  Abby and Kent

  Christmas Day

Abby was dancing around to Christmas carols as Kent put croissants, raspberry jam, and orange juice on a tray. Kent wanted her to eat some breakfast while opening presents.

“Come on, Daddy. Move it. Move it. Move it.”

“So bossy.” He winked at her as he carried the tray into the living room. She clapped her hands at the sight of all the gifts under the tree.

Kent placed the tray of food on the floor as she knelt and grabbed a gift. Wrapping paper went flying as she pulled it off.

“Daddy! This is awesome!” she cried as she saw he’d bought her a remote-controlled pink car. That was followed by a big box of Legos. And a new doll and several sets of clothing.

More gifts were unwrapped in between Kent coaxing her to eat. Once she’d opened gifts for her Little, she moved to gifts for big Abby. And she handed him his presents that she’d bought. Giving was even better than receiving in her opinion. Once the presents were all unwrapped, she started arranging all her toys into a pile.

“Thank you for my gifts. I was spoiled.” She leaned over to smack his cheek with her lips.

“You deserve to be spoiled.” Standing, he grabbed something from in the tree. She stared in surprise at the Christmas cracker. She’d seen them before, of course but she’d never bought any.

“I’ve never pulled one of these before.”

“Take hold of one end and pull. Whoever gets the bigger end, gets the gift inside.”

  “Ooh. Fun.”

She took hold of the other end, tugging hard. To her shock, she actually won the bigger part of the cracker. But she felt bad that he didn’t get anything.

“Here. You have it, Daddy.” She held it out to him.

“No, baby girl. You take it.” His face was soft. Tender.

She turned the cracker and shook it out. Shock filled her at the ring that landed in her palm. It was a round blue sapphire, with a cluster of diamonds on each side. She’d never seen anything more beautiful in her life.

Raising her eyes, she looked over at him. “Kent . . .”

“Abigail Reynolds,” he said solemnly. “Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife. So I can love, cherish, and protect you for as long as we both live?”

  “Yes. Yes, I will.”

Abby flung herself into his arms and he caught her. Like he always did. And always would.

  Best. Christmas. Ever.
