  Chapter 1

Anna sensed his presence before he was against her; his hot breath nearing her neck. How could she not? He used to be her entire world. His almond and cedar cologne filled her nostrils.

"You look incredible," he said and licked his lips, barely inches away.

She pictured his thick, muscular body and steeled herself before turning around. She refused to let him in. Even if he was the most handsome thing she’d ever seen. He still made her heart beat fast, though it was painful remembering what they what they used to be. Her fox-like senses were acute, and his scent drew out her primal urges. Keeping her wits about her would be a challenge. "What are you doing here?"

"I've missed you," he growled lowly in her ear, sending shivers down her back. His large, masculine hand came to rest on the small of her back. She lingered on his hands, the very hands that used to caress her body and turn her into a weak-kneed lover, wobbling from exhaustion.

Anna grounded herself before she fell into his magnetic spell. She rarely thought of anyone else since their break-up, but she forced herself to move on. She had to. It was the only way to heal. "Have you now?" She forced her libido back into a tightly controlled space. "How could you possibly miss me?” Anna snapped at him. “You’re the one who chose to walk away and betray me. We're through," she rattled on. Stay strong. Don’t let him see he still makes you weak in the knees.

"Let me make it up to you.” His strong body was pressed dangerously close. “I know all of your secret little spots,” he teased. “Let me remind you of how you used to claw and cry out with pleasure." Matt Stryker drew a lone finger across her collarbone and whispered in her ear, causing the tiny hairs on her neck to stand. "Let me back into your world, Anna. You know there's nobody that can make you feel the way that I can."

Anna bit her cheek, trying to reel back the emotions flooding through her. She hated that her body responded, even when her mind was saying no. She squeezed her thighs together. When he was in human form, it was easier to control the urges, but when he tore into his bear form, when he got raw and powerful, she knew she didn't stand a chance. Their animal attraction was strong; though bears and foxes aren’t usually drawn to one another. Their love was unlike any other... until he walked away. It left her shattered and picking up the pieces of her heart. It tasted of pungent anger and pain.

She gave him the better part of two years. He gave her a line about bears not mating for life and moved on. He'd always had an eye for their resident newscaster, Bunny St. James… the bitchy bunny on the block. He wanted to tame her, take control, but he found out the rabbit wasn't as much fun as he'd hoped for. He grew restless and bored, and by the time he came to his senses, Anna had moved on.

Tom “Hawk” Devlin flew into the tavern and landed on her shoulder.

"Hey babe," she said, a smirk forming on her lips. Matt deserved this. He broke her heart.

With a snap of his jaws, Matt's snout started to turn. A roar grew up from his belly and blew out of him shaking the room. Hawk wasn't worthy of Anna's love. "Why is this flying chicken sitting on your shoulder," he snarled. The thought of another man touching her sent him into an internal, twisted rage. She was his. Or she would be again. He’d made damn sure of it…whatever it took.

Hawk shifted to his human form and stood chest to chest with Matt. "She’s moved on, Matt. She's taken. You walked away, remember? Somebody had to pick up the broken pieces of her heart."

"If you think Anna won't come back to me, you're sadly mistaken," his arrogance speaking for him. "She needs me, as much as I need her. We're meant to be together.”

"I thought bears didn't mate for life," Hawk shot back, daring Matt to discount his words.

"This bear does." He snapped at Hawk, inches from his face. “You better watch it, buddy. Or I’ll be having chicken for dinner.” He turned to leave the bar.

Hawk was there when Anna fell apart. He’d always been there. He stood by her and watched her crumble. She was one of his best friends, and after years of simple friendship, they found themselves entwined and tangled together in heated lust one night. The rest they sort of let happen, but her heart wasn’t in it. He knew he was a fill-in, but hoped she’d eventually love him the way he loved her. Hawk wasn’t stupid. He saw it in Anna’s eyes when Matt walked away. She played tough, but there was no hiding her longing and desire. It stung knowing he wasn’t ever going to fill that space, but he’d damn sure try.

Anna turned back to the television in the corner of the bar. The bitch, Bunny St. James, was on the screen. Her stomach knotted on seeing the newscaster. She was a thorn wedged tightly into her memory. Fuck, Bunny St. James. If she hadn’t intervened and if he hadn’t picked up on her scent of desperation…if he hadn’t strayed and betrayed her…she turned to Hawk, trying to shake the memory. “How was your day?”

“How’s your heart? That’s the real question.” The tone in his voice game him away. He watched her face. There was no denying the answer.

Anna swallowed and looked down. She wasn’t a good liar. “I’m fine,” she said not meaning it. Would it ever get easier?

“Right.” There was a long exaggerated pause. “I should go.” He knew his place. He’d never be what she truly needed, no matter how much she tried to convince herself. What he wanted and what she needed were two very different things.

“Hawk, wait…” Anna stopped. What was the point? He knew. She knew. They all knew. Matt was the one she ached for. That would never change.

With the red moon coming, all bets were off. Primal urges ran high, and it was hard to escape your truth. A red moon could make or break your relationship. It could also destroy two years of trust with one simple betrayal. Anna closed her eyes. Every fiber of her being ached for how things used to be… but there was no going back. A year may have passed, but it didn’t make it any easier.

Matt begged her forgiveness over and over, but Anna would have none of it. She’d never trust his four-legged bear ass again. She craved his touch, his heated breath on her body, but it didn’t matter what she wanted. She didn’t trust him. It was as simple as that. It would always be there, taunting her, wondering if he’d stray again. There was no way she could live like that.

He claimed it was a misunderstanding, but she wasn’t a fool. He played her and Bunny against one another, in a twisted charade. When the red moon came, there’d be no denying where he’d end up. And Anna knew it wasn’t her doorstep he’d be on. His urges were too strong. His bear decided what he wanted on the red moon, not his human. His human always wanted Anna…heart and soul, but his bear…his bear went after primal seduction, and he lacked control. There was guilt and sorrow and apologies, but there was no more Anna and Matt. She saw to that the moment he betrayed her.

  Chapter 2

Mountain View Crest was home to the shifters. The history was bleak, but they came to live in segregation as most of the pure humans feared them. Some shifters had better control of their wild streak than others. Her parents told her about earlier days, but she didn’t remember any of it. She was too young when they were forced up to
Mountain View Crest, fenced off with the rest of the known shifters. Not admitting you were a shifter and being found out later held harsher penalties than voluntarily making the move. There was sadness in her mother’s eyes when she spoke of the incident that set off the segregation. Humans and shifters used to live in peace and harmony, but a mutation in a strain of genes caused some shifters to become more difficult to be around, their primal instincts lacking control.

Her mother spoke of packing up their home and heading to Mountain View Crest. It was an uncertain time, but with over twenty years passing, most had come to an acceptance of their separate worlds.

Anna first met Matt on a red moon night. As he sniffed around her, his dominance drew her closer. His strength, his desire, his massive bear size had her body and whiskers twitching. She swished her tail and kept moving in circles with him, as they started a mating dance, two potential lovers eyeing their prize.

Anna was in her fox form when he found her. Matt picked up her scent and was drawn in a way he never anticipated. He needed to claim her, make her his own. The heated stares and exchanges between them sent a fire through him. His belly ached deeply and his throbbing cock told him what he already knew. She needed to be his. As they held their gaze, he slowly transformed back into his man form and introduced himself.

Anna knees went weak, coming back into her human form. He was exquisite, handsome, and between his bear form and his manly physique, she ached to reach out and touch. She shifted, recognizing the damp feeling between her legs.

“Matt,” he said, “Matt Stryker.” It was a hunting night, finding a mate, a lover, and primal urges were met without expectation, and Anna became the one he needed. It was a red moon night that would change their lives.

Anna’s full, rounded hips swayed as she circled Matt, her primal urges still running high. Her plump bottom sashayed in front of him, in place of her tail. She turned to look over her shoulder in a tease, and whispered, “Catch me if you can.” With that, she was back in fox form and running through the valley.

Matt was ready to play her game and shifted back. He was lumbering and large, but moved fast. Anna’s moves were quick and darting, moving side to side, to throw in a challenge. Her red coat with a flick of white on her tail left Matt hungry for more.

After a sprint and jaunt through the woods, Anna and Matt came to a clearing. Shifting back to her human form, she smiled a seductive smile. Tonight would be theirs. The red moon claimed them and their urges were too strong.

Anna loved being in her fox form. It was freeing. She was fast and flirty. In her human form, she wore extra weight and padding around her middle and bottom. She never questioned the changes, as it was all she’d grown up with. Her mother was fuller like she was, though her father was thin and tall. She just happened to get her mother’s genes, shifter and all. Her father didn’t carry the ability to shift, but once he fell in love with his wife, he knew she was the one for him. Anna was a half-breed, but shifted easily and felt comfortable in both forms.

Matt pounced on Anna and rolled with her. The primal urge drew them together, and as he came back into his human form, she joined him. Her plump body pressed against his. Her inner fox was driven by the moon. There was no questioning the need for mating. The red moon called you out. There was no judgment; there was only seduction and craving.

Matt slid the back of his hand over Anna’s cheek. “You’re gorgeous,” he said, staring into her eyes. He inhaled deeply, the scent of her lilac and hyacinth fragrance mixed with her pheromones and filled his nostrils. Everything about her spoke to his biological need. His hands slid over her body and came to rest on her ample ass.

Anna’s breathing was measured, watching Matt’s eyes cast on her. She wanted him, but while she could be playful, he would do the claiming of his mate. There was no doubt he was in control of the situation.

Her belly tightened with anticipation, wondering what it would be like to feel his thick girth inside of her. His strong, solid body wouldn’t disappoint, she was sure of it.

He knew he’d take her for his own, what he didn’t know was that she’d capture his heart in the process.

Matt rolled up overtop of Anna, pinning her below. Looking down at his mate, the driving force of the moon made him hungry for a taste of his new lover. Matt covered her mouth with his own, craving her in ways he didn’t try to understand. He needed her, and he’d have her.

Their tongues danced and his body responded. His thick shaft engorged, filling with blood, making it impossible to ignore. He wanted to stretch her open, to feel her hug him like a glove, hot and moist, taking him in. It was hard to keep control. He wanted to thrust into her hard and fast, but he needed to know all of her.

Matt moved from her mouth to her neck, marking her as he milked her skin. He lowered his head and stopped at her full breasts. Anna rolled her head and let out a soft moan as he scooped her bosom in his hand and slipped his lips around a nipple.

Matt’s need for her was filled with urgency. Tenderness would be spared for another night. He sucked her hard. Her back arched up in response. “Mmm, you like that, huh?” Matt grinned at his new lover.

She grinned. “A little rough sex never hurt anyone,” she said with a smile. She liked it raunchy, rowdy, and a little rough. She wanted to know the man she was with was in charge, and not some wussy afraid to mix it up and take her pleasure to the next level. If he couldn’t satisfy her, she’d move on. She wanted somebody in control.

Matt let a schoolboy grin spread across his face. He liked her already. Teasing and pinching her other breast, he bit her gently and scraped his teeth against her pebbled nipple. The moans that escaped from her lips told him all he needed to know.

Anna could barely control her hips. They were up and grinding, pressing to him. She wanted to feel him inside of her. Her thighs tangled with his, aching to pull him closer. With the moon’s magic lighting her inner fire, she needed him now. There was no time for waiting.

“Put it inside,” she groaned. Her body was churning. She was wet and hungry for his cock.

“Not yet, pussycat,” he teased. “We’ve only just begun.”

He could at least let her have a taste of what was to come. Matt drew his hand down between her legs. She was more than wet. Her golden honey dripped. He slid two fingers along her folds, and then pressed them inside of her.

Anna gasped and pushed onto his hand. “Oh, it feels so good,” she cried out as he moved his fingers within her. She wanted to ride him, taste him, feel him…but it was obvious he’d be in control and would make her wait for his cock.

By the time he gave her what she wanted, she was wrapped up around him, her thighs holding on tight. His grunts filled the night air as he thrust deeper and harder into her. His thick shaft split her open, spreading her lips wide and filling her. She whispered dirty words of passion to him and fell in love. Or what she thought was love.

They were inseparable for two years after that…. until fucking Bunny St. James. The upcoming red moon left her somber. She missed him so much.

  Chapter 3

Bunny played her part well. And as much as Matt appreciated the cover, it tore him to shreds that Anna believed he’d betrayed her. He never could, never would. She was the only one for him. Now he had to convince her of that, and regain her trust. Matt’s nerves of steel crumbled around Anna at times. She was his heart and soul. Watching her pain killed him.

She could never know the truth, she could never know that he was a Covert Operations Task Agent and was on a mission. If he was found out, he’d be a marked man, as would those close to him. A high profile case came up and a shifter needed to disappear from the human world…quickly. Only he was under high guard. That’s where Matt came in. He knew the only way she’d leave him was if he betrayed her…so he let her believe it. It destroyed him inside, but he had a job to do, and one that was crucial. He couldn’t trust it with a newer agent or one with less experience.

  His strength and precis
ion to detail teamed him with Bunny’s agility and ‘fast on her feet’ thinking. Team C.O.T.A. (Covert Operations Task Agency) was on a need to know basis only, and the heart of it was secrecy. They were sent out to save shifters being persecuted for crimes they didn’t commit. Humans were trigger happy, and often times shot before asking questions. Matt had been on enough missions that there were few others he trusted in the field with the most important jobs. He was one of their leaders and Bunny was one of their top agents. He just didn’t expect Bunny to fall for him. That wasn’t in the plan.

The night of the last red moon, he knew he’d run to Anna the way he needed her. He knew he’d need to be inside of her. He forced the sheriff to lock him down in the county jailhouse. A caged bear on a red moon wasn’t a pretty site. It was the most painful thing he had to put himself through… not being able to seek out his mate, his Anna, and letting her believe he was with Bunny instead. There were few people that could be trusted, and only another C.O.T.A. officer would understand. Under lock and key, Matt roared and tore at the bars of the cage, but they wouldn’t budge. His body needed to be free, but in this rare moment, it was now or never. If he was going to pull off the dangerous mission, he had to let her go. If she ever took him back, he swore he’d leave the agency and settle down, but there was no chance in that. She spit nails every time she saw him.

He saw the heat and lust in her eyes, but her stubborn will was strong, and she cut him out of her life. The way he needed her was unlike anything he’d ever felt before. At times it scared him, the powerful driving force that led him to one woman, one fox. Bears didn’t mate for life, but she was the only one that could tame him, and was the only one that he wanted. Anna Brentwood was his chosen one. It pained him not to be by her side.

Matt Stryker was larger than life. He was one of the town hero’s, a natural leader, and someone who was often in charge. And while his work life was thriving, his personal life was empty. He tried to move on, but it was pointless.
