by Emilio Salgari

On the 18th, the Kishenganj battery and its seventy-five cannons was captured by the British, the men defending it receiving the same fate as those in the royal palace.

On the same day the kotwali or City Hall was taken and a hundred and fifty Indians, among them several members of the Imperial family, who had surrendered after having been promised their lives would be spared, were shot and hanged!

By the 20th, Delhi was in British hands, and then the slaughter began in earnest.

The city was ransacked. Thousands upon thousands of Indians were murdered by troops drunk with gin and bloodlust, without regard for age or gender. The brave men who had fought to free India from the British fell, many after killing their wives and children with their very hands so they would not fall victim to the victors’ cruelty.

On the 24th, Sandokan and his companions, after having obtained General Wilson’s permission, left the devastated city. The hangings and the shootings still had not stopped and thousands upon thousands of bodies lay in the streets, rotting where they had fallen. De Lussac, disgusted by the savagery, had requested and obtained permission to accompany them to Calcutta.

The mutiny had been suppressed. Only the brave Tantia Topi, and the proud and beautiful Rani of Jhansi still waved the flag of freedom with a band of brave men among the thick jungle and vast forests of the Bundelcund.[25]

Fifteen days later, Sandokan, Yanez, Tremal-Naik, and Darma after having generously rewarded Sirdar and said their long goodbyes to the brave Frenchman, boarded the Marianna and set sail for Mompracem.

Surama, who had by then conquered Yanez’ heart, the tiger and Punthy accompanied them.
