Jake opened his mouth as if he was about to say something, then thought better of it and shut it again.

“And nice Jake and I got back together.”

“And we’re here tonight celebrating our one year anniversary,” Jake said.

“Sort of. I still can’t decide which date we should use. I mean, technically we met at the bachelorette party, but I don’t really remember meeting him until the next night at the wedding, and then we started all over again when Jake bought the beach house, but not really, so—”

  “Sweetheart, she doesn’t care.”

“You don’t?” Samantha asked, looking up.

The waitress smiled. “It’s a great story. I can’t wait to go home and tell my roommate; she loves a good romance. But right now I really just need to know if you want your champagne with your dinner or before.” Then she pulled a notecard out of her vest pocket and read: “Compliments of Whitney Haller, who said to tell you although she never imagined this day would come, congratulations to you both.”

Samantha turned back to Jake. “See, she does like you.”

Jake sipped his water to keep from saying something he might regret. He was getting laid tonight regardless of Whitney’s opinion of him, or his of her.

“And I think we’d like the champagne before dinner,” Samantha continued. “Okay with you, honey?”

  “Whatever you want, dear.”

Samantha looked up at the waitress and smiled. “Version two point oh. They really worked the bugs out.”
