“You know, this thing is pretty light.” I bounce it to demonstrate. “You can probably carry it up on your own.”
He purses his lips, thoughtful. “I said I’d help, not do all the work.”
“It would be faster without me in the way.” I can play the logic card, too.
His head tilts to one side as he studies me. “But, I like to watch you struggle.”
“And there’s that little bit of asshole.”
He grins and nods toward the stairs. “Up you go.”
I glance back at the matching nightstands and shudder. Whoever designed this bedroom set needs to be shot. If it were mine, I’d have left it behind, too. Curious about my predecessor, I turn back to Kellen. “I’ve been meaning to ask. What happened to your last succubus?”
He studies me for a long moment, the creepy overhead lights casting shadows over his face, before he shrugs. “We ate her.”
