  “Everything,” Dan said with pride. He was also tired, but excited to share his findings. He picked the phone up and pressed a few buttons, then replaced it on the table.

  A recording started. At first, there were distant sounds of cars passing by, and heavy breathing. Then, they heard Dan ring Johnson’s doorbell. After a brief exchange, Johnson invited him to the upstairs office, where Dan explained that Adele was in a great deal of stress, and that they really needed Johnson’s treatment.

  “Oh, wow,” Megan said, when Dan voiced the price. “He’s not holding back at all.”

  “Greed,” Dan explained.

  In the end, his initial read on the guy had been correct. Johnson couldn’t walk away from this much money.

  On the recording, Dan began getting angry. It was like listening to an audiobook, all that was missing was a dramatic background melody. Dan got progressively frustrated, accusing Johnson of being dishonest. At the same time, Dan sounded hurt, as if Johnson’s actions deeply offended him. Adele supposed that part was sincere.

  After a long pause and muffled shuffling, they clearly heard Johnson say: “Listen to me, Daniel. I am sorry, but I can’t help you. Yes, the program is aimed at helping you get pregnant, but there’s no proof that it works. To once and for all end this debate, I’ll say that it doesn’t. It won’t help Adele.”

  Dan’s fist delivered a hook through the air. “Bam! The motherfucker goes down!”

  Neil nodded, his lips wide.

  “Very well done,” Meg said, shaking Adele’s hand. “Dan, you can pick up your check tomorrow. Adi, good job.”

  The recording continued for a minute longer, during which time Johnson apologized a lot. To Dan’s credit, he did not break character or rub it into Johnson’s face, which would’ve most certainly resulted in him fleeing the state. Dan simply accepted his explanation and left hastily.

  Neil got up then and shook Dan’s hand. After a pause, Meg said she was going home and left the office.

  “I’ll be downstairs,” Dan told Adele. Both she and Neil nodded.

  The first thing Adele did was giving Neil a hug. She held him for a long moment, and he held her back.

  “What was that for?” he asked. There was no hurt in his voice as he said it.

  “You’re a good man, Neil. Thank you. For everything.”

  “Hey, hey, it’s alright, Adi.”

  She realized she was crying quietly, a single tear having rolled down her cheek. Neil wiped it off with a thumb.

  “These better be tears of happiness,” he said with a kind smile.

  They were. It was a blessing, having two men that cared for her so much, yet weren’t competitive about it. Neil was her boss, but he was also a friend – just a friend, from now on. She gave him a kiss on the cheek.

  “I better go.”

  “Yeah, I understand. Go, then.”

  She left his office and met down Dan down in the parking lot. He was parked near the elevator, and she climbed right in. They left the office, driving slowly through busy Manhattan streets.

  “Where to?” Dan asked.

  “To my place. I want you in my bed. Now.” She’d been dying to tell him that since their time at the cottage, and the confession aroused her. There was that electricity in the air again. She wanted him to step on the gas, to take them straight to her bedroom. He stopped in front of the building, and they went up, hand in hand.

  “There nothing for dinner, sorry about that,” she said when they entered, immediately realizing what she’d set up.

  “Oh, there is something to eat though, Adi!”

  Dan picked her up and kissed her lips. They danced in to her bedroom, getting rid of their clothes on the way. That night, they took a shower together, then made love twice, before finally collapsing next to each other, sweaty and satisfied.

  “I love you so much,” Dan said.

  “You love the sex,” she joked.

  “I love the sex with you, which means I love you.”

  She kissed him. She loved him back. And the sex, naturally. Adele had never been into pillow talk, but it seemed fitting this time.

  “You know what’s funny?” she said. “Now that we’ve left Bolton, I kind of want to go back. I miss the lake, and the quite lane we lived on. I’m gonna miss it.”

  “We can always go back! Johnson will be in jail for a good while, so we’ll be free to hang around all the time.”

  “You’re right.”

  “I don’t think we should though. It was a special experience, I think. Something we won’t be able to recapture. But there are many lakes in the Adirondack area. We can rent another house.”

  “I want to own one. I want our own house by the lake…”

  She went on, sharing her dreams with him, and Dan agreed with her on every account. They were getting closer by the minute. She remembered something that had slipped her mind back at the office.

  “Do we really have a week of vacation left?” she asked.

  “Don’t know about you, but I’m getting paid for three week’s work.”

  (Later, it turned out Adele wasn’t free, but she did receive a huge bonus for her work on the case, and that would be enough to fund a proper vacation when they decided to take it.)

  Red Johnson did go to jail. He was sentenced to 170 years in prison – ten years for every account of fraud – and had to return over three million dollars, fines included. His victims weren’t exactly satisfied, but Adele guessed they wouldn’t be in any case, after what they’d gone through. The firm did receive a fat paycheck at the end of it, however, which made Meg very happy.

  Adele carried on working at Curry Radcliffe. She went the line of least resistance, and made senior associate only the following year. That was fine, since there was a whole other part of her life that she’d grown to care about a lot more. She’d moved in together with Dan. His condo was twice as big as her Manhattan apartment. They’d adopted a cat. Family life was finally taking shape, and they both loved it.

  To celebrate their one-year anniversary, Dan rented a house on the other side of Lake George. They spent a week there, swimming and having barbeques and, of course, having sex all the time. It was perfect, and more than Adele had ever hoped for.

  One night, when they were sitting outside drinking wine, Dan said, “Do you want to have kids?”

  The question caught her off guard, and she wasn’t sure what reply would be the safest. In the end, she decided honesty was the best policy. She said, “Not yet.”

  “But some time in the future?” he asked. She could tell he wanted kids, likely a boy, whom he could pass on his love for cars to. And his looks. And his character.

  She could see Dan playing with their boy, teaching him to ride a bike…

  She said, “Some day, sure. I’d like to work while I can. Meg’s treating me well, and Neil promised to make me partner before long. I’d like that.”

  “I’m proud of you,” he said. “You should do that.”

  He got up and went inside, and Adele got worked up. Had she said something wrong? Was Dan not happy? She would feel terrible if that was the case. If because of her ambitions Dan wasn’t happy with their life.

  He returned before long and sat back down. He had two glasses of red, just like on their first night in Bolton, which they counted as ground zero. He passed her a glass.

  He said, “You’re right. We should give it some more time. There’re a few things I want to do first, too.”

  “Such as?”

  “I thought maybe I could start that home security company, after all.”

  That caused her to laugh. “You know nothing about home security!”

  “I’ll read up on it! And you’ll buy me some colored polo shirts and khakis.” He shivered. “Bad idea.”

  “But really? What?”

  “Well, my own agency would be nice to have. I have what it takes to recruit some guys, train them in the art.”

  “Look at you becoming a master!”

/>   He kissed her and they laughed together, and then dreamed some more.

  In the end of the night, when sun had completely disappeared beyond the mountains, Dan said, “To be honest, there’s only one thing I’d like to do next. For us to do next.”

  Adele held her breath.

  Dan set his glass aside, turned to her and got down on one knee. “Adele Marianne Simpson, will you marry me?”
