Roman
Four minutes past six. Dr. Smith was late.
I sat in a chair in the waiting room. The hard plastic dug uncomfortably into my back, and I only just reminded myself not to start fidgeting. I’d always hated doctor visits, and, god, in the last year I’d had more than my fair share.
I looked around the VA waiting room and suppressed a sigh. The Army ran on time. The Veterans Administration? Not so much. It didn’t help me to dwell on it, and besides, I was very much aware of how lucky I was to be here to grumble about a doctor’s visit in the first place.
“Mr. Carpenter?” the perky receptionist asked sweetly. She gave me a honeyed smile when I looked up. “Dr. Smith will see you now.”
“Thank you,” I said, trying to keep the nerves out of my voice. This wasn’t any regular check up with Dr. Smith.
“Oh, it’s my pleasure.” I could tell from the way she flipped her long, cornsilk colored ponytail that she was interested. It had always been that way for me, and I can’t really say I’d ever minded. Well, before, anyway.
She led me from the waiting room, past most of the examination rooms, and into the one at the farthest corner of the hall. Dr. Smith was not yet in the room.
“He’s just wrapping up. Can I get you anything while you wait?” she asked as she handed me the gown I needed to change into, her mouth still caught in a half-smile. She was pretty enough, young, available. For a second, I tried to imagine pulling out my old charm and getting my way, but couldn’t. Instead, all I could think about was how she would react if she saw what Dr. Smith saw, what the surgeons and therapists and nurses had all seen since my injury. I doubted she’d have been as enthusiastic then.
“Thank you, ma’am. I appreciate it, but I’m alright here.” I hoped she wouldn’t push it any further, and I guess she finally understood. Her face slipped back into its semi-detached, customer service position.
“Of course. I’ll let Dr. Smith know you’re ready for him in a few minutes. Let you get changed and all.”
The gowns were scratchy, and I honestly thought they were made to make people feel uncomfortable and exposed, which I did while I waited with my feet dangling over the end of the examination table.
A few minutes later, Dr. Smith arrived.
“Sorry to keep you waiting, Roman. You wouldn’t believe the paperwork I have to fill out after every appointment,” he said by way of apology.
“No, it’s alright, Doc. Just happy you could fit me in as soon as you did,” I said, reaching to shake hands with the man. He’d called last week after my surgeons and physical therapists had sent him my full report and history on my injuries. I stared at the thick file in front of him, the physical symbol of all that pain, hard work, and frustration. From waking up in a field hospital in Malmur and feeling like my skin had been ripped off my bones, to months of my physical therapist, Damien, pushing and pulling and stretching the shiny, scarred skin as it healed—which sometimes made me feel as though the red seams of new flesh would rip open completely.
“Let me give you a once-over and we’ll talk about everything.”
The next fifteen minutes were him inspecting the large, continuous swath of skin that ran from the back of my left heel and wrapped and followed all the way up my leg and torso like some sort of slithering mass—a deep, pitted, scarred snake running all the way up my body and leading into my left armpit.
“The cream seems to be helping with the flexibility of the scar tissue. How has physio been going?”
“Good. Well…better than before.”
Dr. Smith nodded as he allowed me to sit back up. “It’s always a process. Don’t beat yourself up that it’s taking some time. It’s—”
“Gradual. Yeah, that’s what Damien says, too.”
Dr. Smith chuckled. “Exactly.”
He took a seat at the small stool and grabbed my file. “I’m not gonna waste your time, Roman. You know the scarring is still pretty bad. It’s deeper than I’d like, but if you keep making these sorts of improvements, then, if you wanted to, you could potentially re-enlist based on what Damien is saying now.”
I felt a leap in my chest. This was the news I’d wanted to hear. It wasn’t completely positive, but it was certainly moving in that direction, and it seemed hopeful. Dr. Smith’s expression, however, didn’t seem to change from its neutral position. I’d seen enough doctors to know that meant there might be more.
“Is that… Is that all?”
Dr. Smith sighed. “No. There was one other thing.” He flipped to another part of my chart before continuing. “I spoke to Dr. Harrison and he also had some news to report.”
I could feel my nerves returning. Dr. Harrison was the urologist who Dr. Smith had sent me to. On top of the burns and scarring, one of my testicles had to be removed, too damaged to save. At first, I couldn’t really concentrate on what that meant. Everything else was still going on at the time, and I’d been actively trying not to die from the burns. Later, it had sunk in, and I’d felt the loss as something that made me less than whole, less than the alpha I’d been before.
“Oh?” Dr. Harrison hadn’t said anything in particular during the visit. Then again, inspecting another alpha’s junk wasn’t exactly time for small talk.
Dr. Smith nodded again. “Yes. Based on the test and scan results, it looks like your right testicle also experienced damage from your injuries.”
My blood ran cold. “Does that mean surgery?” No, please, not that.
Dr. Smith shook his head. “No! No. Nothing like that.”
I relaxed marginally. “Okay, so what does it mean?”
“It means that, well, and I’m sorry, Roman there’s no easy way to say this, it means your sperm count has been affected. Between that and the orchiectomy, the testicle removal, you may not be able to have children.”
There it was. Out there. Just like that. I’d gone into the military young, so certainly hadn’t expected to have any children before I’d enlisted, but I’d always anticipated, always hoped they would someday be a part of my future.
I was quiet, trying to absorb the information. “I know it’s a mixed bag of news, Roman, I do. But I hope at least now you can start taking some real steps forward to getting back to something that will feel more normal for you.”
I don’t know what I said after that moment, and the rest of the appointment passed in a fog. Before long, I was back outside the hospital again in the weak, spring sunshine.
I started to make my way back toward my apartment in King’s Place, but instead found my feet taking me in the direction of my brother Silas’s house. Silas and I had always been there for each other. When Dad died, it had become a necessity. I was protective of him. He was my little brother, and an omega to boot. He’d married one of the guys in my unit, Garret, a few months ago, and he and Garret had settled in a cute little house on the edge of town.
