  BELOW Paddy Jones, a colleague of Hembry on Kamuning Estate, narrowly survived an ambush by Communist Terrorists in 1952. The car he was driving, pictured here, was a bullet-ridden write-off, his Malay special constable escort and dog were killed and he himself took four bullets.

  ABOVE Payroll drop, Ulu Remis, 1951. At the height of the Emergency, payrolls for employees of isolated plantations were dropped by air to avoid losing the money to bandits in the event of ambushes on the jungle roads. Drop zones were usually clearings near the plantation manager’s residence.

  BELOW Kamuning Estate manager’s bungalow, pictured in 1950, following renovation works to make it more secure from attack. The ground level of the house, which normally would be open, was boarded up.

  LEFT Harry ‘Uncle’ Hannay, 1954. Harry Hannay served in the Boer Wars and WWI, and was interned for four and a half years in Sime Road Gaol, Singapore, during WWII. He was a mining consultant who called Malaya home and at the time he bade Boris and Jean Hembry farewell on the day of their departure from Malaya, he had not been back to his native Scotland for 40 years.
