The Captain and the Broken Girl (New Hampshire Bears Book 6)

Before anyone could answer, the side door opens and out comes Oliver, Dacey, several other players, with their wives or girlfriends. I tense up because I’m not sure if Oliver knows about us. The other day at his office when Janan came over she barely made eye contact with me. It could have been because she had her mind on track thinking about the fundraiser for the shelter, but I can’t be sure. Nonetheless, I don’t let go of her.
Then Oliver’s eyes cut through me.
“Baer, Elgin, walk with me.” He orders and I immediately let go of Janan as if I’m a twelve year old as does Teo.
“Sure,” we say in unison.
Oliver is around six feet tall but still scares the shit out of me. I know Teo feels the same way. The man is a saint to Janan and Nova since they’re his goddaughters, but in truth he’s a ruthless businessman and has the reputation of a pit bull. He grips the back of my neck and digs his nails into my skin and does the same to Teo.
“Right now, you’re not players of the Bears, and I’m not the owner of the team you play for, which is worth a billion dollars. Right now, I’m a godfather, who is speaking to the boys dating my goddaughters.” He squeezes my neck a bit more as we approach his waiting driver and town car. “This is your one and only warning, hurt either of them and you will not like where I bury your bodies.” He adjusts his tie as the driver opens the car door. “Do we understand?” He looks at me first, and I nod, and then Teo, who nods as well. “Have a good evening.” He easily slides into the car and the driver scurries to the driver’s side and takes off.
“Every bone in my body says he’s totally making a promise,” Teo speaks.
“I have no doubt in my mind.” I rub my neck and head back to Janan and my brother.
Everyone has decided to go to the steakhouse, except Teo and Nova, they’re heading somewhere else. I’m sure by Nova’s red cheeks they were going back to the apartment. We all pile into our cars and trucks and head over. Janan sits close to me since Henry is in the truck and Nova took the car. Teo usually rides over with Nathan.
The steakhouse was great. Great food. Great company. Henry and Janan seem to be getting along splendidly, even joking with each other. I’ve been on a lot of different teams through my career but I have been with the Bears for almost five seasons. The longest of all of them. With all the bouncing around and keeping to myself, this—this moment—is the first time I feel as if I belong to the team. I know I’m the captain. Yes, I know the ins and outs of their lives, but it doesn’t mean I fit it. I’m supposed to be a leader, not a friend.
Until now…
“I can pay for my own meal, you know?” Janan leans in close to my ear.
“We can take it out in trade.” I wink.
“I guess.” She jokingly sighs.
I sign my name to the receipt and with Henry next to me on my right and Janan on my left, we all walk out. I take Janan home because she has class and needs to work tomorrow. Although I desperately want her in my bed with me. I walk her to the apartment door and wait for her to open it. We step in together but neither of us see Teo or Nova... until…
“Yes.” The loud moan came from the direction of the bedroom and it sounds like Nova.
I groan and Janan laughs softly.
“I guess they’re getting along just fine.”
“You sure you don’t want to come home with me?” I pull her close. “I’m certain we can make our own noises.” I raise one eyebrow at her.
“Oh I know we can, but I’m going to my bed. Alone. Then I’m going to put on my noise canceling headphones and sleep.” She kisses me fully on the lips. “I’ll see you after tomorrow night’s game.”
“Okay. Text me.” I give her another swift kiss as Teo yells out, “Fuck.”
Janan giggles. “Hurry and leave because I need to get these noises out of my head.” She shoves me toward the door.
“I love you.”
“Love you.” She smiles and shuts the door.
HENRY AND I hang out just talking and having a beer together when we get back to my place. I know we hung out several times this summer, but it seems like forever ago. He seems happy and even tells me about another doctor he’s sort of seeing. I’m happy for him. Only one of us should be working all the time and it should be me. Although, Janan is on my mind much more than hockey.
Another new strange feeling I need to get used to.
I’m laying in my bed and I think about the night in the hotel with Janan. It’s a lifetime ago, but every detail is burned happily into my memory. Her touch on my skin and cock. Damn, I’m growing hard as the memories become more prevalent. I grab my shaft hard and pump up and down. The swirl of her tongue on my tip makes me groan.
“Fuck.” I cum all over my hand. I lay my head back on the headboard and take a deep breath.
“I miss Janan.”
PRACTICE ENDS AND Teo’s still smiling. Sadly, I know why. Then again, if he’s happy then I’m glad for it. But I know this team and they’ll…
“Hey, Teo, what’s with all the grinning?” Alden, of course, is the first to say something.
I turn my back to them and remove my pads. I’m not sure if Teo will give details or not.
“I’m in a good mood. No big deal,” Teo states and shrugs his shoulders.
“Oh are you?” Alden heads over to him. “Could this grinning syndrome you suddenly have have anything to do with a certain Coach’s niece?”
“Go away.” Teo shoves on Alden’s shoulder. “I’m not saying anything.”
“I knew it,” Alden yells. “Teo got himself some pussy!”
The room booms with laughter, minus me, and then suddenly it’s dead silence. I turn to see Coach Long walking in with his arms crossed.
“No.” He glares at Alden, turns, and walks out.
“Okay, boys no talking about Teo’s or Hamilton’s love life,” Cabel states and we all go back to changing.
Right before we begin to leave, Oliver comes in and tells us about Janan’s fundraiser. He’s making it a mandatory event for us to attend. He says we don’t have to donate, but we have to purchase the standard plate fee of fifteen hundred dollars. I’m surprised when he said it was going to be in less than two weeks.
Who can put a fundraiser together that fast?
Oliver can.
Once he’s done talking, I rush out the door and head home to meet up with Henry. He’s leaving on a later flight so we can grab some lunch. After we finish I’ll take him to the airport.
Henry is waiting for me with his bag. “I’m starving.”
I chuckle. “Let’s go, bro.”
He grins, grabs his bag and jumps into the truck. “What are you feeding me?”
After several suggestions we end up at a deli not too far from the arena. It’s not strange to us when we both order ham and swiss cheese sandwiches with salt and vinegar chips. Not to mention, the pickle wedge.
Henry talks about getting back to work. He’s only been gone for about twenty-four hours, but by the way he’s telling it, it’s been three months. However, the more he talks about the female doctor Mindy the more it becomes clear it’s not work he’s missing.
As I finish my food, Henry moves the conversation to Janan. “I like her. She challenges you.”
“How so?” I furrow my brow.
“She sees through your shit. Plus, and this is a big one, she isn’t with you just because you’re Hamilton Baer the Captain. She’s with you because you’re Hamilton Baer, the overbearing gentlemen.” He jokes.
“Ha! Ha!” I fake laugh.
“Seriously, she’s cool. I like you two together.”
“Thanks, bro. I hate you’re going back so soon.”
Henry’s face falls slightly. “I’ll be back soon. Besides this will give you some alone time with Janan.”
“Yes. I want to do something super romantic, but I can’t seem to figure out what to do.”
“What do you mean?” Henry sips from his bottle of water.
“She’s
... well... she’s a virgin and I feel as if we’re getting closer to reaching a higher level in our relationship. I don’t want to be some ass and just bang her after a dinner at Taco Bell or some shit. I need to figure out a way to make it as memorable as possible.” I sigh.
“You must have something in mind.”
I shake my head. “I thought dinner and a movie, but it doesn’t seem to be—enough.” I run my hands through my hair and tug a bit. “It shouldn’t be this frustrating.”
“What did you do before? With all the other girls you were with?”
I hate saying it, but I do. “I didn’t do anything. It was sex. It’s never been with someone I love.”
“You’ll figure it out.” He’s silent for a moment. “I have to go soon, Hamilton, but let me just say you’re the best brother ever.”
“You’re pretty awesome too.”
I DIDN’T GET to really talk to Janan before the game tonight. A few text messages are all I got out of her. She had class and worked at the shelter after. However, I knew she would be at the game. She’s a big hockey fan. Although, she plays it off at times as not being one.
The game is moving smoothly. Nathan is killing it in the net tonight. Nothing can get past him, and I’m starting to think he’s a brick wall. Finally, Vance scores. Then a few moments later, Bas does. Close to the end of the third period, Remington puts the puck in the back of the net, and we win!
With a lot of smiles and high fives, we head down to the tunnel. I’m excited to shower and change. We have practice tomorrow but no game. We don’t travel until the next day. I have an outstanding night planned for Janan and me.
I want it to be perfect.
I had set up most of it already. I just need to grab Janan and some food because I’m starving. I rush out the side door toward the player’s parking lot. Most of the wives, girlfriends, and families are all standing around laughing. I caught Nova’s eyes, and she seems to be glowing with happiness.
I shake my head. “You’re smiling as much as Teo.” I give her a quick hug.
“Janan told me you heard us.” Nova’s face turns a deep shade of red. “We weren’t having sex.”
“Let’s forget all about it.” I wave my hand as if it means nothing.
Arms come tight around my waist. “Great game, Hammy.” Janan’s voice is a little muffled from my suit jacket.
“Thank you, sweetheart.” I grasp her hands tight.
“I’m hungry. Let’s blow this place and get some bad carbohydrates and gooey cheese.” She comes around and her eyes shine bright.
“I’m game.” I kiss her forehead. “Bye, Novabear,” I say as I guide Janan toward my truck.
Janan suggests we grab some burgers from Five Guys because it’s quick and delicious. I couldn’t agree with her more. After we get our food, I drive us back to my place.
Before we eat I remove my jacket and roll up my sleeves. We eat at the breakfast bar. I think it’s where I always eat. I know the huge dining room is never used. It’s used for show more than anything. I love my big house and love Janan being in it more.
“How was your day?” I ask taking a bite of my cheeseburger.
“Good. Classes are going well. The kids at the shelter don’t seem to be falling behind anymore.”
“That’s great to hear.” Something seems off though. “Anything else?” I ask cautiously.
“Alex found me on campus.”
I’m beginning not to like this guy.
“You okay?”
“Oh yeah.” She waves off the question.
“No, oh yeah. Answer me. Did he hurt you or anything?”
She narrows her eyes at me. “Do I look like some damsel in distress looking for a knight in shining armor?”
“Janan.”
“No.” She puts her food down and turns fully to me. “I’m not some little girl anymore. I can handle anything and everything that comes my way now. Don’t act like I can’t handle situations.”
“Stop.” I grab her arms. “Stop,” I say again. “I am certain you can handle yourself. I’ve never thought of you as a damsel in distress. All I meant is are you okay and what happened. Nothing else.” I try my best to keep my voice even and calm.
I am well aware of all the trauma Janan has been put through in her life by the hands of her mother. I know she’s been taking self-defense classes with Macy and Nova. I have learned how capable Janan is in handling herself.
She quickly apologizes. “I just don’t want everyone to think I’m weak.”
I cup her face. “No one thinks you’re weak. You’re the strongest person I know and it’s one of the qualities I love about you.” I kiss her fully on the lips. “Now, may I ask, without you jumping down my throat, what happened with Alex?” I release her face and sit back.
She sighs, picks up her burger and takes a bite. She chews slowly, before she finally says, “He asked me out. I explained to him I was dating someone and wasn’t interested in him. He was a little upset by my words, but I just walked away from him. Simple, easy, and over,” she states.
Rage is pulsing through me. He asked her out? He asked her out. Why? This little shit doesn’t seem to understand the definition of the word no. I have a feeling this isn’t the last I’m going to hear about this asshole. But I can’t let this ruin my night.
Our night!
“If he bothers you again, please let me know,” I ask nicely even though I’m ready to break this punk’s nose.
She rolls her eyes, sighs loudly, but says nothing and continues eating. I follow suit and once I finish I have to figure out a way to turn this evening around. She picks up our wrappers and garbage.
“Hamilton.” She comes back around the breakfast bar. I twist around and pull her in between my knees, squeezing her hips. “I love you and I’m thankful for all your kindness you give Daddy and Nova. You opened your home to us time and time again, and I don’t know how I’ll ever repay you. But if we’re going to be in this relationship, I mean one hundred percent in it, then you have to trust me I can handle my battles. I don’t need you to rescue me.”
I kiss her forehead and hold her tighter. “You have to understand something as well. I love you and your independence. However, because you’re such an important person in my life, I want to protect you. It doesn’t mean you can’t handle yourself, I know you can. It’s in my nature to protect.”
Janan giggles. “It’s because you’re a big strong captain.” She flirts with me.
The chuckle comes deep from my throat. “I’m only strong now because you’re by my side.”
“Wow. You’re laying it on thick there, Mr. Baer.” She wraps her arms around my neck.
“Just telling you the truth.” I lean close to her lips and lick the seam, bringing a soft gasp from her. “Do you remember our night together?”
“I do.” Her eyes flutter closed and her mouth still stays open.
“Remember my tongue between your legs.” I stick my tongue deep in her mouth and trace the roof before biting—somewhat gently—on her bottom lip. “I really want to take you upstairs.”
Well, that blows all the other ideas I had planned.
“Okay.” She steps out of my hold, grips my hand tight, and leads us upstairs. When she opens the door she stops.
“Oh right.” I forgot about the rose petals and flameless candles I had already laid out and turned on.
“I see you already had something in mind.” She turns and smirks up at me.
“I may have.” I wink at her.
She tugs on my arm and pulls me further into the bedroom. “Let’s see if we can break the bed.”
“Janan, we have to go slow your first time,” I tell her as she continues leading me to the bed.
“Says who? You know how I like it, and I know how you like it.” She begins to pull off my tie.
“Stop.” I grab her wrists. “You know what I mean. Yes, I like it a little rougher and you were very clear with me on what you like.”
When we were in the hotel, she went into detail on how she wanted me to fuck her hard and spank her. She knows how bad I want to do those things to her as well. I’m not into a lot of kinky things but fucking Janan hard and spanking her ass is something I want to do so badly. It makes me harder than I already am. But not her first time. I can’t be that way with her the first time.
“Please don’t say you’re going to be all soft with me, Hamilton. You and I both need this.” She twists out of my grasp and begins to unbutton my dress shirt. “I know you think I’m a delicate flower and you want to pluck me gently, but right now I need my Hamilton. I want the Hamilton who bites my neck while finger banging me. I want the man who will make my first time memorable and not something that’ll put me to sleep. I want you.” She untucked my shirt and pushes it off my shoulder.
“Janan.” All my inhibitions are leaving me. I know the right thing to do is to think about her and her needs. I have to be soft with her, but my head is fuzzy as she drags her nails down my chest and abs to my belt.
“If you want me to stop and have sweet Hallmark and Lifetime channel sex, I won’t contest.” She takes two steps back.
I take a deep breath and move closer to her. “How about we compromise?”
“Wow, we’re negotiating our sex acts? We’re so mature.” She teases. “It’s really romantic.”
I laugh wrapping my arms around her. “How about we just take it slow and see where it goes? Okay?”
I kiss the tip of her nose. Then her right cheek. Then her left cheek. Then her lips. I push my tongue into her soft mouth, and she moans. Digging her fingers through my hair, she tugs at the bottom. Our lips break for a second as I remove her shirt. She’s not wearing any fancy lingerie. Just a simple satin white bra. It’s sexy as sin. I’m ready to yank it off her and bury my face in between her breasts, tasting her sweet skin.
“Turn around.” She does.
I unhook her bra and let it fall away from her body. I graze my fingertips down her back. I drop to my knees as I reach around and pop the button of her jeans. I jerk her tight jeans, along with her satin underwear down her legs and she kicks them away. I bite her right ass cheek and then the left.
