“Get to the air shuttle!” he yelled at the pilot, who he saw standing behind the guards. Sam watched as the pilot turned to run toward an air shuttle, which was clearly where Vargas was heading as well. She couldn’t let him get on that; he would disappear and they would have a hard time finding him again.

The pilot got there first and tried to start it. Nothing happened. He jumped out and began running for the car. Vargas had just reached the air shuttle and was opening the door when he saw the pilot run past him.

“Where they hell are you going?”

The pilot didn’t look back. “It’s won’t start! You’re on your own!”

He was screaming for the pilot to wait for him as he began to run toward the car, too.

Sam had to act now. She launched herself at him from the side, knocking him to the ground.

“You bitch! You’ve ruined everything!” Vargas screamed at her as he climbed back up to his feet. He bent to reach for the computer that had fallen to the ground when she tackled him, but Sam scrambled over and snatched it up. She stood up and backed away from him slowly, keeping her eyes on him. She didn’t dare turn her back on him in case he had a gun or something.

  “Give that back to me!”

  “No way!”

“You could have left with me, lived with me, and we could have lived a very nice lifestyle together. Now that’s all ruined!”

“Don’t worry, you’ll be getting a roommate from the IDJ very soon. Maybe they can assign you to room with your good ol’ buddy Clark Davidson.”

“Fuck you!” He leaped at her but she dodged out of his way.

“You are pathetic, Vargas.” Okay, maybe she shouldn’t be antagonizing him like that, but she’d been dealing with him all afternoon.

“You’re going to pay for all the trouble you’ve caused me!”

  “Sam!”

She could hear Dom calling out to her but she didn’t take her eyes off of Vargas. He made to grab her but she twirled out of his way. Dropping her computer to the ground, she put up her fists and shifted around like she’d seen some of the fighters do.

Vargas snorted at her as he bent to pick up the computer. Pleased he had gone for the bait, she snapped her foot out fast, kicking him in the face. She heard something crack. He dropped the computer as he stood up, covering his nose and wailing. “You broke my nose!”

Vargas wasn’t giving up. He held on to his nose with one hand and reached out with his other to grab the computer. She jumped on his back and wrapped one arm around his neck, squeezing. He turned around and around as he tried to reach back to get a hold of her and pull her off, but she held on tight. He started wheezing and tapped her arm.

  “Can’t—breathe.”

She looked up just as a couple of IDJ agents and Dom arrived. The agents looked at one another. “Uh, who do we help?”

“Sam, let him go. The IDJ agents can take it from here.”

She released her chokehold and put her feet on the ground. The IDJ agents quickly took hold of the wheezing Vargas and slapped on a set of electrical cuffs. Sam could feel Dom’s eyes on her and she turned to look him over to make sure he was okay.

He frowned at her. “What were you thinking, chasing after him like that?”

Oh, he wasn’t happy. “I was trying to keep him from escaping, and keep him from stealing my computer.”

He took a step closer to her. “You could have been injured.”

She also moved closer to him. “I handled him okay.”

Dom snorted. “Where did you learn how to do a chokehold?”

Sam stepped even closer smiling. “Zara the Amazon. I’m her biggest fan. I kicked his ass and broke his nose.”

He moved until he was just inches from her. “Yes, you did, my little bloodthirsty hacker.”

Sam reached up to cup his cheek. “Are you hurt?”

  “Not really. You’re shivering.”

She held her hand up in surprise, watching as it shook uncontrollably. “I don’t know why I’m shaking. And I feel really cold all of a sudden.”

“You’re going into shock from all the traumatic events. Take a deep breath.”

“Shock?” Her knees started to buckle and she would have fallen if Dom hadn’t caught her, lifting her up in his arms. “Oh man, don’t tell Amelia or Zara, or I’ll lose my badass reputation.”

He chuckled. “Your reputation is safe with me.”

She laid her head on his shoulder and sighed with relief as he carried her to one of the IDJ shuttles. She felt safe in Dom’s arms, like she was finally home.

“I love you, Dom. I wasn’t going to tell you that until later, but after all this, I realized there was no reason for me to hold back. I don’t expect you to feel the same—”

  “Sam.”

  “Yes?”

“I am completely and totally in love with you.”

He loved her. Her heart was racing and she felt joy like she had never felt before. She just wished she would stop shaking.

  “Dom?”

  “Yes?”

“I think I’m going to pass out.” She heard people talking around her but their voices faded. She didn’t care, Dom had her and he loved her. That was all that mattered.

  Chapter 19

  A couple of hours later

Dom was waiting for Sam to come out of the bathroom. She’d woken up again a few minutes after passing out. The healers had checked her over and, except for a few bruises, she was fine. She insisted that the healers check him over, too. They gave him a healing shot and wanted to check him into a hospital for twelve hours of observation because of the blows to the head that he’d taken, but he refused.

After he and Sam gave their statements to the IDJ, one of their agents drove them back to their hotel. He insisted that she soak in the tub to calm her nerves while he ordered them room service. The food arrived a few minutes ago. He knocked on the door.

  “Sam, the food is here!”

  “I’ll be right out!”

He paced back and forth thinking about more ways he could convince her to stay with him. She’d said that she loved him, but they hadn’t had time to talk about their future. He wasn’t going to let her walk away. He would follow her wherever she went because she was that important to him.

Sam’s cell phone on the nightstand started ringing. He picked it up. “This is Samantha Porter’s phone.”

  *****

Sam walked out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around her body. Dom stood there holding her phone out to her.

“It’s the healer here at the hotel for you.”

She took the phone and lifted it to her ear. “This is Samantha Porter. The results? Oh yes, that’s right.” She turned her back to him. “Really? Okay, thank you.” She hung up, placing her phone back on the nightstand.

“What did you order?” She walked over to the table to peek under the plate cover.

“I thought you told me you were feeling okay.”

She sat in the chair pulling her feet up under her. “I am.”

“Then why was the healer calling you?”

  “To give me the results.”

  “What results?”

“Oh, I guess I didn’t have a chance to tell you. Earlier, I didn’t really go to the gift shop to get souvenirs. I went to look for a pregnancy test, but they didn’t have any. So I went to the hotel clinic to see the healer. Oh, is that fruit?” She reached for a small dish and bit into a strawberry. “Yummy.”

She could tell Dom was losing his patience. “What were the results?”

  “What results?” she asked innocently.

  “Samantha!”

She shrugged her shoulders. “It was—positive.”

  “Positive?”

He came over to kneel in front of her. “Positive as in—”

She nodded. “Yes, we’re going to have a baby.” She wasn’t sure how he was going to react. “Look, you don’t have to do anything. I can take care of me and the baby without you.”
/>
Dom pulled her into his arms and carried her to the bed. “You will not be alone in raising this baby. After we marry, I will find us a home where we can set down real roots.”

“Wait a minute, who said anything about getting married?”

He laid her down and took her towel off tossing it behind him. “I did.”

“A girl likes to be asked, not told.” Her voice cracked a little when he nuzzled her breasts with his face. He moved up to hover over her lips.

“Okay, I’m asking. Will you marry me?”

“Only if you promise to give me hot sex every night for the rest of our lives.”

“Deal.” He kissed her, sealing the promise with his lips. They had a lot to work out still, but they had the rest of their lives to do that. She was with the man she loved and he loved her. Life was good.

  Epilogue

Pheonix was tired. His fight tonight had gone fine; he had won his match. The problem was that his heart just wasn’t in it anymore. Going to the after party was pure torture. He watched Amelia and Nigel mingling with guests and then dancing together. He decided he had had enough and left early.

It wasn’t that he still wanted Amelia. Sure, he was attracted to her. She was a beautiful woman, one any man would want. Nigel was a bastard, but he was a lucky bastard, and he would certainly never hurt her. She’d chosen him. Phoenix could respect her decision and it looked like Nigel made her happy. He didn’t begrudge Amelia her happiness. He had known what having that kind of happiness was like, once, a long time ago. Before everything changed.

He decided to head back to his room and get some rest. He didn’t really sleep, hadn’t had a good night’s sleep in years, not since coming back from the war. Rushing to get to the elevator right before the doors closed, he found that there was another person inside.

“Sorry,” he turned to look at the woman. She looked human but there was something exotic about her. She had long black hair and soft, pale skin. Her eyes were deep green, and she had to be one of the most beautiful females he had ever seen.

“No problem,” she responded with a soft and musical voice that had his cock paying attention.

  “What floor?”

  “Five.”

Five? That floor held VIP suites and a few of the Venetians. “Are you a VIP or are you visiting someone?”

  “I’m visiting my sister.”

  “Who’s your sister?”

She hesitated, biting her bottom lip. Damn if he didn’t find that sexy as hell. “Lydia Waters.”

Fuck me. She was a Venetian. “Are you planning to work while you’re here?” Not that he had used their services before. Now, for the first time, he was tempted.

She put her hands on her hips and glared at him. “No. I don’t do that.”

He liked the fire in her eyes. “I didn’t mean to offend you. I presumed wrong. I apologize.”

Sighing, she nodded at him. “It’s not the first time someone has made that assumption.”

“Let me start over. My name is Phoenix.” He held out his hand to shake hers.

  “I’m Olivia Mann.”

Her last name was different from Lydia’s. It made him curious. “It’s nice to meet you, Olivia.” He held onto her hand a little longer than necessary, enjoying the feel of her soft skin. He planned to get to know her a lot better. No one had sparked such interest in him so quickly before. He had to figure her out.

“It’s nice to meet you, too.” The door to the elevator opened onto level five and she stepped out. “Maybe I’ll see you around.’

He smiled and gave her a wink. “Count on it.”
