A Heart's Treasure

She nodded in sober agreement. “I should think not.” The pretended sobriety slipped away and she smiled again, wrapping her arms around his waist and lifting her face for another kiss.

They continued to kiss and murmur words of endearment until they heard rapidly speaking voices, at which they turned curious faces. Summer had come from the garden, and was saying “No!” just as quickly as Michael, trailing behind her, could say, “Please?”

  “No.”

  “Please?”

  “No.”

“Please, you know you love me.”

“I’ve not said so of late.”

“But you don’t deny you do. Say it. Say you love me.”

  “Not today.”

  “Say you’ll marry me.”

  “Why should I?”

  “Please, my darling.”

  “I don’t think so.”

  “Please?”

As the two settled beneath a tree to continue their contest of wills, Genevieve turned to Xavier with a questioning look. “Will any of us be able to bear having such a display accompany us all the way to London?”

“If it means they find love, we’ll bear it,” he said, with something serious behind the humor in his eyes.

“It makes me recall what Summer said just a few days ago. I thought she was talking about you and her. Now I see she knew, even before we did, that you and I were meant for one another. She told me these things always work themselves out for the best, often in ways that surprise us.”

“Once he finally gets her to the altar, it’d surprise me if she and Michael ever again agree on anything.”

“Please?” Michael’s voice floated to their ears.

“Convince me why I should,” came Summer’s voice.

The newlyweds looked at one another and burst into laughter. They held on to each other, already convinced they’d never let go.
