  “You will see Mikhal. Come.” They went through the door and Mikhal hesitated a moment when he saw that the pink of dawn shone in the sky, but then remember that he was no longer one who should fear the sun.

  “You brought me here under the stars when you wished to give me a proper wedding ring. You were doing your best to win my heart.”

  “Twas a mighty struggle, but worth every minute spent.”

  “Well now it’s my turn to give something to you. Come and sit.” She led him to the same stone bench and sat him down, sitting close to him, holding his hands in hers.

  “Watch.” The hues of the sky brightened as they faced the east wall of the castle. Alliana felt Mikhal tremble just a bit, the old fear still embedded somewhere deep inside. She squeezed his hand and whispered, “Now.”

  The morning sun crested over the wall, spilling its golden rays upon Mikhal’s upturned face. He gasped and a look of astonishment filled his eyes, and then he smiled, a tear of joy trickling down his cheek as sweet golden sunlight touched his face for the first time in over one hundred years.
