Puppy Love

  “Remember when I told you at the club that I wanted to ask you something?” he said.

  I nodded, afraid to speak.

  “I wanted to ask you if you would go out with me. On a date.”

  “A date?” I said.

  “Yeah,” he said. “A date. I like you, Allie. You’re a little weird sometimes, but so am I. Besides, Barkley likes you, and that’s a pretty good recommendation.” Then he started blushing. “I liked you the first time I saw you. And no, it wasn’t just because you’re beautiful.”

  I started to say something. Then I realized what he’d just said. He thought I was beautiful? All along? I couldn’t believe it!

  “A date,” I said when I was able to form an actual sentence. “With you.”

  He nodded.

  “I think I can do that,” I said. My head was spinning. All I could see were Jack’s eyes and the summer light on his hair. Everything else was fuzzy, like in a dream.

  “There’s something else I’ve wanted to do,” said Jack.

  That’s when it happened. IT. The kiss. Jack leaned down and his lips met mine. I forgot about my old sweats, my messy hair, Megan, where to put my nose, when to breathe, everything. I felt Jack’s arms go around me, and I put mine around him. I don’t know how long the kiss lasted. Maybe only a few seconds. Maybe an hour. It didn’t matter. It was perfect.

  Jack pulled his head back and looked at me. He ran his tongue over his lips. “You taste like bacon,” he said.

  Okay, so it wasn’t all like it is in the movies. But life usually isn’t. Besides, this was better. Jack and I laughed. Then he kissed me again. As we kissed, Rufus barked. I looked down. He and Barkley were wagging their tails.

  Remember when I made that wish on the Dog Star? I never said what I wished for. Well, now I can, because standing there with Jack, my wish came true.
