Elevated Threat

Max’s telephoto lens could just make out a section of the Wana-Razmak Rd. The road was empty. Not one car or truck went by. There were no birds in the air and no creepy crawly things could be found on the ground. It was as if every living thing inside the dome from last night’s fireworks had just disappeared. The more they looked, the more astonishing it was.

All too soon, Kamran waved them into the truck and they grudgingly obliged. By the time the trucks made their way down the mountain and back to the road, a few cars had arrived heading west. They were no doubt heading to see what the great light in the sky had brought upon them. Not a single car was coming from behind them. There were no young men sticking AK-47’s out of car windows. All the fear Richard and Max felt on the way there was replaced with relief and disbelief over what they had witnessed. While the truck trudged down the mountain, Richard banged out the story of a lifetime on his keyboard. Max turned on the satellite radio to see if anyone was yet reporting on the event.

Max tuned the radio to Aljazeera radio just in time to hear them running a story coming from northern Afghanistan. Many prominent imams were calling for all “true believers” to assemble at an encampment outside of Fayzabad on July 8th to join the jihad to avenge the attack on the brothers in Wana.

Max looked at Richard and turned off the radio.

  Nova Scotia

This summer’s day was a glorious one for watching the quiet beach at Minas Basin in Nova Scotia. Sitting on the rugged small porch at the Beach Café on Spencer’s Island Beach Road, with the sun just peeking around the corner of the building, made the coffee and scone taste even sweeter than usual. The lone gentleman on the porch enjoying this lovely afternoon opened his laptop and logged on to one of his favorite Seattle bloggers.

The gentleman had been following Anne’s blog since her early days. He especially enjoyed her fresh outlook on the world’s events. After the events of the last few days, every major news outlet had been producing columns with titles such as “America’s Back.” But Anne’s blog this morning was titled “What If – This is Just the Beginning?” The gentleman appeared captivated by that thought.

Before he could finish Anne’s column, the sun started to wash out the characters on his laptop screen. To compensate for the sun’s intrusion, the man removed the hat from his head and propped it up on the table against the side of the laptop. Fortunately, Panama hats have wide brims, and when situated just a certain way, can cover a laptop’s screen from the sun just perfectly.

Before he could resume his reading, his phone indicated a new text message had been received. He casually read the message:

“Auntie says she will be in town this afternoon. The entire family will be meeting at 6:00 p.m. tonight in the Woodshire Inn in Windsor Town. We saw a wonderful play last night. Act One was played out perfectly by the actors. I’ll tell you all about Act Two when we are all together this evening.”

William Robson spent his college years writing short stories that were predominantly designed to rattle his professor’s stuffy demeanor, he graduated into a career creating commercial software. His next 30+ years were predominantly consumed with creating software applications that helped drive America’s corporate engine. Through it all, William continued to surreptitiously write stories designed to stretch the reader’s imagination. Eventually, the clarion call to become a full time writer overwhelmed his desire for a regular paycheck, and he exited the corporate world as quietly as he entered it. He hopes you enjoy reading about mind stretching “What-If” situations as much as he enjoys writing about them. Please join William on his Facebook page or send a comment on twitter @ WilliamRobson99. He sustains a running blog where he posts a few of his favorite stories and discusses scenarios that are currently taking place in this crazy world we live in at www.whatifnews.com.
