“So did you guys make out or something?” Madelia asked jokingly with a grin but then Natasha was suddenly quite.
The wide grin vanished of Madelia’s face. “OMG… you had sex with him, didn’t you?”
She turned to look in the other direction. “Doesn’t matter now… for some reason which I don’t totally understand, he said we can’t be together.”
“Hello Kevin…” a voice echoed over the phone.
“Alex? -It’s 9pm. You never call this late at night. Is there something wrong?” Kevin said.
“Kevin, I’ve got some things I need to tell you about…”
Kevin quickly interrupted him, “I have found a lead.”
“Huh?”
“Leonard gave me an address of a possible building used by T-Rex to torture his victims. Before he died, he had asked me to check it out. I went over with Derik to check out this address. It turned out to be where T-Rex keeps photographs of possible targets. We saw a couple of photographs of many individuals but it turned out to be a trap. He left a bomb in there that almost blew us to piece.”
“What? Leonard left a lead? Why didn’t you tell me about any of this earlier?”
“Before he died, he warned me not to disclose this information to anyone. Going into that building gave us another lead. Right now I’ve got an address... a possible address where T-Rex might use to torture his next victim.”
“Where are you right now?” Alex asked.
“I am heading home right now…”
“Kevin whatever you do, do not go back to that house.”
Kevin was now confused at his command. “Why? Did something happen?”
After a brief silence, Alex finally spoke. “I’ve got really bad news… your friend’s body was found lying in the park few hours ago. It was found on that same spot Leonard’s body was found with the same note on it…”
Kevin’s eyes widened.
Derik drove into the parking lot in front of a really large building with the organizational name carved out boldly on it, ‘Threat Control Unit’. He got down from the vehicle and then walked into the building.
He walked past the security that stood at the entrance of the building. There were several men and women dress in matching uniforms inside the building. As Derik walk pass them, he felt all their gaze fell on him. Some officers who were operating on their computers behind the desks all stopped to stare as he walked pass.
He wondered why everyone was acting a bit differently today. He wondered if he had something on his face or was it the way he dressed. Derik walked straight to William’s office ignoring them all. All eyes were on him when he entered the office.
William was engaged in a closed door meeting with Lawrence. They just stared blankly at him as he stood there.
Then it finally hit Derik why everyone was all acting up. Lawrence must have told everyone about him and the news had now circulated to everyone and there was nothing he could do to undo that.
Derik then quickly turned go back. “I am sorry for interrupting…” Derik said reaching for the door knob “…maybe I should come back when you are done.”
“There is no need…” Lawrence answered almost immediately “…because we are already done here.” He then signaled to the huge dark skinned soldier standing behind him and then nodded his head at him as if passing some kind of instruction to him.
The solider immediately took the hint and then got behind Derik. He quickly grab his arm tightly, restraining him. Derik’s struggled against his tight grip but he was too strong.
“Derik…” William then called out to him disappointedly. “You are under arrest.”
Then he stood up and walked over to him. “I can’t believe I trusted you enough to put you on the force.”
William forcefully striped the badge off Derik’s shirt while the solider held his arms tightly. “Who would have believed my most trusted officer is a shifter?”
“I’ve always known there was a shifter on the force. I never could have imagined it would be you.” William then moved away from him disappointedly. “…I can’t believe I put my daughter’s safety in your hands.
“It wasn’t my fault that I was born this way…” Derik uttered in a tone that sounded like he was starting to breakdown. “…I never even asked to be born. You all have condemned me and decided I don’t deserve to live simply because of what I am. All I am asking is that you give me a chance to prove I am not one of those killers out there.”
William was silent for a moment. Looking over at Derik, he asked, “Why are you here?”
Derik looked over at the both of them “sir… the shifters in this city are the least of our problems for now. There is an even greater threat lurking around here in the city. Some nights ago I encountered a group of killers that goes by the name Beocraft…”
Silence fell in the room.
Lawrence grew more interested in what he was about to say. “Go on…” he said coldly.
“The three tortured victims we had found in this city for the last seven days were all killed by the members of this society. Late night another body was found in city’s park. He was said to have been visited at his home by this group of vicious killers. These guys are vicious killers and they will stop at nothing to get what they want. They have to be stopped before any more bodies are found. T-Rex as you all right now had attempted to kidnap your daughter two times in a roll. T-Rex will make another attempt to kidnap Natasha. We all know he is not going to stop until he gets what he wants … unless we stop him first.”
Lawrence then looked at the dark soldier still holding up Derik’s arm firmly. Lawrence nodded at him and he then let go of Derik’s arms.
William said. “This T-Rex guy… his name and face cannot be found on any of our database or any record. We can’t place a positive id on this guy. It’s almost as if this guy ghosted himself. How do we stop someone like that?”
Derik said “I’ve found where they usually meet and tonight we should strike them with everything we’ve got.”
Kevin walked out of the autopsy room with Alex following him behind trying to comfort him. Kevin had just witnessed the devastated nature of kern’s body and he was left in plain shook.
Kevin walked over to a bench that lay just beside the corner and sat there looking numb. He then buried his face in his palms. Alex took his seat beside him and exhaled loudly in frustration watching Kevin breakdown.
“I hate to break it to you this way but your friend’s house just went down in flames. The fires started around 3am early this morning, turns out he left the burner on before he was killed.”
Kevin looked at Alex with swollen eyes and a curved smile. His eye was red from crying. He suddenly started laughing while tears flowed from his cheek. Alex was now bothered by Kevin’s psychotic behavior. “Kevin? Are you alright?” he asked waving his hands over Kevin’s face but Kevin just kept staring blankly into space.
Kevin kept staring at the door which led to the autopsy room. He had a sick smile on his face which disturbed Alex.
He suddenly tapped Alex and then pointed his finger at the door like he was trying to show him something.
Kevin was staring directly into the eye of a masked hooded figure just standing there beside the door. When Alex turned to see what Kevin was showing him but there was nothing there at the door post. He became disturbed when he saw Kevin mumbling some words as he kept pointing towards the door.
“The masked man… he’s standing over there.” Kevin mumbled.
Alex turned look at the spot he was pointing but there was no one there.
“Kevin, there’s nothing there.”
But Kevin kept insisting the masked man was standing over there. “Alex, can’t you see him. He is just standing right over there.”
Alex fears were finally coming true. “Kevin, you have to stop this. This is how Mrs. Lena started. This was exactly what happened to Mrs. Lena that led her to take her own life.”
“Alex, you’ve got to b
elieve me, am not insane. He is really standing over there.”
“There is no one there, you are just hallucinating.”
Kevin held him by his shirt. “I am not hallucinating…” Kevin sassed, “He is standing right over there.”
Kevin kept pointing at the masked man who stood there at the door just staring at him through his mask.
Alex moved over to hold him down. “Kevin, you have to stop now. You’re traumatized after getting to see the way your friend was murdered.”
Kevin was now all over Alex dragging his shirt. “I am not going insane.”
The individuals that sat on the benches waiting at the autopsy room were now beginning to stare. Alex quickly signaled to one of the police officer to come.
The officer struggled to get Kevin’s hands off Alex’s shirt. He then wrapped Kevin’s arm in cuffs and walked him out of the building.
Kevin sat quietly in the police precinct on a bench just at the corner inside Alex’s office. His both arm were chained in cuffs to restrain him from acting crazy or hurting himself.
Kevin sat there staring blankly at the wall. His chest was heaving rapidly. The expression on his face was numb that he didn’t noticed when the door pushed open and Derik walked into the office. He took a moment to look at Kevin. He wasn’t looking like himself anymore.
“…he’s been this way for about an hour or two now after we got back the autopsy room.” Alex said looking over at Derik.
“What the hell happened to him?”
“He’s in shock. I think this behavior is normal for a person who just lost someone dear.” Alex said “…Kevin had been insisting he had been seeing a masked man but he wasn’t really there. This started right after we got out of the autopsy room where he had gone to see the remains of his friend.”
“I also heard there was a lady with a similar case…”
“Yes! Mrs. Lena. She also had a similar problem of perceiving things that’s were not actually there and this happened right after she lost her daughter. When saw the brutal nature of her daughter’s corpse, Mrs. Lena couldn’t take it anymore, so she took her own life.”
Derik then looked over at Kevin “…is that why you had him cuffed up? So he wouldn’t hurt himself?”
“…this was exactly how Mrs. Lena started out until she finally decided to end her own life. We have to rush him to a mental hospital before he gets worst” Alex suggested.
Derik quickly objected “…no no, there is really no need for that yet. Let me take care of him, he will be fine.”
“Are you sure about that Mr. Derik?”
“Alright, do you mind explaining to me what the show you were putting up earlier was all about” Derik asked Kevin as soon as they both got into the house. “Alex now thinks you are going crazy…”
Kevin walked up close to him and said “I need you to look straight at me and tell me do I look like someone that is crazy to you?”
Derik looked over him for a moment then he said “I really don’t know the answer to that. Barely an hour ago you were acting up in Alex’s office.”
“Derik, you’ve got to believe me for some reason which I don’t know yet I can see this masked man even when other people around me can’t”
Derik scoffed, then he walked away from him. “Would you just listen to yourself? Anyone hearing you would think you are crazy.”
“I can really see him even who other people around can’t…”
“…the masked man is not invisible. He was captured on camera after he killed Mrs. Eulich.”
Derik then noticed Kevin wasn’t paying attention to him anymore. Kevin just kept staring at something behind Derik.
“What’s wrong with you Kevin?” Derik taunted
Kevin suddenly raised his fingers and started pointing at something behind Derik. Derik slowly turned to see what he was pointing at but there was nothing there.
“Derik, He is here again and he is just standing over there.” Kevin said pointing his finger at the masked man who just stood there with his arms folded just staring at them from his mask.
Derik turned to see what it was Kevin was pointing at but there was nothing there but an empty wall. Derik turned to look at him “Look Kevin you really got to put an end to this drama and get yourself together. Just accept the fact that your best friend is gone and just move on with your life. You cannot continue living like this else you’d end up hurting yourself or worst, end up like Mrs. Lena.”
“I am not making this up…” Kevin insisted “what do I got to do to proof to you that he is really here and standing over that wall, watching us both.” Kevin said pointing his finger at the wall behind Derik.
Derik looked over Kevin disappointedly “we are going to invade Beocraft tonight and I was going to count on you to lead the operation since I don’t know exactly where the meeting was held.”
Derik walked up close to Kevin looking dead serious at him. “This is my only chance to proof to them all that I could be useful on the force. So get your act together and don’t blow this up for me.” Derik left the room.
The room was left in sheer silence. For a moment, they just stood there staring into each other faces. Then suddenly, Kevin yelled out at him. “Go away!” He blocked his ear with his both arm and shut his eyes.
No… and not crazy. He is really standing here staring at me.
Then he opened his eye and found himself staring at the masked man. The masked man stood there looking at him. He didn’t move an inch. He just stood there folding his arm looking at Kevin.
“No… I am not crazy. He is real. He is here. He is watching me…”Kevin said it out loud blocking off his ears, looking away from him.
“What do you want from me?” Kevin barked out at him. “Why won’t you just go away?” Kevin was now beginning to raise his voice.
Kevin caught a reflection of himself on the mirror that hung there on the wall. He started laughing out loud at his reflection on the mirror. His hairs where totally scattered and his face was covered with dirt.
“Oh my God” he laughed, scattering his hair with his hands. “…I am really going insane.”
He looked into the mirror to see if he could catch a glimpse of his reflection on the mirror but it wasn’t there. He stare back at the wall, the masked man was still standing there.
Kevin then suddenly stopped laughing and then started crying. He saw his reflection on the mirror but the masked man’s reflection wasn’t there.
Kevin then brought out his phone and then turned on the camera to take a picture of the masked man. But there was nothing standing over the wall when he looked through his phone camera. When he brought down his phone, the masked man was still standing there.
“What the hell is happening to me?” Kevin mumbled as he got up from ground and then starting walking towards where the masked man stood.
“…am I seeing things?”
When he got really close to where the masked man stood, a cold shiver run down his spine when he felt the masked man’s gaze on him. He slowly lifted his arm to touch him.
Kevin was really expecting his hands to pass through him. He was stricken with horror when his hands rested on the masked figure’s chest. He felt him. He felt faint heart beat of the masked man though his chest. He felt his breath pouring down on him.
Kevin felt his heart pounding rapidly.
He is really here. I am not crazy, he is really here.
He quivered.
CHAPTER TWENTY ONE: AFRAID TO BELIEVE
Kevin looked up slowly at the mask man’s face, he felt his gaze him. The masked man stood there with his arms folded staring coldly at him through his mask.
It scared the hell out of Kevin that he was standing really close to him –a figure that had kidnapped him over a year ago.
Kevin slowly walked away from him in fear. He wondered why the masked man just stood there without moving an inch. He was starting to have doubts if the masked man was really there with him.
A sudden cou
rage grew within him, he wondered whose face was behind that mask. Kevin then walked slowly towards him raising his hands to his face to take his mask off.
When he’d almost reached his mask, he gasped when he felt the masked man’s sudden grip on his arm while it was in mid-air. Kevin startled backward and then fell onto the floor. The grip on him was released.
Quickly looking up at where he stood, the masked man was gone. He looked around the room, he was really gone. No sign of him anywhere.
Kevin just sat there on the floor holding his wrist. He could still feel the pressure from the grip. That was what convinced him the mask man was really there with him.
He suddenly remembered what Leonard had said to him.
…they are watching you right now.
He felt his knee tremble.
Could it be the masked man really isn’t gone and he is just standing at a corner watching me and I am not seeing him? He thought to himself as he remembered circumstances surrounding Mrs. Lena death.
What if Lena wasn’t really insane as we were all lead to believe?
What if the masked man had also been there with her in that room and we could not see him?
What if we are the insane once for not believing her? We called her crazy just because we couldn’t see what she saw.
We have always been the crazy ones for not being able to see things that are actually there.
What if the mask man is here right now, watching me?
What if…
Frank opened the door to William’s office and then he walked right in. William was on the phone with someone when he got in. Frank took an empty seat in front of the desk William sits at, then he sat facing William.
Frank sat there watching him while waiting for him to complete his call. William finally hung up and then dropped the phone on the table, then he apologized to Frank for keeping him.
“Sorry for keeping you waiting, but I had to take that call. That was Elena on the phone…” William said.
“Elena…you mean your wife?” frank asked optimistically
“Yes. She just called to inform me that she’s finally completed her training course at the military camp and she’s coming back home tomorrow.” William said with a little tone of excitement in his voice.
