  “Leigh.”

“Show me, Harrison,” she whispered, and she was in his arms, with a moan that came from the depths of her very being. The kiss was long and sweet, soft and seductive though she needed no seduction.

“Harrison,” she gasped as he kissed her neck, his lips closing around that sensitive spot on her neck where her pulse beat so madly. She moaned and pressed her body against his, and she loved how she could feel his manhood against her, throbbing against her. She loved knowing that she had done that to him.

She could make him need, too.

“So much,” whispered Harrison, and she knew what he meant, when he pushed her back, nudging her gently against the bed to lay her down on it. He moved with her, careful to keep his weight off her as he moved over her and kissed her again.

Leigh opened for him, wrapping herself around him as if she would keep him there forever. As if she needed him to become a part of her, almost as much as she needed her next breath.

“My wife,” said Harrison, brushing her hair away from her face and pressing a soft kiss to her lips, before tracing the shape of her lips with the tip of her tongue, until she parted her lips again and welcomed him in.

“I need you,” whispered Leigh against his mouth and his hands tightened on her arms. She knew his need was as fierce as his own. He was holding back because he wanted this to be special.

But she didn’t want him to hold back.

“Harrison, please. I need you. I need you inside me. I need you to make me yours. I need you to be mine.”

Harrison groaned, as if he could hardly bare to stand the torture of holding back.

“I want to give you so much pleasure, so much…”

“We have time for that. Now… Now, I need you. Please. Please…”

She begged, her hands moving over his back, sliding underneath the stretched fabric of his boxers to cup his tight ass and pull him closer to her. Her hips strained against him, her legs wrapped around him, and she wanted him to feel the heat of her need from her center, against his manhood.

  “Leigh, I can’t wait!”

“Don’t. Don’t wait,” panted Leigh, kissing him again, kissing his neck, frantic with the need for him as she nibbled at his skin, biting hard enough to make him moan and leave a blooming mark.

“Now,” said Harrison, his voice harsh with the intensity of the moment. She cried out in protest as he moved away from her.

“Take it off. All of it.”

Leigh thrilled at the order he barked out and sat up. With trembling fingers, she undid the hooks of her bra and slid it off her, letting her full breasts spill out for him. Her nipples were already so hard for him, so sensitive.

She shifted to pull her panties off, but before she could roll off her stockings, he stopped her.

“No. Like that. I want you like that.”

Leigh cupped her breasts and stroked them, stroking the taut peaks that needed his mouth on them, and spread her legs for him. She wanted him to see how much she needed him. She would hold nothing back from him.

“My sexy wife,” he murmured, and he pulled his briefs off, leaving him naked. She couldn’t look away from how thick and long he was, how he was throbbing and pulsing for her. She knew how it felt to have him deep inside her, claiming her. She wanted that – she wanted that so much.

Feeling wanton, she lay back, her legs spread, and moved a hand between her legs. She spread her lips for him, showed him more, and moaned as she touched the swollen nub of flesh, slick with her own juices, that needed to be touched and stroked, too.

He looked like he couldn’t speak as he moved over her. His eager mouth found hers, then found her breasts, kissing them, worshipping them with his mouth before stroking his tongue over her nipples. He went on, and on, until she was writhing against him, pressing her womanhood against his hard shaft. When he switched his attentions to the other breast, she nearly sobbed with pleasure as the cool air on her wet nipple added another layer to it all.

  “Harrison, please! Now, please!”

“Yes, now,” he agreed, spread her legs and hooking his arms under her knees, pushing them up until she was open for him, exposed to him, with nothing hidden from him.

“Mine, Leigh. You’re mine. Forever. Say it.”

“Yours. I’m yours. Please, Harrison, I need you. Please, please!”

She was begging, and she didn’t care. When she felt the tip of his manhood, the thick, throbbing head, press against her entrance, she held her breath. The size of it shocked her every time.

She hoped she would never get used to it, never get used to how it slowly slid inside her. How he slid just the head inside her and waited a moment to let her stretch, relax, and pushed in again, with soft, rocking movements of his hips.

She wanted to move with him, but she couldn’t, held down as she was. So she threw her head back and let herself be taken, offered him everything he wanted and more.

“I’m yours,” she whispered again as he slid deeper into her. She was so wet that he didn’t need to be so careful. She wanted to thrust up against him, take him inside her and ride him until she had taken as much as she gave.

“Leigh!” he gasped as he pulled back, almost all the way out before thrusting into her again. This time, he wasn’t so slow, so gentle. This time, he drove into her, hard and fast. She cried out in pleasure as he moved, in and out of her, the pleasure so intense that she could hardly breathe through it.

  “Harrison…”

“Touch yourself. I want to see you touch yourself, Leigh.”

He said the words through gritted teeth and she knew that he would not take his pleasure until she had had hers. Her hand was between her legs, where they were joined, where he slid in and out of her. She stroked his shaft as he moved, and she stroked herself, pressing and flicking, her fingers playing over him, too.

“Leigh, I can’t… Come for me, baby.”

She opened her mouth, about to say his name, but his mouth was on hers, swallowing the scream as her body started shuddering from the pleasure of having him inside her. Her inner walls clenched and squeezed at him, willing him to join her in that pleasure as she held on to him. She sobbed against his mouth, holding on to him so tightly, as he stayed still, filling her, holding so steady until her tremors started fading.

  “I can’t.”

This time, he didn’t. He drove into her, again and again, kissed her like a man possessed, as if he would possess her until the end of time as he branded her as his.

  His wife.

She was his. She belonged to him.

  “I’m…”

“I love you,” she whispered as she held him close, willing him to take whatever he needed, desperate to have him join her in that mindless tumble of sheer pleasure. She felt his body tense and still held on, as he filled her, and gave as much as he took.

  He was hers, too.

  They belonged.

  Chapter 3

“Did it live up to expectations?”

Leigh turned to Harrison and raised an enquiring eyebrow. They were flying back home.

Home – she savored the word. Going home with Harrison, her husband.

It was going to take some getting used to.

“I don’t know, let me check with Anna and Jonathan,” said Leigh, softening the chastisement in the words with a teasing tone.

  Harrison grinned.

“I guess I spent some time working.”

“I guess you did. But it’s all right, I knew what I was getting into when I agreed to marry you. And yes, it did. You know me, I enjoy my solitude, too. That island is gorgeous. Is it really ours?”

“Yours, Leigh. But I appreciate how you graciously agreed to share it with me.”

Chuckling, Leigh settled back in the private plane and sighed a little.

“You could get used to all of this, really. Well, I’ll have my feet firmly on the ground when I’m back and working.”

“You got a couple of calls from Roger, too.

“Because he’s a dunce. I left him very clear instructions on where all the research I’d done for him was stored, and how I’d organized and cross-referenced it.”

  “Then why did he call?”

“He couldn’t find the document in which I explained all of it, and he wasn’t listening when I actually told him about it.”

They landed just as Harrison laughed again, and Leigh thought that she could get used to a lifetime of making Harrison laugh like that. But the moment they were out, his face changed. It was time for business, thought Leigh, with some regret.

Well, it was time for her to get down to business, too. It was seven in the morning. She knew that Harrison had declared that they needed to leave so early because he wanted to get a head start on work. She also knew that he was worried about something. She didn’t know what had put those lines between her eyebrows, but they’d been there more often than not during their honeymoon.

A lesser woman, thought Leigh, would’ve been disgruntled about it.

She’d thought that it would take time to get used to being back home after the kind of luxury she was afraid she’d gotten used to at the island. But as it turned out, there wasn’t much time for it. They’d just gotten home when the call came in.

“Leigh, good, you’re back. We’re getting swamped. I need to be out of here by nine, so can you be here by 8.30?”

Leigh, just out of the shower and wrapped in a towel – Harrison was gone, already, and she wasn’t surprised – felt that familiar thrill. She used to feel it, almost a lifetime ago, when she found a precedent that she knew could make a case swing their way. She had done that a lot as a paralegal. But this…

“I’ll be there in twenty,” she said, and cut the call.

Finding an outfit was easy, thanks to Harrison. Everything in Harrison’s space was organized perfectly. Now that she was in Harrison’s space, she too would be organized. Leigh was only mildly disgruntled at that. She was organized, too.

Still, she thought as she opened the wardrobe, she’d never had her clothes sorted out into formals, work formals, work casuals and casuals, with entire outfits put together for each section for days when she didn’t have time to coordinate them on the go. Her closet – Harrison had done some work in the penthouse to make sure she had plenty of space, and the closet was about the size of her bedroom at her old apartment.

Well, she’d take advantage of it today. She wouldn’t just be assisting that day, which meant that she’d probably be doing more than paperwork, so she picked a wine red outfit that suited her dark skin and sleek, dark hair perfectly. It made her hazel eyes glow like gold.

It wasn’t bright enough to stand out too much, but it was red enough to make sure that she wouldn’t be ignored. A woman, thought Leigh, had to use what she had to make sure she was heard. She was going to be heard.

Driving to work in another of Harrison’s gifts was, she had to admit, another pleasure. Maybe she’d have to speak with him about this gift business, he couldn’t just give her everything, she did want to keep her independence as a working woman, too. It was low key, as she needed it to be, but it was a dream to drive. If she knew more about cars, she’d probably find that he had bought her a car with the best safety rating.

There were nerves as she found a parking spot – not the easiest thing, but she managed – and walked up four flights of stairs, ignoring the lift, and turned into the corridor off which was their office.

She was kind-of sort-of a partner, because Roger Hutton treated her, junior and inexperienced as she was, as a partner. Of course, the fact that it was just the two of them meant that they had to be partners.

Leigh had only been working for about two months, and she hadn’t taken on any cases on her own. She had been assisting Roger. Now, she knew, it was time for her to do it on her own.

“Leigh, stop admiring my name on the door and come in,” called Roger, and Leigh had to grin.

  Of course he knew.

Roger and she were friends – very good friends. At one time, Roger had hoped that they could be more, but since they were both very happy with how things had turned out, Roger had had to admit that it had probably all been for the best, anyway.

“Here’s what you’ve got,” said Roger, without preamble, and launched into an explanation of what needed to be done. He was obviously harried, and Leigh had to suppress a sigh at the books that were piled up all over the place. Where Roger went, so did stacks and stacks of books.

She was pleasantly surprised when the phone rang, giving her an excuse to grab it and hold up a hand, interrupting Roger’s monologue. They were currently out of an office administrator, which made her think longingly of Harrison’s Anna.

  “Yes, this is Hutton Legal.”

“I need to speak with Leigh Wells.”

  Leigh frowned.

  “This is Leigh Wells.”

“This is my one phone call. I was told I’d be assigned a lawyer, but I want it to be you.”

  Now Leigh was completely flummoxed.

“That isn’t how getting assigned a public defender works. Who are you?”

“My name is Darius Bomer. I want you to represent me. I can pay a bit. Please…”

Leigh looked up at Roger, who had picked up the extension and was listening in. Putting a call on speaker changed how it sounded, and put people already on edge on the defensive. Roger had decided to get extension instead.

“Tell me which precinct you’re at and what you’re charged with. I’ll be on my way immediately.”

Darius Bomer rattled off the address quickly. Leigh knew how to get there, of course. It was her city. She could be there in twenty minutes.

“I’m charged with online identity theft and credit card fraud.”

Leigh’s eyes narrowed. She had an inkling why he had called her. Lucky for him, she had decided to specialize in cybercrimes.

“I’ll be there in twenty. Sit tight, don’t say a word. You have nothing to say except that you’re waiting for your lawyer.”

“I know that much,” said her new client, and hung up on her.

“We have a new client,” stated Roger as she put the phone back in its cradle.

  “We do,” agreed Leigh.

“Doesn’t sound like he can pay enough to cover any of our bills. Unless he actually is into identity theft, in which case he could probably buy and sell us twice over.”

  Leigh grinned.

“Wouldn’t that make things more interesting? See you in a bit, Roger.”

Leigh grabbed the bag she had just put down and made her way out. She made it to the precinct in less than the twenty minutes she’d promised.

Defense attorneys always got the stink eye at cop shops. Leigh figured she’d get used to it sooner rather than later. She wasn’t known for being thin-skinned.

“I’m Darius Bomer’s lawyer. I’d like to confer with my client. In private, please.”

She didn’t smile. There was no point smiling. She was already the enemy. The lieutenant in charge glanced at her, and she figured she’d get used to the sneer that he threw her way, too.

“Yes, of course. Wouldn’t want your husband to file a lawsuit against us, Mrs. Bloom.”

Oh, that set her teeth on edge.

“I’m the lawyer, lieutenant. And that’s Ms. Wells to you, if you don’t mind. My client?”

“O’Donnell, take Mrs. Bloom to the perp in questioning.”

The look he threw at the officer made Leigh reassess very quickly. It wasn’t just her – the lieutenant had a problem with either women, or race, or black women in particular. There was a flash of quickly masked contempt in O’Donnell’s eyes before she turned to Leigh. There was no friendliness as she nodded at Leigh, but there was no overt hostility, either.

“This way, Ms. Wells. You’re new here,” said O’Donnell as she walked Leigh towards the holding room where Darius Bomer was obviously being held, “so I’ll give you a word of friendly warning. Don’t antagoni
ze the Lt. He’s known for being efficient, not for his warmth or bleeding heart.”

“I know. I did my homework, Officer. I know the Lt’s record. I will soon know yours. And for the record, I’d like to tell you, from me, that I believe in the law as much as you do. I also believe in justice being tempered with mercy.”

To Leigh’s surprise, the officer laughed.

“Well, well. My name is Portia O’Donnell. Fancy you choosing to go with Merchant of Venice. Darius is in there. You have fifteen minutes.”

Portia O’Donnell hesitated for a moment, taking in Leigh, apparently taking stock.

“I’ll see you around,” she decided, and opened the door.

Leigh walked in, pulling confidence around herself like a cloak. She wasn’t sure if she could handle it all. But she had to, so she would.

She focused on Darius Bomer instead. Black kid, looked about twenty, dreadlocks, not very tall, far too skinny, thick glasses, looked like he needed to eat more greens. He sat still, but there was an air of nervous energy around him. Leigh glanced at the file she’d been handed – very thin – and saw that he had no record.

“All right, Darius, I’m Leigh Wells. You asked for me.”

Darius looked up and sized Leigh up. The kid was far too grown up, thought Leigh with a pang of sympathy.

  “Is this conversation confidential?”

“It’s supposed to be, but make no assumptions. You’re accused of identity theft and credit card fraud. The first is a little harsh, the second… Well, looks like somebody ratted you out.”

The flash of anger came and went, controlled very quickly. The kid was definitely too grown up.

“I won’t rat anybody out. I’m not taking a plea deal. I’ll fight it out. I don’t have much money, but I can pay you. I can pay you back in work, too. I’m good with computers.”

  “You got caught.”

“I didn’t do it. At least… That bastard who ratted me out, he…”

  Leigh pursed her lips.

“I’m sure they read you your rights. You’re not a minor, so your guardians didn’t need to be notified. If I can find a procedural loophole, I’ll get you out by the end of the day on that. Otherwise, I’ll have to get you produced in court quickly, get bail figured out, and then see where it goes.”
