“Sounds cushy.”
“But I haven’t finished my studies,” Ellin protested. “Who’s going to listen to me – I’m just a girl from the bush who did a bit of modelling.”
“Who will be at my side at every corporate dinner, meeting all the movers and shakers. Who will work hard and continue her studies, while building her own career and reputation.”
“With your money opening all the doors.”
“Only the ones that need opening,” he kissed her.
“Then what,” again Coen with the questions.
“I love your sister. I fell in love with her when I was Ryan, and even though she needs time to get to know this Mason character, I want her to know that the only future I see is one where her brothers agree for her to marry a white-fella.”
“Do I get a say?” for the first time, her eyes shone for him.
“Only if the answer is ‘yes’.”
He had waited a long time for Ellin to tell Mason three little words. She was worth it.
6 months later
“South Australian government signed!” Ellin ran as fast as her growing body would allow into Mason’s office, ignoring Tara who politely left the room.
“That’s my wonder woman – what did they end up agreeing to?”
“We can roll out the main program in twenty primary schools with the highest indigenous truancy. We’ll give one term to all kids and monitor attendance to see if it improves with engagement.”
“I’m so proud of you,” he told her, caressing her growing stomach, “But shouldn’t you be slowing down?”
“I will, but it’s my baby.”
“Don’t you think we should be focused on what to call this little one? I’m getting worried that she will have to answer to ‘peanut’ her whole life.”
“I think I have the answer to that,” he looked up at the excitement in her voice. This special child of theirs needed a special name and there was only one that they wanted. But, to use it needed a community decision.
“How does Maali Winters sound to you?”
“Perfect, just like her grandmother and mother.”
With a billion reasons to hate him, in the end she only needed one reason to forgive him. Ellin loved the man, despite the name and in spite of his money. She loved Mason. Her grandmother would be proud
