“She telling the truth?”
“C’mon, man,” Micah said with a shrug. “She’s—I don’t know her.”
“He and I went to high school together. He dropped out of college. He…” Micah turned around and grabbed Mya’s arm. Pulling her away from the bar, he hissed.
“What the hell are you doing!”
She yanked her arm away and slapped his face. The sting caught him by surprise. He had never been punched before much less slapped, and definitely not by a girl. Mya hadn’t held back.
“That’s partly because you will never grab me like that again, and partly because you’re being an ass and have not returned anything from me!” She shook her hand in pain. “You think that you can just throw me away because you’re feeling pity for yourself. You’re not the one in the wheelchair.”
“Exactly!” Micah yelled back. “The drunk driver hit my side of the car. How am I not the one in the wheelchair? Why am I okay, and Kyle isn’t?”
“Because,” Mya said with her emotions slowly coming into check. “You’re meant to do great things, and you can’t do them in a wheelchair. You’ve got to decide whether you’re going to do them on not. No one is going to feel sorry for you, Micah. No one. I tracked you here to tell you that. You can either listen or—you can be worse off than your brother. He’s only paralyzed with his body. You’re paralyzed in your mind.”
She stopped talking. Micah rubbed his jaw but didn’t respond. Mya ran her fingers through her hair. She shook her head.
“Either way, I think what we had is probably unhealthy. I’ve got places I want to go, and I can actually go. But whatever we had—it can’t go with me.” She was breaking up with him. They weren’t a couple in the official sense of the word, but Micah knew that he had been unfair to her. She had been there for him even being away at college. She had tried. He had pushed her away.
Mya stepped forward and kissed the same jaw she had just slapped. “I truly hope you find the path that you are supposed to go. Maybe, we’ll cross paths again.”
She backed up a few steps and gave him a small smile before walking away.
And that was the last time Micah saw Mya Dornel.
Epilogue
The car door slammed behind her as she jumped inside. This was just what she needed to bring these bastards down, but she had to be smart. She a small fish trying to swim in a big ocean with big predators. Mya grabbed her phone. She should call L.A. Then she shook her head. No. L.A. was too fragile right now. As much as she wanted to help her, there was no telling what she would do.
Mya scrolled through the pictures on her phone just taken that night. It broke her heart watching everything--really seeing everything that went down. This was what she wanted to stop. People who thought that they could buy anything and anyone they wanted. People who got away with it.
Starting her car, she began to drive back home. Tomorrow, she would take them down. Now, her husband was probably wondering where she was. The drive home was filled with running situations through her head. It was only as she glanced in the rear view mirror that she realized she the car behind her had been behind her for a while.
Your mind is playing tricks on you, Mya. You’re just worked up over everything. But as she kept driving, she realized that the car was still following. Maybe, she wasn’t being paranoid. She started to speed up and take different random turns. The car still followed. Shit!
The car suddenly began to speed up on her. Mya looked around. Without knowing it, she had pulled off the main roads and was on a side road, and there were no other cars in sight. She put her foot to the gas, but the other car was faster. Pulling up beside her, the car started moving into her lane trying to force her off of the road. Mya let her car push into the side of the other one. For a few seconds the two vehicles battled until oncoming headlights flashed in Mya’s face. In that instant the other car braked while she was still pushing against it, and before Mya could react, her world went upside down.
