“Well that’s great…” frank said with a big smile. “We should welcome her home with a big celebration.”

William laughed it out then he said “you did not come to my office just so we could talk about my wife, or did you?”

The smile on frank’s face finally died down. He then adjusted his chair to get closer to William. “It is about the lab experiment to produce a shifter that will work with us on the field…” Frank spoke bringing his voice down.

  “Did it succeed?”

After a brief silence from frank, he answered “yes sir. We now have another shifter here in the lab. He is a lot stronger and faster and stronger than the previous test subject, Mrs. Eulich. Right now, he is undergoing a medical procedures to ascertain that nothing goes wrong when he gets out with us on the field.”

It was almost midnight. The full moon stood high in the sky shining brightly down on the forest trees lighting up the way as several armed uniformed men marched through the forest that night with Derik leading the way.

Kevin stood close beside Derik while they both led the troops of soldiers that followed them behind. Kevin looked around at the huge machine guns and rifles they had all carried along with them. Kevin reminisces over the last time he was here.

  “Get in…” Derik quickly said.

Derik quickly aimed his gun at another masked figure running very close behind Kevin. Then he fired at him. The hooded figure dropped on the floor.

Derik quickly drove away after Kevin got in. Kevin was breathing really fast out of exhaustion. He then turn to look back as Derik drove away, he saw the two hooded figures Derik had shot slowly getting up to their feet. Then all three hooded figures stood at a spot looking at them through their masks as Derik drove his car away out of the dark forest.

“For some reason, your gun did not harm them the last time we were here…” Kevin said with worries across his face. “…what difference will all this guns and rifles you brought along make?”

“The last time, I went for the heart and the bullet struck between their chests. They could quickly heal from that after they transform…” Derik said. “This time I am going to aim for the head, something they can’t recover from.”

“I have briefed the troops on this already.” Derik said look over at Kevin.

He saw the fear on Kevin’s face. Tapping Kevin on his shoulder, he said. “Cheer up, because tonight we shall put an end to T-Rex along with the rest of his confreres. We shall get justice for all the people he had killed in the past. We shall get justices for kern. It all ends tonight.”

Kevin just looked over at Derik with a feeble smile. He’d really wished he could take his words for it. He really wished he could just believe what he said.

He felt a shiver go down his spine. He had really wanted to find solace in Derik’s words but every voice in his head kept telling him to turn around and go back.

After about several minutes of marching through the forest, they finally came upon the old warehouse. They quickly surrounded the building while some troops walked up quietly and then positioned themselves behind the door ready to kick it down at Scott’s command.

Kevin looked around the building and had a gut feeling that something was terribly wrong. He didn’t hear any chanting coming from the building like the last time he was here. The whole surrounding was awfully quite and it scared the hell out of Kevin. He slowly began to retract from the building.

Scott finally gave the order and they kicked down the door. The soldiers quickly rushed into the building. The room inside was empty. There was not a single person there, not even the tables and chairs.

“There is nothing in here sir.” One of the men reported to Scott.

“It was almost as if they knew we were coming.” Derik uttered looking around at the building.

For a long second, the whole place was left in absolute silence. They suddenly heard faint continuous beeping sound. One of the soldiers saw the time bomb that’d been attached to the door.

“Run!!!” The soldiers who’d first seen the bomb cried out.

Before they could all reach for the door, the bomb exploded and the building went up in flame. Some of the troops ran out of the building screaming with flame burning on them while the rest were trapped inside

“What the hell just happened?” Scott yelled.

Derik’s eye widened. “Retreat!” he shouted “retreat!! We’ve been set up!!!”

They all started falling back running in the opposite direction away from the burning warehouse into the forest.

Suddenly a sharp knife pierced through Scott’s chest. He gasped in sharp pain as blood dropped from his mouth. The knife moved down quickly tearing through his chest. The rest of the troops stopped to watch in horror as Scott cried from the torture. It was almost as if something invisible was attacking him. Then finally they saw his heart hanging out from his chest. Scott collapsed on the floor dead lying down in his own gut.

They saw footsteps on the patches of leaves that lay on the floor. The footstep was moving slowly towards them.

“It’s him…” Kevin quivered in fear as he whispered in Derik’s ear. “It’s the masked man with a C mark on his mask.”

“You can see him?” Derik asked him skeptically.

“You can’t see him?” Kevin uttered with a puzzled look on his face.

“We are under attack…” One of the soldiers alerted.

Immediately, he began to fire in the direction which he saw the footstep coming. The same knife that had killed Scott suddenly pierced through his chest. The soldier dropped dead.

Almost immediately they all began to fire randomly in every direction. One by one, the soldiers dropped dead on the floor.

Kevin was terrified as he watched the masked man walking amongst the soldier. They couldn’t see him but he could.

The masked man walked pass by them, stabbing each soldier through the chest as he passes with a knife that was now covered in blood. None of them could see him.

It terrified Kevin to know he was the only one who could see the hooded figure.

  “I see him…” Kevin stuttered.

“What are you talking about?” Derik asked.

“I was never crazy. He was in that room watching us. He is here now and he is killing them off one by one.”

Derik watched the footstep on the ground walking pass another soldier. Then he heard the soldier let out a loud cry before he collapsed on the floor. His blood pooled around him.

One by one, Derik watched as the soldier let out a loud painful scream before they dropped dead on the floor right after. The fear was now starting to build up in Derik. His knees were trembling.

“We’ve lost before the battle even began.” Kevin said with a shaky voice as he watched the masked man sneaking up on the soldier from behind and pressing his knife through their chest. “We can’t win, Derik…”

Kevin quickly turned and started running off in the opposite direction. For a moment, Derik stood there to gaze upon the bodies falling on the floor. Some of them were still firing fiercely in all direction at something they couldn’t see before the knife came through their chest.

“We can’t win…” he slowly whispered to himself.

Derik turned in the opposite direction and ran into the forest. He heard the loud painful screams of the soldiers behind him as he ran. He shut his eye tight in bitter regret at the fact that he had led all those people out here to be slaughtered. He had greatly underestimated this organization and now they are all paying for it with their lives. He had failed William.

  CHAPTER TWENTY TWO: NATASHA`S MUM

There in the laboratory Frank escorted William into a room in the laboratory. It had the tag ‘special project’ written just above the door.

They both walked into the room and frank shut the door behind him. The room inside was empty and dark except for the medical bed that was placed at the centre. Frank reached for bulb switch on the wall and then the turned it on.

&
nbsp; The red bulb that hung from the ceiling shone dimly across the room revealing the bald man that lay on the bed at the center of the room. Both his hands and feet were strapped to the bed with chains restraining his movement.

“Why the chains?” William said looking over the bald man as he sleeps. William examine him closely.

He suddenly opened his eye in a way that startled William. William moved back in fear at the color of his eyes.

“I would move away from him if I were you…” Frank warned “he is a little unpredictable and dangerous at the moment. So I decided that it is best we put him on chains, for all our safety.”

William took a closer look at him. His face lit with recognition. “Wait, Isn’t this the guy that’d raped my daughter?”

Shady suddenly raised his head up at William opening his mouth as though he wanted to bite William’s head off. William quickly retracted back. Shady hissed as he returned to his sleeping position.

“Why on earth would you use a thug for a mission this important?” William berated him, “This Mission is too important to be left in the hands of just some thug and especially a guy who raped my daughter.”

“Sir, there are a number of reasons I chose him for this experiment.” Frank explained “…before we successfully carry out the experiment on Mrs. Eulich, we had some other lab attendant who had volunteered for the experiment but they all lost their lives during the genetic transmutation process. For this new project, I worked on improving the genetic characteristics of the test subject such as his strength and speed as well that is why I decided to bring in Mr. shade over here as a specimen for the experiment. I never could have imagined the experiment could succeed at first trial.”

“The truth is finally out, so you brought me in here as your lab rat after all…” Shady said in a pissed tone. The chains on Shady’s arm rattled as he struggled to break free.

The chains slack when he relaxed. He let out a scoff “…so much for giving me a second chance at life.”

“I turned you into something better than your previous self.” Frank said to him.

“You used me!” Shady raised his head up angrily to get up from the bed but the chains restrained him from reaching frank. For a moment they stared into each other’s eyes.

“I promise you punk when I get out of here, which you know I will, I will come for you and I will tear you apart from limp to limp.” Shady spoke in his face.

Frank knocked him out with a hard blow to the head and shady collapsed back into the bed.

“We are currently working on a procedure to erase his entire memory, it would be like learning from the start…” frank said “…he won’t be able to remember a thing. He would undergo a re-education exercise. That is where we shall introduce him to the mission after his memories has been erased. He would be taught all he needs to know about the mission. We will be giving him a new purpose in live. He won’t remember a thing from his past after we are done.”

William said “time is not on our side, we need this project to be ready as soon as possible.”

“We shall begin protocol to erase his memories as soon as possible.” Frank said.

The door suddenly burst open and then the receptionist poked her head. “I am really sorry to interrupt sir…” Catherina quickly apologized “Mr. William, there is someone here to see you… he said it’s urgent.”

They quickly followed her out. Then Catherina brought William out to where she had asked the visitor to wait. William was surprised when he saw Derik.

Derik nodded at her with a smile for attaining quickly to his needs. Catherina returned the smile and then took her seat in front of the computer screen. Her attention was fixed on the computer as she continued to type.

Derik then quickly walked up to William struggling with the numerous files which he held in his hands.

“It was a complete blood bath yester night, sir. I watched our men each die like flies while they fought off something impossible. We weren’t prepared for the horrors we met.”

“How many men survived the attack?” William asked wearing disappointed look on his face.

“None sir… we’ve lost all our men.”

“Eighty highly trained soldiers all lost their lives in just one night?” William said in total disbelieve “where is Sergeant Scott?”

“He is dead sir.” Derik answered him disappointedly “he was the first soldier that’d gone down.”

Derik then explained “we walked right into a trap and instantly lost ten of our soldiers in a bomb explosion. The rest were killed by something we couldn’t see with our eyes, but we could all see its footprints.”

“You are simply saying magic was involved?” William asked.

“Am not a strong believer in the art of magic but what I witnessed yester night cannot be explained by science.” Derik explained “this is definitely voodoo magic…”

“…an attack that killed all my men and somehow, you had managed to survive.” William frowned at him, “Mr. Derik, is there something you are not telling me.”

“I fled the scene before they could get to me. Sir, I know what’s running through your mind and right now I know you have no reason to trust me but you have to believe me. Whatever this organization is… I don’t know but this is something bigger than us.”

“I will contact the mayor to get assistants from him so we can stop this group before they escalate beyond our control.” William said.

Then suddenly a man walked clumsily walked past Derik pushing him accidentally. All the files and papers in Derik’s hand dropped and scattered on the floor.

“Ahhhh!” Derik let out a frustrating yell.

The man quickly apologized as he bent down to pick them all up but Derik quickly stopped him

“Don’t worry its fine.” Derik quickly said “…I’ll get it.”

  “You sure?”

Derik nodded his head at him “don’t worry about it.”

“Am sorry once again… I wasn’t really watching were I was going” The man apologized before he left. Derik bent and then began to arrange the files on the floor.

A picture hanged out from one of the files in his hands. It quickly caught William’s attention but then Derik quickly pushed the picture into the file.

“Wait… let me see that” William said stretching his hands to take the picture from Derik.

William’s eye widened when he looked over the picture. “How the hell did you get Elena’s picture?” William turned to look at Derik with a shocked expression on his face.

“You know the lady on that picture?” Derik asked him equally looking surprised too.

“Of course I know her, she is my wife!” William answered.

Silence fell between them for a moment.

“If that’s your wife on that picture then she is in danger.”

“I don’t understand. What are you talking about?” William’s face suddenly became dark.

“A day before yesterday, I got an address that could lead us to T-Rex or where he might be keeping his victims before he tortures them. So I decided to check out this location along with Kevin. We had entered the building with the anticipation of finding T-Rex or maybe a victim he might be keeping there but when we got into that building, we found ourselves in a room full of pictures hanging on the wall. Some of them were crossed off with a red ink while the rest were still unmarked. I figure that the marked pictures were the percentage which he had already taken down including Mrs. Eulich, Leonard and Murphy.”

Derik quickly reached for his pocket and then brought out his phone “here… You need to see this. I took a video clip of the pictures in the whole room.”

He played the clip and then handed the phone over to William to watch it. William could see all the pictures that covered the room there in the video clip both the once that were marked and unmarked. William also saw his own picture there on the wall.

“…there was something about your wife’s picture that caught my attention which m
ade me take it out from its frame. All the pictures there in that room had been there for a while that they were all covered in dust. All the pictures except this one…” Derik said pointing over at Elena’s picture which William was holding. “Her picture seemed recent like someone had just put it in there few hours before we had stumble upon that building. At the back of that picture, there is some kind of address written on it.”

William quickly turned to see what was written at the back.

“44 Rashbrow Street” William read it out loud with a puzzled look on his face.

“Does this address mean anything to you? Maybe that’s the house where your wife may be staying?” Derik said to him.

“No… you don’t understand.” William said “Elena is in a secured military base now where she is being trained but her training period is now over and she is coming back home today.”

Both men stood there looking at each other in silence.

“Sir, I suggest you call her right now and tell her not to make that trip. If she comes back, T-Rex will kill her.”

William quickly took out his phone and then dialed out Elena’s number. He placed the phone over his ear listening to distant ringing. The phone rang out, nobody picked up.

He quickly dialed her number again and still no reply. Worries began to show across his face as he dialed the number for the third time and the phone just kept ringing without anyone answering it.

William heart was starting to feel heavy. He began to have this gut feeling that something was wrong. He quickly dialed out another number and then placed his phone beside his ear. He then heard a voice from the other end answer. “Hello, this is Michael speaking from the military camp centre. How may I help you?”

“This is William Martinez speaking, please can you put my wife through I need to speak to her urgently.” William said.

“What’s her name again sir?” He asked.

  “Elena Martinez…” William said

“Elena?” Michael asked with his tone suddenly changing.

“Yes, that’s what I said.” William then asked. “Is something wrong?”
