  The highway stretched out in front of the Cadillac and Charlie took the big machine up to 65, heading west into the night. Needles was three hours away. She could get a hotel room there and be in Los Angeles the following evening. The excitement she felt was slowly but surely pushing down and replacing her grief. She did everything in her power to put Caroline and what happened in Boulder City out of her mind. The thing she kept coming back to, more so than killing Caroline and more so than leaving her life in Flagstaff, was the feeling of that little girl against her chest as she carried her to the police station. Her warmth and the steady rise and fall of her breathing, and the sound of her sleepy voice, as she told Charlie that she smelled like Disneyland.
