“It’s a beautiful day,” Carrie says from the lounge chair next to the pool. She’s been sober for over a year now, and I’m so proud of her.

Soon after Dee and I moved from her apartment in the old Victorian, Carrie moved in permanently. She’d been staying with us in the apartment and, with the landlord’s permission, continued to live there. My sister had gotten tired of me pestering her to join us in New York. Plus, it was helpful to have Gemma to keep an eye on her.

“It most definitely is.” From my chair, I smile and wave to my friend, Chris Kenney, who’s just arrived with his family.

All of our friends and family are here today to help us celebrate Jade’s half birthday. We’ve acquired a healthy number of friends in the months since I’ve been in New York, and it pleases me to no end. They’re all rooting for us in the long and complicated adoption process. I’m allowing myself to feel a little confident. I have an ace in the hole. I helped our caseworker’s nephew kick his drug habit, so she knows we’re good people.

Isaac grabs a beer from a cooler and, locking eyes with him, I raise a brow. He grins and points to his mother. “It’s for her.”

I smile as Gemma waves to me, having noticed the interaction. The boy is looking good. He’s dropped some weight and he’s walking tall. I hear that he’s been sitting next to a cute girl in the school cafeteria at lunchtime who he has a crush on. I’m proud of him.

Dee appears from where she’d taken Jade to change her diaper and parks the baby carriage under a big umbrella. She’s smiling and laughing at something Gemma said, and dear god, she is beautiful. Sometimes, I still can’t believe that Dee is mine.

Mac barks and runs to them, seemingly horrified that he’d lost sight of the baby for any length of time. He’s grown into a beautiful adult dog and protector, making it his job to watch over her. Dee and I couldn’t be happier that no one ever claimed him. Mac is as much a part of our family as Jade is.

I’ll never forget the day I brought Dee to the hospital to see Jade for the first time. She was still a little hesitant in her decision to give fostering a try, but when the nurse placed the baby in her arms, Dee started to cry.

My heart fell, thinking that she’d realized she couldn’t do this.

But her next words allayed my fears. “I’m going to be a mommy,” she said through her tears. She looked up at me, her eyes shining. “I love you.”

That was a hell of a good day.

Today, I’m with the people I love, I have no urge to drink whatsoever, and the future is something I no longer dread.

This day is the best by far, with many more to come.
