Awakening

If Luca had a secret weapon, it was humility. He knew his strengths and his weaknesses. He knew what to fear and what not to fear.
He hesitated, as if wanting to say more—much more—but he remained quiet. Instead he cautiously moved his hand to mine. The touch of his fingers sent a surge of warmth through my body. After the shortest of seconds, he pulled his fingers away, watching our hands as he did so.
He stood, stepping backward toward the door, his eyes remaining on mine. I blinked, breaking his gaze. He turned, retrieving my mud-soaked clothes from the floor.
“Luca,” I called, not wanting him to leave.
He faced me in anticipation, but I could think of nothing else to say.
His eyes became bright as his smile reached them. “I’m glad you’re awake,” he said, watching me for a moment more before carrying my clothes away.
I sat, unmoving, listening to his steps echo off the stone stairwell.
