Her eyes focused on mine, and I ran my fingers through the fur along the back of her neck. "We're stuck like this," I said, choking around the tears in my voice. "Unless I... unless I agree to give my heart—"
Rowan licked my cheek and nudged my chin with her nose. Her ears were relaxed. Not pointed. Not confident. But she wasn't defeated, either.
"Are you sure you're okay with this?" I wanted to break down, to let loose wracking sobs until I was too tired to open my eyes. But I didn't. If Rowan was okay with being a wolf, at least for a little while, then maybe I could last long enough for my father to break his own rules. "I know... I know you enjoy being a wolf but, you like being human as well."
She nudged me again and wagged her tail.
I nodded. It was a sacrifice. Until now, keeping our entire relationship a secret had been a challenge. My father's demands were no different. The sacrifice may have changed, but the outcome would be the same.
Someday soon, my father would crack. It was then I'd get my pendant back. And my wolf.
The biggest challenge now was not being the first to break.
