Kade’s finger flicked across her clit, distracting her from her thoughts and sending her body into a state of urgency. She was already so wet that sloshing sounds of her hot sex filled the room as he continued to finger her pussy.

“Kade…” His name came out on a breathless moan.

He flicked his finger across her little nub, plucking at the sensitive flesh, which never got more than a day of rest. She ground her pussy into his hand. Her body was on fire. There wasn’t a part of her that didn’t feel as if an inferno were ripping through her. She wanted to feel him inside her. Him thrusting and filling her were the only things that would cure the emptiness she felt at times like these.

Her thigh brushed against his cock and she felt his thickness through the denim, so hard and heavy as it jutted toward her. She licked her lips, envisioning pre-cum sitting on the tip of his cock head. Just that alone, the very thought of the pearlescent treat, was more than she could bear.

“Uh-uh. Not this time.” Abruptly, she pushed him down on the bed, hovering over him.

She unsnapped his jeans and pulled down the zipper. He lifted his hips, helping her while she tugged the denim and briefs down his thighs. His cock sprang up from behind the constraints of the fabric. The long vein that ran along the underside was like an imaginary trail, telling her to go on a journey, using nothing but her tongue.

Her clit throbbed painfully as she stared at the pre-cum dripping down the side of his cock. It called to her to lick it off. Suddenly and impatiently, she pulled the pants off his other leg and threw them toward the hamper. In quick motion and not a moment too soon, she was on the bed, straddling him his cock. Her body was hunched over as one hand grasped his hardness and her mouth closed over the thick, engorged head.

  “Oh fuck…Treece…”

He grabbed onto her head so forcefully, she could already sense him losing control. His taste was exotic, so musky and full of his pungent flavor. There was something primal about it, as if it fed a part of her soul she never knew had been malnourished.

She explored him with her mouth, allowing her tongue to swirl around him while sucking him far back into her mouth. Her pussy clenched. She knew she only needed a little bit more. Just a touch of friction, a single touch and her liquid heat would explode. She had to push her own selfish needs aside. This was for Kade, the man who made her feel safe enough to finally breathe again.

He raked his fingers through her hair. Noises tore from him that she had never heard him make before. She loved hearing him, knowing she was the reason for it. Pleasure was all she wanted to give him. All she wanted was for him to experience pleasure, for the two of them to forget the outside world, if only for just a short time, and disappear with one another. All of these thoughts and wishes coasted through her mind while she continued to love him with her mouth.

She stroked him with her hand while simultaneously sliding her tongue along the long vein on the underside of his cock. He laid thick and heavy in her mouth, her jaw already tiring from his size.

For several minutes, she explored him with her mouth. Learning every inch of him, she steeled her nerves against his size and did all she could to take him deep.

Kade said something, but what it was, she had no idea. She was enjoying what she was doing far too much to actually stop for anything. His body bucked and she gagged as his cock hit the back of her throat. Closing her mouth tightly around him, she continued to hold on. He kept moving, thrusting into her as she sucked him off. The sounds that echoed in the room were unlike any she’d heard before.

Once again, Kade tried to tell her something, but she didn’t stop to listen. His hands were wrapped gently in her hair, covering her ears while easing her head up and down on his cock as he continued to fuck her.

She couldn’t recall a time when she felt so completely overwhelmed by a man and her feelings for him. He awoke every part of her. Even in Patreece’s young and naïve years, Carl hadn’t managed to cause even a fraction of the amount of passion Kade did with so little effort. Her wetness coated her inner thighs. Her pussy ached and felt so empty without him inside her.

  “Treece…listen to me!”

That time she’d heard him loud and clear, but she still couldn’t stop. Her cheeks burned from the way he stretched her, yet she would not relent. She used her tongue, gliding along his veins, working her mouth against the rigid texture of his cock. Everything she was doing, she was doing for him. He was the one man in the world she could actually envision giving her entire self to. No more holding back, no more secrets. If he wanted them, she would give him her heart and soul.

“Treece, if you don’t stop, I’m not going to be able to, either.”

She ignored him, refusing to stop. What he warned her of was exactly what she wanted. Her need to taste his release, swallow and drink him up was stronger than anything else. She wanted to be the very reason he couldn’t hold back and spilled into her.

“Oh fuck…!” His hands tensed, his hold on her tightening. His fingers dug into her scalp. His hips thrust wildly, forcing his cock deep into the farthest recesses of her mouth. He shouted something incomprehensible. Then it came, that moment of euphoria she had given him.

Once the first splash of his release hit her tongue, she was instantly struck with the pungent flavor it created. Her taste buds all but exploded and unfamiliar sensations crawled through her body. The feeling sent her appetite to ravenous. She breathed in deep through her nose and waited for the rest, promising herself she would swallow every last drop he offered her.

Moments later, the room was quiet. Only his breathing surrounded them as she placed a few tender kisses to his now semi-hard cock. She looked up at him as he lay exhausted and sated. Working her way up his abdomen, she sprinkled kisses and licks along his skin. Everything about Kade put her under his spell. She could easily see herself spending the rest of her life with nights just like this. Until that fairy tale came to fruition, she would soak up every inch of him, memorizing each part in case one day it might end.

Though she prayed it wouldn’t. She realized that no matter how hard she tried to ignore the word that hung in the subconscious area of her mind, it wouldn’t go away. Love. It was what she felt for Kade, that special place where her heart went whenever she saw him. The only question was, could be love her back.

  Chapter Twenty-Two

Patreece opened the front door of her house and kicked off her shoes. She set her keys and purse down on the kitchen table before grabbing a bottle of water from the refrigerator. Rolling her neck from side to side, she tried to loosen her sore muscles. In the past, she had never been much for exercise. She kept her thin figure by eating very little to keep Carl from snapping. Being with Kade was the exact opposite. He not only wanted her to eat, almost force-fed her at times, but he also gave her body a workout every single night.

She took a glance around the kitchen, taking in the tools and some of her belongings strewn about. The work Kade had done on her place in the short time she’d been here was now bringing the old and dilapidated home back to life. The foundation was now level and she no longer felt a small incline across her bedroom floor. The pipes were all shiny and new. And next week he would be starting on her laundry room.

Kade had thought he was doing it under the guise of busywork, but his mother couldn’t keep a secret to save her life. His well-meaning, but busybody of a mother had spilled the beans on his special project within hours of telling her. Not that Patreece minded much. She was glad Kade’s parents had accepted her. He had become an important part of her life. She only hoped she had become equally important to him.

She had about an hour before Chuck dropped Rachael off for their daily baking ritual. She sure was going to miss that little girl when the summer was over and the school year began. Chuck’s little princess might not be Patreece’s daughter, but it was fun to practice being a motherly figure to Rachael until Patreece had the opportunity to have a little one of her own.

  Doing h
er best not to get too caught up in another daydream fantasy, she finished her water and tossed the bottle in the trash can. She needed to take a quick shower and then gather some more of her clothes. If she hurried, she could be back before Kade left for the day. The idea of a few extra kisses or nibbles from him was exactly the incentive she needed to get her butt in gear.

Patreece stepped into the shower, turning the water to hot in hopes it would ease her tension. The steam filled up the bathroom as she made quick work of washing her body. The juncture between her legs was sore from their continuous nights of lovemaking. It was only in the hours after that she’d feel sore. When Kade touched her, when they were in the heat of the moment, she never felt an ounce of pain. Not as she had with Carl. Every form of contact from her ruthless ex-husband had been laced with torture and unscrupulous evil.

A few minutes later, she turned off the water and wiped the droplets from her eyes. An odd sense of awareness took hold of her and she stood frozen in the claw-foot bathtub.

She listened for a sound, but only heard the water swirling down the drain. Despite the noise, the room seemed eerily quiet, almost too quiet. The eeriness lingered in the room, but instead of covering her with a blanket of comfort, she could sense the dread pouring down around her.

  Carl.

Just as sure as she thought his name, she heard the distinctive sound of breathing on the other side of the shower curtain. She cowered back against the wall, trying desperately to put distance between herself and the man who stalked her nightmares. Her heart raced and she prayed for God to wake her from this dream. It wasn’t one, though. It was happening. The fear was palpable as her blood pounded inside her head.

The shower curtain flung open, and standing before her was the one man she’d done everything to run from. She screamed with a combination of shock and terror. The happiness she’d felt just minutes before disappeared into the dark eyes that stared back at her.

“Well, if it isn’t my loving wife, Sandra. My ungrateful, deceitful, pain-in-the-ass wife. Or is it Patreece now? That is the name you’re using now isn’t it?”

  “Carl, listen, I—”

“Shut up! Shut your fucking mouth, you whore!” Carl’s words were laced with the rage that reverberated off of him. “It’s so nice of you to finally come home to this…hell hole. Out late fucking around, were you?”

Carl motioned for her to step out of the tub and threw a towel at her. She took it, covering herself in a protective manner. It was the only defense she had at such a vulnerable time. The terrycloth towel wouldn’t be able to keep her safe from the blows she was sure he would inflict on her body. It wouldn’t protect her from the torture she would face.

Abruptly, Carl tore the towel away from her and tossed it on the floor. She made an attempt to swallow her rising fear, not wanting to show her weakness to him. For years, he had tormented her. He’d made her cry, plead and beg for forgiveness. The memory of her former self sickened her. She was nothing more than a pathetic excuse for a woman who allowed him to make her the victim. Never again. He could do whatever he wanted, but she would not cower to him.

“Look at you. All pretty and washed up for your boyfriend, huh? You think you’re going to stay that way? When I’m done with you, no one will have you again. No one!” he shouted.

She heard his threat loud and clear. Patreece wouldn’t be making anything sweet with that sweet little girl, Rachael. She wouldn’t be making her morning delivery of pies and cupcakes. She would no longer feel the exquisite touch of Kade on her body. The kiss they shared this morning had been their last.

Carl was back now. She had greatly underestimated him. It was a hard realization to face, now that she’d finally found happiness. Her stomach sank when it occurred to her she’d had nearly three weeks with Kade. He’d made love to her, touched her soul and made her heart smile again.

For the first time in years, she had learned how to breathe again, and just as quickly as she’d been given the gift of Kade Riley, it was being taken away. The monster she’d fought like hell to escape from had finally caught up with her.

There would not merely be a beating this time. She would not walk away with broken bones and bloodied skin. She would not walk away at all. She saw the fury in Carl’s eyes and knew what it meant. He wouldn’t let her live. This time he was going to make sure she paid permanently.

I love you, Kade. She whispered the words in her mind, knowing full well she would never have the chance to tell him.

  * * * *

Patreece sat on the bed in silence. He’d allow her to wear a T-shirt, but nothing more. She had no idea how much time had passed since her happy world had been shattered. It could have only been minutes, but it felt like an eternity. Spending any time alone with Carl was agony. He thrived on manipulation and inflicting fear.

When she’d first felt his presence, that panic had come back to her. She knew all too well what he was capable of and wished he would just get it over with already. It wasn’t as if he was ever going to let her go. Killing her would at the very least be merciful. Living with him would only place her in an eternal hell.

His angry and silent stare had been wearing thin on her. She needed to say something to gauge where she stood. “Carl, maybe we should talk—”

He stood up and struck her across the side of her face before she even realized what was happening. The sharp blow shot through her head. Painful throbs of heat covered her cheek as it began to swell.

“I’ll decide when the fuck we will talk. I don’t know why you’re so surprised to see me. You should have expected it. Did you really think I was going to let you disrespect me like that?”

“Disrespect you? Are you kidding me? I lived in a constant state of fear from you. You beat me, raped me and still somehow blamed me for everything you did!”

“Shut your fucking mouth.” He charged her and pushed her down on the bed. “You got what you fucking deserved! You’re a filthy fucking whore! Always prancing your shit all over town, acting as if anyone could have you!”

Now on top of her, he straddled her stomach, raining blows on her head. Just as she remembered, his rage could be instantaneous and violent as hell. Hovering over her, he placed his fingers at her throat and squeezed his thumbs into her trachea. Patreece knew there was no way out. She was sure she would die by Carl’s hand.

She started to feel her vision blur. A pain unlike any she had ever felt before coursed through her body. Something warm and sticky ran down her face. Everything was becoming hazy.

Kade. There’s so much I wanted to say to you. I love you.

She couldn’t fight the heaviness weighing down on her any longer. Allowing the blackness to take over, Patreece closed her eyes. There was no way for her to know how much time had passed when she opened her eyes, blinking through the pain in her head and tears which stained her eyes.

“I told you never to disobey me! How many times did I tell you that?” he shouted. “You’re nothing but a filthy piece of trash! How many men did you let into your nasty cunt? How many men did you let fuck your dirty mouth? You think I didn’t know? I knew about it all, you whore!”

She couldn’t tell him he was wrong. She couldn’t beg for mercy. She wasn’t able to utter a single word. Her eyes bulged underneath the pressure on her neck. Her airway was almost entirely blocked as he spat out his words at her. She couldn’t breathe. She sensed his eyes boring down on her through blurred vision. Every bruise, bump and break of her skin had led up to this one and final moment in time. He was going to kill her now. This would be it. She would never see Kade again. The love she felt for him would be nothing more than a memory.

Her eyes closed as she allowed the veil of sleep to take her. She saw stars dancing before her eyes, bright and vibrant ones that swayed behind her lids. Her body felt so much lighter and the pain began to dissipate. Finally, she was out of Carl’s clutches. Never again would she have to live in fear. It was all over with now.

  Chapter Twe
nty-Three

Kade sat with Chuck and Rachael, trying to keep his eyes from watching the clock. Thirty minutes had passed since they’d shown up to meet Patreece. At first, he’d stuck around to keep an eye on Rachael until Patreece came back. He knew she had only gone home to grab a quick shower and get some clean clothes. At most, he’d expected her to be gone an hour. Rarely had it taken her that long, though. He had an odd worry nagging at him. His gut churned and he rubbed at it.

“Rachael, why don’t you go into the living room and watch some cartoons?” Chuck told her.

“Okay, Daddy.” She happily ran to the other room, carrying her favorite doll.

Kade wasn’t stupid. He’d known Chuck most of his life and sensed when something was on his mind. “What’s up?”

“You tell me,” Chuck answered. “What’s going on with you and Patreece? I mean…I know what’s going on. I’m not asking for a play-by-play or anything. Just wondering what you know about her.”

Kade sighed and expelled a frustrated breath. Chuck’s inquiry echoed so many of his thoughts. “Honestly? Not much.”

“That could be a problem, man.”

“I know.” Kade placed his elbows on the kitchen table and rested his forehead in his hands.

He had no idea what he was doing. For all intents and purposes, she and he were a couple. There was no reason to distrust her, either. Still, he had questions. There was a side to her he knew she kept hidden. And it was those unknowns that caused him to lie awake at night. She’d softened so much in the past week. Every so often, he could still see that same Patreece that came to town with a chip on her shoulder. He didn’t know what had happened in her past to cause her pain, but he knew something or someone had.
