Catch Me if Yukon

“Do you see that?” I pointed in the approximate direction. “A shadowy thing in the trees. It’s moving to the left.”

“Your eyes may be better than mine, bella.”

  “Do you have your phone?”

He placed it in my hand. I focused on the shape and captured it in frame, then expanded the image to a magnification we could both see.

  “Merda,” swore Etienne.

“What does this look like to you?”

  “Merda,” he repeated.

“I can see how it might be mistaken for a tree…but trees aren’t usually ambulatory, except in Tolkien movies.”

“The press would love to see this.”

“They’d have a field day, wouldn’t they? All the time they spent hounding Dad would not have been in vain.”

  “Should we alert your father?”

  “Nah. His phone’s broken.”

We watched the shadow lumber to the edge of the tree line, then pause, almost as if it was staring back at us.

“So what are you going to do?” asked Etienne.

I looked from the readout screen to the woods, then back to the screen. “Only one thing to do.”

I hit the little trash icon on his phone and watched the screen fade to black.

I could hear the relief in Etienne’s voice as he whispered against the curve of my ear, “Exactly what I was hoping you’d do.”
