“Madre De Deus,” Paul Castle cried.
“My pappa told me you were involved.” Frankie said calmly to Sal, who threw his hands up in defense.
“Hold on there Frankie.” Sal pleaded. “We can do something to cover up their deaths, but stop and think son. Carlo was my brother, I wouldn’t have him killed!”
“I won’t lie to you uncle Sal.” Frankie said sarcastically. “You both are dead men! The question is, will you die quick, or will it be a long drawn out painful death. Paul you get one chance and one chance only. Tell me how to find Locata and your seeds will survive. Lie or hold back and I’ll erase your name and line from the face of the earth!”
Paul Castle looked into the eyes of the three young men and knew they would do as they said. “It was Sal’s idea to have Carlo hit.”
Sal cut in, “You lying sack of shit!”
Frankie smashed Sal in the mouth with the butt of his pistol, and Sal’s front teeth snapped off, and bloody froth flowed from his mouth.
“Locata’s from Tampa. He has the west coast of Florida and the gulf coast. He wants to take over the eastern seaboard, but his base is in Tampa. Promise me you won’t touch my family!”
“I gave you my word from the start.” Frankie said, then raised his pistol and fired one round that struck Paul in the forehead. It exploded from the back of his head in a shower of blood and brain. Paul’s body flew from the chair and crashed to the floor.
Frankie turned to Sal, and said. “Your turn. How do you contact Locata. Do you have an address or phone number?”
Sal looked at his nephew and knew that he would never survive the night. “Fuck you Frankie. Do you know what it’s like to live in the shadow of Carlo?” he spit. “Fuck no you don’t and you never will!”
“So you’re gonna make this hard then I guess!” Frankie stated. “Jimmy get me something so I can tie this asshole up!”
Jimmy left the office and came back a few minutes later with a roll of packing tape. They taped Sal to the chair, then gagged him. Frankie picked up a box cutter that the manager was using as a letter opener. He walked over to Sal, and said. “You’re family so I’m giving you one last chance!”
Sal looked up with hate blazing from his eyes. Frankie used the box cutter to cut out Sal’s finger nails. Sal screamed into the gag, his eyes tearing from the excruciating pain. Frankie waited to let the full force of the pain wash over him, then he started in again. He stopped, after seven of Sal’s nails were gone. Then he unbuckled Sal’s pants and zipped them down, reached in and pulled Sal’s dick and nuts out. Sal mumbled urgently and Frankie looked into his pleading eyes.
Frankie removed the gag and Sal blurted out the information. Bishop quickly wrote it down, then Frankie had Sal repeat it.
“You wielded the sword that slay my father and because we’re blood I won’t kill your sons. But, you on the other hand are a dead man!” Frankie grabbed his genitals and cut them off, then stuffed them into his screaming mouth.
Sal’s privates effectively silenced his screams and Frankie taped them in place. Then he watched, as Sal choked on them. He looked at the puddle of blood that was forming between Sal’s legs, then fired one round into his gut. Sal’s eyes widened as the additional pain assaulted him.
“Let’s go,” Frankie said softly, as he replaced the mask and headed for the door.
* “We know where to find the man who ordered the hit on my father.” Frankie said to Ransom. “All we need to do is go to Tampa and get him!
“It’s a little more complicated than that.” Ransom said. “We’ll be in uncharted territory so we’ll need to be careful and survey the area well before we strike!”
Frankie nodded his head in agreement, then asked. “When will we set out?”
“As soon as we lay our dead to rest. Baron get Lois. Will, you get Lavern. And I’ll get Em and Celia so we can let Sophia and Cita know what has happened. Drake, Trace, Tim, contact all of the men and tell them to meet us at the warehouse tomorrow at 10:00!”
The men started filing out and Ransom stopped Frankie, and said. “You’ll be head of your family and it’s important that you remember that we’re family too. Always have a ace in the hole son. Never let the mob know of your true ties to us. You see the treachery displayed so always have a safe guard against it. We are that safe guard. Things will change as time moves forward and you’ll need to change with them. I won’t be around too much longer I’m afraid, but there will always be a Kane that you can rely on!”
Frankie looked in the old man’s eyes and saw his love and concern. And the tears flowed freely.
Ransom pulled him into his arms and held him tight, then said. “As long as I have life in me, you can come to me day or night and I’ll be there for you. So will Baron!”
* * * * The next morning, all of the Kane men met at the warehouse where Ransom sat on a crate.
“We’ve got to avenge the deaths of our family members!” Ransom said with authority. “Problem is, we got to leave our turf to do it. I want volunteers to speak up now, so we can get a plan of attack set up. I’m going so ain’t no use trying to talk me out of it!”
Drake, Trace, L.J, Lao, Turk, Prince, Tim and Lefty all stepped forward. When Baron stepped up, Ransom waved him back. “You got to stay and keep business in order. When I asked for volunteers, I didn’t mean for all of you to step forward. Drake, Trace, Prince, L.J. Baron gonna need help keeping things in order, so I can spare Tim, Lefty, Turk, Lao and Blake. All the other elders gonna stay. Ain’t no telling how long we’ll be there, but say two weeks, on the safe side. Since everybody wants to go, I see I got to choose who goes!”
Bishop stepped forward followed by a contingent of young men. Lil Will, B.J, Adam, Devon, Tre, Jacky, Spence and Jimmy. Frankie stepped up beside him, as Bishop spoke. “Uncle Ran, I can see where you’re headed business wise. And never would I disrespect or dishonor you, or any of the elders. But a new era has arrived and we’re the future. I think we should all go!”
Frankie spoke, as soon as Bishop finished. “Uncle Ran, the talk we had last night was a prelude to this moment. You said there would always be a Kane I could rely on, well Bishop is that Kane!”
Ransom looked at the young men, smiled, and said. “A case of my own words comin back and bitin me in the ass!”
The men laughed, then Ransom raised his hands for silence, and said. “After the funeral, get with me and we’ll outfit you. I’ll give you the details then!”
* CHAPTER # 30 *
After the funeral, the men that were going to Tampa all left. They took five cars and when they arrived, they rented three more. They drove all over the city familiarizing themselves with the town.
They rented motel rooms in West Tampa and a warehouse that was close to Davis Island where Paschal Locata lived. The warehouse was their base and they planned their strike from there.
Lefty and Blake along with the others had been going to the night clubs and other hot spots trying to get a finger on the pulse of the town. They found a club called The Two Spot, that was popular on Spruce St. . And being street wise they saw that all of the illegal activities were concentrated in that area of West Tampa. Blake and Lefty, in the week they were in town, became regular fixtures in the club. The man who owned the club was a tall, slim, light skinned man, named Hudie Smit.
Hudie had watched the two men and knew from their dress that they were high rollers. He also knew from the way they carried themselves that they were dangerous men. He wondered what they were up to and after his curiosity got the best of him. He sent his two henchmen, to find out what their business was.
Blue Powers and Dodi Pickett were both big men, but so were Lefty and Blake. Blue and Dodi stepped to the table where Blake and Lefty sat. Blue looked down on the men, and asked. “Y’all cats ain’t from around here, are you?”
Lefty lifted his drink, sipped, then looked up at Blue, and asked. “Who wants to know?”
“I wanna know.” Blue said. “You cat’s been
in here every night this week just observing. Being nosy could get a man killed around here!”
Lefty and Blake with lightning like quickness, pulled their guns out from underneath the table. They had held them concealed when they spotted the two big men approaching. Blue and Dodi found themselves staring down the barrels of two, big .45 automatics.
“What was that you were sayin about being nosy?” Lefty asked his pistol held steady, pointing at Blue’s face.
“Listen man,” Blue pleaded. “We had orders, that’s all!”
“Tell whoever sent you that he could’ve come and asked us what out business is.” Blake said sternly. “He probably wouldn’t have learned much, but nothing beats failure but a try!”
Blue and Dodi just stood there watching the guns that the men held steady. Hudie watched as his men just stood there. He couldn’t see exactly what was going on, but he didn’t like the idea that Blue and Dodi weren’t bringing the men to him. So he rose and walked over to where they stood. As he came to where his men stood, he saw that the two men held big automatics to his men’s faces.
“Hold on there a minute gents.” Hudie said. “Ain’t no need for that. These cats are working for me.”
“You should teach your boys better manners!” Blake said. “We were mindin our business when these fellows come over makin subtle threats. And we don’t take kindly to be in threatened!”
“It was just a misunderstanding boss.” Dodi said. “We didn’t mean these fellas no harm.”
“Could’ve fooled me.” Lefty said.
“Why don’t we put the guns away and talk about this.” said Hudie. “It ain’t got to escalate to shootin.”
“What you think Left?” asked Blake. “Think we can trust these boys?”
“Yeah, long as we got iron in our hands.” Lefty said.
“Come on fellas.” Hudie said. “Let’s be reasonable here.”
“We might as well give them a chance.” Blake said. “If they try any monkey business we can always kill them later!”
“You got a good point Blake.” Lefty said lowering his pistol and sliding it back into his shoulder holster. Blake did like wise and Hudie waved his two men off and sat down.
“I get the impression you fellas are players.” said Hudie. “There’s an outside chance that we might be able to do business together if you’re into what I think you’re into.”
“And just what do you think we’re into?” Blake asked.
Hudie looked at the two men, then said. “Let me explain to you my reasoning. Y’all ain’t users, I can see that from your dress and the way you carry yourself. Y’all done been around the action and I can see that in the way y’all observe the things around you. Y’all ain’t no nickel and dime niggas and I know that from the size of your bankroll, and the quality drinks you buy. Y’all cautious and easy to rile. I’d say y’all was killers too, but I don’t wanna offend you. This my spot and I’m sure y’all know this a front for something bigger!”
“You’re dealing on a decent scale.” said Lefty. “But I don’t think you’re capable of supplying us. But, you might be able to get us in with someone we know who can!”
“And who is this someone?” asked Hudie. “And if you know he’s capable of supplying you, why don’t you go to him?”
“We don’t actually know him, we know of him.” Blake said. “Since we’re not from here, maybe you can introduce us.”
Hudie looked at them, then said. “You still ain’t told me who this someone is.”
“Don Paschal Locata!” Blake stated.
Hudie couldn’t hide his surprise, but he quickly recovered, then said. “I’ve heard of him, but I don’t know the man personally. I’ll see if I can contact him thru some mutual friends. If I do, I’ll let y’all know. So, how can I reach you if I get in touch with him?”
“You can’t.” Blake said. “Either us or some of our associates will stop by and you can pass the message on then!”
“Alright, we can do it like that.” Hudie said. “In the mean time, y’all enjoy yourselves. Drinks are on the house!”
* “I don’t know where the men are from, but I do know they’re from the South.” Hudie said to Don Locata. Hudie had waited until the next day to drive out to Davis Island to tell the Don about the men who wanted to meet him. Hudie fronted for Locata in the drug business.
“I believe them niggers are from Jacksonville, try to find out. If you don’t find out, just hit them!” Locata said.
“Them some hard cats Mr. Locata!” Hudie said. “I can’t see them goin down easy!”
“I don’t give a fuck! Just take them out if you can’t find out where they’re from!” Don Locata said forcefully.
Hudie rose from his chair and left the room.
Locata turned to the three men that remained in the room, and said. “I believe the niggers are those Kanes, that Sal warned me about. I find it funny that all of a sudden some strange niggers are tossing my name around. Augie, I want you to beef up security here at the house. Angie, Vitto, you guys are to stick with me all day and night. Until we find out who these niggers are and how they know who I am!”
* “I don’t trust that nigga, Hudie Smit.” Lefty said. “Something about him doesn’t quite ring true. The nigga a snake!”
“Snake or not, he might be able to draw Locata out.” Ransom said. “We want him and all the adult males associated with him!”
“We can always make that nigga do like we want.” Tim said. “He won’t expect us to come at him in force so we need to do that tonight!”
“This is what we’ll do then.” Ransom said. “Left, Blake, y’all gonna go in the Two Spot as usual, but Adam, Rob and Tre will back y’all up. Frankie, Bishop, Jimmy and Lil Will, y’all are gonna be outside. If y’all hear gunfire, I want y’all to hit the club hard. B.J, Jacky, Spence, Turk, Tim, y’all gonna be the drivers, don’t leave the cars. Devon, Lao, y’all gonna be with me and we’ll keep the law off if it comes to it. We wanna try to take that nigga Hudie alive, if it’s possible. If not, then we’ll put him down!”
* That night as soon as it got dark, Hudie sat in his back office with Blue, Dodi and five other men that worked for him.
“I want at least one of them niggas alive!” Hudie said. “My major goal is to find out where these cats are from. I believe if we kill one, we’ll have to kill the other one too! Y’all spread out in the club so we can get the drop on these niggas. They fast and sharp, so stay on your toes!”
* Adam Kane, walked into the Two Spot and looked around. Then he headed for the end of the bar, that covered the back door. He sat on a stool and ordered a drink. His eyes scanned the club and he saw Rob Kane come in. He headed to an empty table in a corner, that covered the front entrance. Rob raised his hand and a waitress walked over and took his order. Tre Sumner walked to a table in the opposite corner, sat, called a waitress and ordered a drink.
The three young men were busy scanning the club for any sign of trouble, when Blake and Lefty came thru the front door. All five of the men were well armed. Each carried two automatics and were primed for trouble.
* Hudie had been watching the club thru the two way mirror, that was installed in his office. Five of his men, were positioned throughout the club in strategic positions. They had pistols and sawed off shotguns underneath their tables. Hudie saw the two men step into the club and he turned to Blue and Dodi, and said. “It’s show time! Be careful and make sure them niggas don’t catch y’all like they did the last time!”
Dodi and Blue pulled their pistols out and put them in their jacket pockets. They stepped from the office into the club area. Both men were determined not to get caught like they were the last time. So, their hands were jammed into their pockets, wrapped tightly around their pistols.
* “Here they come.” Blake said. “They got their hands in their pockets, and from the looks of things, they got guns in there!”
“Yeah, I see.” Lefty replied. “Look, Hudie’s comin out now.
Blake and Lefty pulled their pistols and thumbed the safeties off.
Adam, Rob, and Tre had their eyes locked on the two big men. Tracking them, as they slowly approached Lefty and Blake’s table. They pulled out their pistols and rose to their feet. “Let’s drop them, then snatch Hudie!” Lefty said.
Blake nodded. And as soon as Blue and Dodi were within seven feet of their table, they raised their twin .45’s and started firing.
Blue and Dodi, saw the two men rise and pulled their pistols. But it was too little, too late, as Lefty and Blake’s rounds ripped into them. The club was thrown into chaos, as people screamed and ducked for cover.
Blue and Dodi danced a jig, as the .45 slugs riddled their bodies. Both men discharged their pistols, but the rounds were nowhere near Lefty and Blake. They harmlessly crashed into the floor and ceiling.
Adam, Tre and Rob opened fire on the two dead men. And their bodies were tossed to and fro, as the wave of slugs washed over them. The three young men were concentrating so hard on the two men, that they never saw the five men that were scattered throughout the club. They stood with various weapons and unleashed a deadly hail of gun fire. A man sitting at a table behind Adam, stood with a sawed off double barrel shotgun and fired point blank into Adams’s lower back. Adam was cut nearly in half, by the twin blast that severed his spine and exited in a spray of shit, blood and guts. His body folded back on itself unnaturally as he crashed to the floor.
Tre saw the man shoot Adam and he trained his pistols in that direction. Before he could fire, a man rose from the floor next to him with a .45 revolver and fired three rapid rounds. They punched thru Tre’s ribs, pulped his heart and lungs and exploded from his side in a shower of blood. Tre was thrown sideways, where he crashed into a table and tumbled to the floor.
A man stepped behind Rob, who was firing at the man who had shot Adam. He placed his pistol at the base of his skull and squeezed off one round. It turned Rob’s brain to mush, before exiting thru his right eye in a mist of blood and pulped eye ball. Rob crashed to the floor face first.
