  Some of the breeders had been sent to settlements to mate as well. She only hoped life would be better for them outside of their prison—even as that prison was all they had ever known.

  “Mama, when can I teach Troy how to swim?” Tobias asked, plopping down next to her, resting his wet head on her lap and sticking a finger into Troy’s ear, waking the sleeping baby. Rowan watched them, watched how Troy could only stare and smile at Tobias, no matter what the older child did to him.

  “You shouldn’t wake him when he’s sleeping,” Rowan said, pushing the wet hair from Tobias’ forehead.

  “He sleeps all the time,” Tobias said, leaning up onto his elbows to gently trickle water from his hair onto his baby brother who giggled in that way only babies could. “I miss him, you know?” he said, looking up at her.

  The resemblance between father and son was incredible, partly because behind his childlike eyes, Tobias carried a darkness, memories he would not or could not share but that plagued him still. He didn’t complain once, in fact, he seemed grateful for every day, but she imagined the years he spent as likely not much more than a specimen at a colony lab did their damage. She hugged him close at the thought.

  “You’re a great big brother, Tobias,” Rowan said. “Troy is so lucky to have you.”

  Tobias looked up at her, his expression suddenly very serious. “And my daddy is lucky to have you,” he said.

  “Did I wear you out?” Silas asked, plopping down on the other side of Rowan and touching the baby’s face before turning to his older son.

  “I just wanted to check on mama and my baby brother,” he said. “Someone has to take care of them and you were just goofing off.”

  Silas raised his eyebrows at his son’s taunt. “Is that so?” he said. He turned to Rowan and put a hand on her belly. “Am I not taking care of you?” he asked, kissing the tip of her nose.

  “I think we’ve got a fish!” Tobias called out, jumping to his feet. Silas had made a sort of fishing rod they had lodged between two rocks and the string was now pulled taut.

  Rowan laughed. “You’d better go help him,” she said.

  Silas pushed her down onto her back, careful of Troy lying on her belly and chest. “First, a kiss,” he said, his wet mouth closing over hers.

  “Eeeeuuuuwwww!” came Tobias’ voice from the pool.

  They both smiled and Silas kissed her again. “Tonight, he’ll sleep over at Charlie’s. I haven’t had you like I wanted to in too long,” he said.

  “And how is that?” Rowan asked, kissing him back.

  “I was thinking of making you strip down and kneel at my feet to be fed your dinner,” he began, stealing another kiss. “Then setting you on your hands and knees and fucking first your little cunt then your tight little bottom hole.”

  “Silas!” she giggled, blushing red.

  “Any resistance will be met with some time in the corner with my handprint on your ass,” he teased, tapping the side of her hip.

  “You can’t spank me while I’m pregnant,” she said slyly.

  “Don’t worry, I’ve got a list going. We’ll have a nice long session once you’ve delivered my baby.”

  Rowan shook her head, hoping he was teasing. “I still have to pinch myself when I wake up some morning and see you sleeping beside me.”

  “Me too. I wasn’t going to let them take you from me, Rowan, but it’s a hell of a lot easier to live like this than in hiding.”

  “Papa! I have a fish!” Tobias called out.

  They looked over at him, smiling. “He’s really at ease, huh?” Rowan asked.

  “I’m so glad for it,” Silas answered. “Although he won’t talk about any of what happened those years.”

  “Just enjoy him, when he’s ready, he will come to you. He trusts you.”

  Silas smiled, his eyes on his son. When he turned them back to Rowan, they were wet even though he was smiling. “None of this would be possible without you, Hellcat.”

  “You’re still calling me that?”

  “Always, I think. You came out of hell and stole my heart. I love you.”

  “I love you.”
