“All right, honey. We’ll wake up Kayla so she can say goodbye to her daddy before he leaves.”
“Thanks, Rachel.”
With a soft laugh, her mother-in-law wrapped her up in a warm hug. “It’s all part of being a Carmichael, honey. Brent and his brother seem to have the gene a little stronger than the other men, but all of them have a need to help others.”
As Rachel left to go wake her granddaughter, Char walked into the bedroom she would now be sleeping with Kayla in tonight instead of her husband. Brent had his overnight bag in his hand and the look on his face said he was going through everything in his head.
“I have your flight,” she told him, handing him the information. “Leaves in one and a half hours and will get you into New York early tomorrow.”
“Thanks,” he said with a sigh, engulfing her in another warm hug. “I called Benjamin, asked him to be there for you while I’m gone.”
She rolled her eyes. “Kayla and I will be fine.”
He grinned. “I’m sure you will. But he’s there just in case you need him.”
“Fine, Daddy Carmichael,” she teased, giggling when he smacked her lightly on her rump. “They’re waking up Kayla so she can say goodbye. Better go give her a couple minutes and then your dad will drive you to the airport.”
Taking her hand, Brent led her back down the hall where the family was waiting quietly. He dropped his bag and her hand to scoop up their little girl.
“You’re leaving again,” Kayla mumbled, frowning.
“Do you remember me telling you about Uncle Corbin?” he said softly. She nodded. “He’s in a little trouble and needs me. I’ll be home as soon as I can, honey. I promise.”
A tear dripped down her cheek but she nodded and hugged her father. He picked her up, holding her tightly, singing softly in her ear. When she calmed down, he handed her to Char, who held her close. After dropping a soft kiss on her lips and their daughter’s forehead, he picked up his bag and was gone.
Melanie walked up and put an arm around her. “You married a good man.”
“That I did.”
“Now, why don’t you let me put Kayla down to sleep and you can open up some of our racier gifts. You know,” she added with a wink, “so you can hide them from Brent if they’re too scary.”
Spluttering a little laugh and glad his family would help her get through the rest of the evening, Char agreed. Sending out the hope that Corbin’s wife would be fine and her husband would be able to return in a few days, she let her sadness go. After all, Brent would always be this way and it was one of the things she loved most about him. She couldn’t love and hate it; that was too confusing. Instead, she would just be glad that she had a man who would go out of his way for those he loved.
Tonight, that was Corbin. But she knew he would come back to her and Kayla as soon as he could.
Smiling as his uncle Steve brought out a chair and waved toward it, she sat down and instantly was handed a gift. Four gifts down, she was pretty sure this was more embarrassing than the housewarming gifts she and Brent had received when they first moved in together. Then, it had been paddles, slappers, and for those with a sick sense of humor, ginger. Brent’s family was more varied in their offerings. They received three nighties, several bottles of edible massage oil, a couple racy videos, and from his sister and brother-in-law, a set of cheap, fur-lined handcuffs and a see-through paddle.
“See-through?” She giggled imagining Brent’s expression when he saw it.
“The guy at the store said it’s deceptive in its appearance,” Michael explained. “So you might want to hide it.”
Laughing softly, Char nodded. “Thanks for the warning.”
By the time she joined Kayla in the king-sized bed, she realized any worry had left her long ago. Char felt good. No. Better than good. She felt comforted. And loved. And maybe she could take some time to write this week. Kayla squirmed over and curled up next to her, quickly drifting back to sleep.
Charmagne had married the best man in the world and she knew it. Why had she ever put this off?
