way to the tables, the first ones were coming back empty, ready to be filled again.

"Y'all must be thirsty," she grinned at the guy waiting for her. He had short brown hair and was one of the most handsome men she'd ever met. She felt her cheeks flush red when he smiled at her, something in his eyes making her stomach flutter wildly.

"We've had a long ride," he said. His voice was as smooth and warm as wild honey. "But we've got some business here in West Liberty, and it looks like we're going to be staying a few days. I hope you and your boss don't mind us taking over the place."

"It wasn't like we were turning away customers," she replied. "I think we'll be happy to have you guys here if you can keep from wrecking the place."

"Oh, you don't have to worry about us," he said with a grin. "We're as polite as they come."

"For a biker gang," she teased.

"Those are some nice sleeves, you get those done locally?"

Allison held out her arms, rotating it so he could see the full pattern. "No, I've got a guy in the city. Why? You want to get some work done?"

  "Thinking about it," he replied.

Beer flooded over the edge of the pitchers, sudsing and cascading into the drip tray and splashing all over Allison's legs.<

"Shit," she said, slamming the taps off.

"First day on the job?" asked the handsome biker.

"Not exactly. It's just been a long day."

"Well, it's been nice to chat with you..." he looked at her expectantly.

  "Allison."

  "I'm Craig."

"I think your friends are waiting for those beers," she said, nodding towards the rowdy group of bikers trying to get Craig's attention.

"Buncha animals," he joked. "If it's just you and your boss working, you let me know if you need help controlling these guys, okay, Allison?"

"I think we can handle it." She crossed her arms in front of herself, squeezing a little in a way that she knew pushed her breasts into a flattering position. "But I appreciate the offer."

"Now, I do believe you can take care of yourself better than most." He grabbed two pitcher handles in each hand and threw her a smile before returning to his table.

"Shit, Allison," she said to herself. "That boy is not good for you. Do not even think about letting him sweet talk you."

"You say something?" said Walter, poking his head out the service window.

"Just happy that our night turned around. With all this food and beer going out, this should be our biggest take in a long time."

"Tell me about it," he said. "I just wish I hadn't sent Ricky home. I hate working the grill."

"Well get your ass back to it." Allison threw a lime wedge at her brother, narrowly missing his face.

"Yeah yeah," he grumbled. Walter turned away, and she heard the sizzle and pop of a basket of fries going into the deep fryer.

Allison filled four more pitchers and went to deliver them to any tables she saw were running low. When she got to the main table, the guy with the big black beard stood up and took one from her.

"Thanks, darlin'. My boys ain't giving you no trouble, are they?"

"Perfect gentlemen," she said. One of the bikers belched loudly, sending everyone into fits of howling laughter.

"You won't get no trouble from us," said the leader. "The Hellclaws know better than to do stupid shit like mess with a pretty bar girl like you, or else they're going to get a smack-down from Mike American."

"Mike American?" she echoed, trying to suppress a smile.

"That's me," he grinned. "I love this country so fucking much, I changed my last name. It's legal and everything."

"Show her your driver's license," shouted one of the bikers.

"That won't be necessary," said Allison, holding up her hands in protest. "I believe you."

Mike American placed his hand on her shoulder and guided her away from the group to where it was a little quieter. It wasn't the sort of thing she'd normally let a customer do, but there was something about him that made her feel at ease.

"Craig told you we're going to be in town for a while?"

  "Yeah, he mentioned it."

"Well, we need a place to hang out while we do a little business here. I saw you don't normally open up until eleven, but you think you could sweet talk your boss into cooking us up some breakfast tomorrow morning?"

"Since my boss is also my brother, I'm pretty sure I can twist his arm into it."

"Good to hear," Mike said with a broad grin. "We'd also like to pay cash while we're here. That going to be a problem?"

"No problem at all," she replied. "You guys have ordered a huge amount already. I'll talk to Walter about getting you a discount."

"Don't worry about it,” said Mike. "I'm happy to pay full price. Besides, you look like you could use the business."

"Yeah, it has been a little slow lately."

"Well, I plan to get shit-faced drunk tonight, so you talk to Craig about money later, okay? He'll take care of whatever we owe you."

"Will do," she replied. The ding of the service bell drew her attention, and she saw several plates of food up on the counter.

"You feed my boys first," said Mike. "I'll take my food once they've all got theirs."

  "Whatever you say, Mike."

"First, let's pull me another pitcher, okay?"

Mike followed her to the bar, but instead of letting him veer off to the customer area, she nudged him towards the staff side.

"As long as you're here, you get staff privileges," she said. "You know how to work a tap?"

Mike American grinned and laughed a deep belly laugh. "Honey, I've been drinking beer since before you were a horny thought in your daddy's brain."

Allison laughed despite herself and let Mike pour himself a pitcher while she collected the plates and delivered them to the closest table. Mike had a few more up and ready by the time she got back, and she peeked into the kitchen to see him sweating over a grill loaded up with sizzling meat.

  "You okay in there?"

"I burned my arm on the grease and dropped a steak on the ground, but aside from that, I'm doing just great." He wiped sweat off his forehead with a filthy cloth that she hoped he wasn’t using for anything else. If a health inspector walked in right now, they wouldn’t be impressed, but Allison didn’t think any of the Hellclaws would care, as long as they got a big steak and a pile of fries.

"Keep 'em coming, and then you can get out there and help me run drinks. These guys are downing beer faster than I can pour it."

"Should we call Becca in to help out?"

"Nah, she said something about a date tonight anyway. Besides, how long can they go?"

Allison spun around to go check on their customers.

  CHAPTER TWO

According to the clock, it was just past eleven thirty and Allison was exhausted. The Hellclaws had only been in the bar for two hours, but they put away food and drink like nothing she’d ever seen. It was as though they hadn’t eaten in weeks, and despite the massive quantities of beer they’d been downing, they never really seemed to get as drunk as most customers would have. It was near midnight when she finally had a moment to pull out a stool in a quiet corner of the bar to have a moment of rest from the constant running back and forth, but no sooner had she sat down than she noticed Craig’s piercing eyes watching her from his table.

He stood up and walked towards her, standing awkwardly close instead of sitting on the nearby stool. He leaned in as though to be heard over the music and noise, but Allison knew a move when she saw one. It wasn’t that loud in the Oakwood Tavern, and there was no need for this guy to be standing in such a way that his thighs touched hers.

“Mike said I should talk to you about settling up,” he said, leaning in close and laying a hand on her shoulder. He smelled of leather and sweat, but in a way that made Allison swallow in nervous anticipation.

“Yeah, um, I’ll have to look up how much your tab is.”

She thought about pulling away, but only for a second. Getting close to customers was never her thing, but then again, getting close to anyone wasn’t exactly a strength of hers. Her best friend, Miriam, was always trying to convince her to loosen up a little and to enjoy her sexuality, but random hookups just didn’t feel right to Allison. Not usually, anyway. There was something about Craig that was making her reconsider her stance on making out with customers in the bar.

“We’re not in a rush,” he said. He smiled at her and let his fingers brush along her bare leg. When she made no move to push him away, he lay his hand on her thigh and slid it up towards the edge of her cut-off jean shorts. “I’m glad we pulled into this particular bar.”

“I am too,” she whispered. Her heart was racing, and she glanced over her shoulder to see if Walter was watching her. Thankfully, her brother was busy clearing tables and loading things into the industrial dish washer.

“Since we’re going to be here for a few days, I was wondering if you’d let me get to know you a little better.”

Craig’s hand slid further upwards, his fingers moving down to her inner thigh and pushing up against the edge of her shorts. Allison could feel his hot breath on her neck, and she decided in that moment that she wouldn’t be going to bed alone that
night. This guy was gorgeous and polite enough, and he looked like he’d be able to give her the kind of one-night stand that could tide her over through the long gap before she got up the nerve to sleep with another guy. Despite Miriam’s insistence that Allison was smoking hot, she had very little confidence in herself and found it impossible to approach guys. Tonight would be different, she promised herself. Tonight she’d let this happen.

“I think I’d like that a lot.” She put her hand over his and pulled it up even further, until his fingers were right up between her legs, pushing against the warmth of her moistening sex beneath her shorts.

Craig’s lips brushed against her neck, and he kissed her jaw and cheek on his way towards her lips. His fingers worked against her, teasing her through her clothes until she could think of nothing else but letting him strip her naked to fuck her right there on the bar. She wanted to feel his mouth on hers, and to have his muscled body pressed up against her more than anything she’d desired in quite some time.

Something changed in the Oakwood Tavern, and suddenly the only noise was the sound of the music coming over the speakers and the clinking of Walter shoving glasses and plates into the dish washer. Even that stopped too, as the eerie quiet seeped into the kitchen and her brother realized that the mood had changed. Craig went rigid and pulled away, a pained look in his eye when he whispered a soft apology and walked away from Allison, leaving her breathless and turned on in a dark corner of the bar.

She watched the bikers gather up their belongings and get up to leave the bar. It took less than two minutes for all of them to file out the door in relative silence, deadly serious looks on their faces as though they were marching off to war. So stunned was she that it wasn’t until they were gone, and the bar was as empty as it had been before they arrived, that she slipped off her stool to go clear the last of the tables so she could go home and forget about this crazy night.
