It is uncertain just how deep the conspiracy run, which of course fueled questions in my own mind…and from there the series was born.
The Cato conspirators were known as Spencean Philanthropists and they were people motivated by the radical words of Thomas Spence. They sought to use the seeds of political unrest in the hopes of overthrowing the government. Most of their anger stemmed from a few events: the economic depression and political repression of the period, the Six Acts, and the Peterloo Massacre. All of which are mentioned in The Lady Who Loved Him.
The Brethren organization and the existence of a sub-plot involving Lord Rowley, however, are works of fiction.
