Dragon Temptation (Crimson Dragons Book 1)
Page 31
Petal, will you—
It was printed on two banners, and she had to flick her eyes downward to read the rest. A tremble had already started in her hands. Was she ready for this? What if it was too soon? A million other questions exploded in her mind before she’d had a chance to finish reading it. Her brain had already filled in the words, and she was formulating her answer when the second half—much smaller writing—became legible.
Move in with me? :D
“Are you KIDDING me?” she howled, giving him a solid punch to the forearm that managed to bring about a wince. “That is not cool, Lex. Not cool at all!”
Her werewolf, meanwhile, was howling with laughter from the driver’s seat. So much so that he even passed her phone back so that he could still drive while using one hand to wipe away tears.
“You should have seen the look on your face!” he crowed. “You went so white at first.”
“Because I thought you were going to ask me to marry you!” she said, trying not to join in the laughter. She couldn’t let him know that he’d gotten the best of her. Then she’d never hear the end of it.
“So?”
“So?! We haven’t talked about that at all.”
Lex looked thoughtful. “Well, I guess.”
“Exactly.”
The truck came to a halt and he killed the engine, hopping out. She went after him, shaking her head still.
“Would you have said no?” he asked, waiting for her to catch up before he started walking toward the front door.
“I…I don’t know,” she admitted at last. “It’s moving pretty fast.”
“I know.” Lex gave her a kiss. “But you should know, the thought has occurred to me.”
She paused, then nodded. “Me too.”
Lex pushed open the front door, ushering her inside. “Good.”
Petal meant to ask him what he meant by that, but the third banner, surrounded by heart balloons and streamers took her breath away.
Petal Olson. You are the love of my life. My mate, my world. My everything. I couldn’t imagine a day without you.
Then in smaller letters in the bottom right: Turn Around.
She did, to find Lex down on one knee, a little black box propped open resting atop his outstretched palm.
“Petal, I don’t want to spend another day with anyone else. Will you marry me?”
She pondered him for a moment, looking down at Lex.
“That’s not fair, you know.” There was a mischievous twinkle in her eye.
On one knee, his hand still outstretched, she could see his nervousness grow.
“What do you mean?” He swallowed so hard his throat bobbed up and down noticeably.
“The banner out front? Making me think you were proposing with that. Then laughing like it was a joke, but then actually proposing after I’ve fully believed that you aren’t.”
Now he grinned. “Yeah, but it surprised you, didn’t it?”
She nodded. “Yes, that it did. You totally threw me off the trail, I’ll give you that. Don’t expect it to become a regular occurrence, but this time around you won.”
Lex laughed silently, nodding his head in agreement. “You still haven’t answered though.”
Not that it would change her answer, but she looked down at the ring he’d chosen. It was an elegant piece. The band split to the sides like a fork as it rose to the top, the interior of the split lined with increasingly large diamonds. The crowning gem was a square-cut piece held in place at the corners with four white-gold prongs. The entire thing glittered beautifully. Lex had done an excellent job. Sleek and beautiful without being horribly overstated. She loved it, and him.
“Just building the tension,” she said with a wink. “But I think I’ve made you wait long enough. Not that I ever was even considering saying anything but yes, Lex, I will marry you.”
She held out her hand and he slipped the ring onto it. Keeping her fingers in his hand, he rose to his feet, picked her up, and spun her around as they kissed a dozen little kisses, eyes open while they grinned at each other. All smiles from ear to ear, she had never felt happier than she did just then.
“I cannot believe how in love with you I am,” he whispered in his ear. “You’ve made me happier than I ever thought possible.”
She kissed his neck before nuzzling her head into the crook between it and his shoulder. “I love you too, Lex. This whirlwind ride has been insane, but I can’t imagine doing it with anyone else. You complete me.”
Petal sighed, and with it the last of her old life and the personality she’d adopted slipped out of her. The past was in the past now. It was time to start her new life, with Lex by her side.
She couldn’t wait.

Amelia Jade
Amelia Jade loves to write the stories of tall, growly shifter men and the women who come to love them. Living out in the backcountry near the mountains, she keeps her own alpha male close by to keep the bears away and keep her warm. In her downtime (which is rare), she loves to read science-fiction with a dash of fantasy. You can often find her curled up in front of the real wood-burning fireplace, her nose firmly buried in a book or her favorite e-reader. The cold can’t bother her there!
