In Love With A Vampire

by M. J. Stevens

The sight and smell of blood drove Rellie crazy as well, and she couldn’t stay hidden at the corner of the streets any longer. She dashed out of the dark shadows and confronted the vampire, who looked startled and angry at the same time when he realized that there was another vampire on the streets.

“Hey!” Relle cried, standing face to face with the furious male vampire. “Share some of that loot, OK?” She flicked glances at all the victims who lay sprawled on the floor, covered in their own blood. Desire shot through her chest, compelling her to rush toward one of the victims now and feed on him.

“Who are you?” the vampire roared, fury etched on his face. “What are you doing out here?”

“I’m here looking for humans to feed on,” Rellie replied with a snarl on her face. She twisted her head wildly, looking at all the five helpless male victims.

“So am I!” the vampire cried. “I’m so thirsty and I refuse to share!” There was a defensive look on his face, and he looked like he was ready to go to war if Rellie challenged him.

“We’re vampires!” Rellie reasoned, tempted to feed on the victims now but somehow she knew that she had to deal with this furious vampire, who would probably try to stop her if she tried. “We’re supposed to feed on human blood. Let me have some!”

She was so wild with thirst that she could have just drunk her own blood if she could, but she knew that her blood wouldn’t be as tasty as the humans’.

Rellie snarled at this mysterious vampire whom she’d never seen before, and wished she could just rip his heart out from his chest. But like her, he too seemed like a newborn, and that wild thirst was evident on his face, just like hers. He could be a newborn vampire just like her, and for once, Rellie wanted to have a vampire mate, instead of an enemy. Maybe the two of them could become so-called vampire hunting partners and go on a wild feeding rampage together, and then it wouldn’t be so dull for Rellie.

“I won’t let you touch any of them!” the male vampire roared, his body tensing up, clenched fists at his sides as though he was ready to launch an attack at Rellie anytime if she made a move toward his victims.

Rellie was screaming in her head, the smell of human blood driving her hormones wild and crazy. How could she resist when there were traces of human blood around her, all of them so tantalizingly delicious, ready to be tasted?

Rellie wasn’t going to kowtow to this vampire. The feral lust was too overwhelming, and before she knew it, Rellie darted to the nearest bloodied victim, grabbed his neck and sank her fangs into it, tasting the red juice flowing from his veins.

The male vampire burst into a savage scream and zoomed toward Rellie, shoving her aside with such brutal strength that Rellie was sent flying through the air, and her body crashed hard against one of the alley walls, stained with graffiti.

Pain stabbed through Rellie, drawing shrieks from her throat. How dare this vampire attack her like that? No, she wouldn’t let him get away with this. There was no way she was going to give up without a fight.

Rellie had sustained some bruises and injuries to her body, but they quickly healed due to her natural healing ability. Recovering from the throbbing pain, Rellie let out a fierce growl and sliced through the air in the other vampire’s direction, and crashed hard against him with all her supernatural strength, and sent him rolling onto the ground.

But he was fast. He was able to spring to his feet in split seconds and then he leapt toward Rellie, his arms flailing wildly in the air in an attempt to deal her more physical pain. Using her agility, Rellie somersaulted in the air and landed a strong kick at the vampire’s face, and the sound of cracking skull split the air. The male vampire howled in pain, grabbing his head as the pain sliced through his skull. Riding on the momentum of rushing adrenaline, Rellie landed a combination of punches and kicks at the now weakened vampire, roaring in triumph. Before the injured vampire could fully recover and get back to his feet, Rellie dealt several more blows, almost pulverizing him. She continually attacked him as though he were some kind of a toy that she could play at her whim. She wasn’t going to let him recover, because she knew that he could heal fast due to his healing ability. And if he healed, it would be tough to tackle him because their strengths matched and the odds might fall in his favor.

Rellie was about to land another blow at the vampire when all of a sudden, she felt an inexplicable force slam into her, causing her to spiral in the air. She crashed onto the ground hard, and the impact sent pain slicing through her body like sharp knives. What had just happened to her? Who dare to toss her into the air like that?

A loud furious growl escaped Rellie’s throat, and she flicked her head up, trying to figure out what had happened.

The male vampire she had attacked earlier was still lying sprawled on the floor, whimpering in pain. He couldn’t be the one who’d flung her in the air. It had to be someone else, but who could it be?

Out of the corner of her eye, Rellie caught a glimpse of a woman who was standing at the end of the streets, shrouded by a veil of mist. Rellie couldn’t really make out her features, and even though she tried to zoom in with her supernatural sight ability, the woman’s face was icy blur. Rellie didn’t know where the mist came from, but it seemed to be purposefully there to conceal the mysterious woman. First, it was the mysterious male vampire, who was still whimpering on the streets like an injured dog. And now … this mysterious woman, who could be a vampire too.

Rellie was a hundred per cent sure that the woman had physically tossed her in the air like a beach ball. Her heart was intent on getting back at the woman, and she wasn’t going to let her off the hook that easily. Even though the bloodied youngsters were extremely tempting, her burning anger far outweighed the thirst. Being a newborn vampire, she was susceptible to a range of emotions, and anger was a lethal emotion which consumed her to the very core.

Rellie sped toward the woman at the end of the streets, eager to inflict harm on her. But before she knew it, Rellie felt an explosion of pain bursting through her body as she slammed against an invisible wall of forcefield which nearly cracked every bone in her body. Rellie toppled onto the ground like a wilted plant, the impact of the unexpected collision jarring every bone in her body, jolting her senses so hard that she went into a semi-conscious state momentarily, unaware what was going on. She took few moments to recover, letting her healing ability take over and strengthen her once more.

Throbbing drowsiness pumping in her head, she slowly got back to her feet, trying to make sense of what had really happened to her. She was standing face to face with the mysterious woman, who was about five feet away from her. The mist had completed dissipated, and she could see the features of the woman clearly. She had long white hair, as white as the snow, even though her features looked young. Her eyebrows matched the color of her hair, and her lips were light pink. She was clad in long-sleeved white dress, which reached her knees. She looked somewhat strange in such an outfit, but it added allure and mystery to her appearance. Who was this woman? What was her purpose of being here all of a sudden?

Wary of what had just happened to her, Rellie took a few careful steps forward with her arms stretched out. She felt an invisible wall of forcefield just right in front of her, and then Rellie realized what had occurred. Moments ago when she was darting toward this woman at lightning speed, Rellie had crashed against this naked forcefield, which dealt such a heavy impact on her it practically crushed every bone within her. But how did this forcefield appear here? Who summoned this forcefield?

Rellie flicked a quick furious glance at the woman, who was staring at her with a beatific expression, as though nothing serious had happened to Rellie.

“Who are you?” Rellie hissed, having the deep urge to strangle this woman who had caused her so much pain.

“I’m Dove,” the woman responded slowly, her voice calm. “Dove Havens.”

“I’m Rellie,” Rellie shot back in a warning tone. “You wouldn’t want to mess with me.” It was strange that
Rellie had no idea who she was, where she lived, or who her friends and family were due to this inexplicable amnesia. But for some weird reason, Rellie knew her name. That was the only fragment of memory that clung to her mind. Maybe as time progressed, she would remember much more than just her name.

“Rellie Edwards. Yes, I know who you are … and I’m here to save you from damnation.”

Rellie gasped. How did this woman even know her last name? What did this woman know about Rellie that Rellie herself didn’t know about? It was getting creepier by the minute, standing this close to enigmatic woman.

“How do you know my last name?” Rellie’s voice slightly trembled. “How much do you know about me? Who am I?”

Dove flashed her a mysterious smile. “It doesn’t matter how much I know about you. But I’ve seen all you have done since you’ve changed into a vampire, a newborn vampire. I’ve seen the path you’ve created for yourself … a destructive path. And if you continue to move in that direction, terrible things are going to happen … not just to you, but to the world.”

“You’ve seen me do those things? How are you able to do that? Are you stalking me?” Rellie’s heart pumped so fast that it almost burst from her ribcage.

“Maybe I should tell more about myself. I’m an Enchantress. I belong to the Enchanted Circle, a group of Enchantresses who are seers, having the ability to see into the future and predict the outcome. The mission of this Circle is to foresee the future for any possibility of the Apocalypse, and what we have been seeing these past couple of weeks isn’t that … encouraging. I’m sent here to do whatever it takes to stop this Apocalypse from happening. Believe me, the future that we saw is a ghastly picture of doom and death …”

“What does that have to do with me? I’m just a vampire with a thirst for blood. There are many vampires like me out there. So why pick me?”

Dove was quiet for a moment, adding to the suspense that was already sending crackers inside Rellie’s chest. Dove waved her hand in front of her, and Rellie heard a whooshing sound.

“I’ve made the forcefield disappear,” Dove said. “That way, I can talk to you much more intimately. Having a forcefield between us isn’t going to help our conversation progress. But let me warn if … if you try to attack me, I can summon that forcefield up in a split second, or even fling you across the air at my whim. Try anything funny and you’ll suffer.”

Fury exploded inside Rellie’s chest. She still hadn’t forgiven Dove for tossing her like some kind of trash, but she knew that Dove was extremely powerful, and wouldn't dare challenge her for what it was worth.

“What exactly do you want?” Rellie said with venom in her voice.

“I want nothing from you, except for you to do what I say,” Dove said. “Anyway, I’m going to tell you my main concern, which I’ve already mentioned earlier to you. The Apocalypse is going to happen very soon, and if we don’t do anything about it, the whole world will meet its tragic doom. We can’t let that happen.”

“What was the cause of the Apocalypse? You’re so cryptic about it I don’t even understand what kind of things would lead to all of this …”

“The Apocalypse was triggered due to a spell a particular Enchantress performed. We’ve have uncovered the identity of this Enchantress. Her name is Maggie Reils. She performed an extremely dangerous spell which brought you back from the dead. But the Revival Spell has far greater negative consequences that we’ve ever imagined, and it has unleashed an extremely dark force which will wipe the whole world.”

“What? You mean I was brought back from the dead? Yes, I know that I was brought back from the dead … but I was turned into a vampire. We all know that dead humans can be turned into vampires if done correctly …”

“Yes, that’s true. But you were dead as a vampire, not as a human. You carried vampire blood in you when the spell was performed. And it wasn’t just any blood. It’s the blood of a vampire who has bound himself to the darkest force in the universe, making him more powerful than ever. You were killed by a powerful thousand-year-old vampire named Catan. He killed you and injected his blood in your veins when you were dead. His blood is filled with tremendous dark force, which if tampered, can bring deadly consequences. You had his blood in you. Because his blood was so powerful, you were practically a vampire when you died. The Revival Spell was meant to revive dead humans, not vampires … and the Enchantress who performed the ritual didn’t know that you carried dark blood in you. The Revival Spell is one of the most powerful spells which have ever existed, and even the slightest mistake could bring grave consequences. The spell taps upon tremendous amount of power from the universe, requiring several sacrifices in the process. When that substantial amount of supernatural energy was unleashed and used on you to revive you, it also revived the dark force within you, magnifying the powers that came from the dark side. We all know that Catan is all-powerful because there is a source of dark power which protects him and gives him the boost of power he needs. But Catan has never been able to carry out his master plan, which was to take over the world and have every human and supernatural creature under his control … because the universe has always maintained the balance of both the forces of light and darkness. As long as there is enough good force in the universe, darkness can never find victory, no matter how many evil deeds Catan has carried out in the past. Unfortunately, things have changed after the Revival Spell was performed. Yes, like I’ve said, the spell alone taps upon the good force of the universe, using substantial amount of good energy. However, because you had Catan’s blood in you, it contaminated the spell, tipping of the balance of good and evil. The spell backfired, giving way for the dark force of the universe to gain some foothold, and now, there are more tremendous amounts of dark energy than good ones. Darkness is taking over, chasing away the light of the universe. And when the dark forces of the universe finally takes dominion, there will not be enough good magic left to protect our world, and we’d all be doomed.”

Rellie took deep gulp, feeling the strong impact of Dove’s words. “And if the dark force takes over … what will happen to all the supernatural creatures? What would happen to you?”

For the first time, Rellie actually saw worried creases on Dove’s forehead. Even Dove herself couldn’t muster enough composure to conceal the anxiety she felt.

“I’d lose my powers,” Dove replied in a heavy tone. “All the Enchantresses of the world will lose their powers. Vampires would lose heir ability to heal, and every other abilities which they have. Wingmen wouldn't be able to fly anymore. None of us would have any powers left. The only one who has all the powers of the world would be him. Yes … Catan. When that happens, we’d all be doomed. He’d be so powerful that none of us would stand a chance against him.”

Rellie strained against the urge to turn around and dash for one of the injured victims. The tantalizing smell of their blood drove her insane, and she would give anything in the world to taste their blood now. To her own surprise, Rellie was able to restrain, even though the desire was overwhelming her. Dove’s presence seemed to magically hold Rellie in her place like a magnet. Maybe Dove had cast some kind of magical spell on her, dampening her bloodlust.

“I don’t get it,” Rellie said, confused. “But what does that have to do with me?”

Dove paused for a minute, staring at Rellie with an ominous look which made Rellie’s heart sink like an anchor, so heavy that Rellie almost blacked out from that overwhelming sensation.

“You are Catan’s source of power now, Rellie,” Dove said slowly, giving importance to each of the word she’d uttered.

Rellie gasped. “What? What are you talking about?”

“You’re part of the dark force now. You’re now officially Catan’s source of power, and you are the key to his invincibility. As long as you’re alive, you give Catan access to the endless source of dark power.”

“Are you crazy? Are you saying that I’m carrying all this dark energy within me?”

Not just any energy. It’s an energy so powerful that it could destroy the world if it falls into the wrong hands, and in this case, Catan. Catan used to have an unknown source of power which he could tap onto so he could become invincible. But after the Revival Spell backfired and created a flaw in the balance of magical energy in the universe, the dark powers transferred from his secret unknown source to … you. You’re his Bearer, Rellie. You’re the Bearer of his dark powers, and as long as you’re around, he’s going to tap the source of dark powers through … you.”

“This is absolutely absurd! I’m a vampire, OK? I’m not some kind of Bearer! I don’t know what you’re talking about! Nothing you said makes any sense. What was Catan’s original source of power? Why can’t the dark powers of the universe stay there? Why do they have to be transferred to me … making me the Bearer? Why me?”

“Even I don’t know what is Catan’s original source of power. None of us knows. He keeps it hidden safely in his secret lair so none of us could ever find it and destroy it, making him powerless. But now that the Revival Spell has backfired and tampered with the magical balance of the universe, it created a loophole, transferring the dark energies to you from his original source of power. I’m pretty sure that Catan will look for you once he knows that you’re the Bearer. You’re his secret weapon now, his tool. He’s going to find you and keep you holed up in his secret lair because you are his Bearer. He’s going to get his hands on you.”

“I’m not letting anyone get their hands on me! I’m not! If he lays a hand on me, I’m going to rip his head off!”

“You’re powerless against him, Rellie. He’s all-powerful now. You’re just his tool for him to access great powers of darkness. That is why you have a state of deathnesia, or so-called amnesia. You don’t remember who you are, who your friends and family are, and your past becomes a blur, making everything in the past obsolete. That’s because darkness is taking over you, wiping away memories of the past, giving you a clean slate of evil. Your life has been turned upside down. You will have no recollection of your past, and you’ll begin life anew as the Bearer. That’s how dark magic works. But do not fret … because you’re not completely turned into the dark side yet. Darkness is permeating within you, but the hold is not complete. If we’re able to find a loophole and reverse the whole thing again, you may be free from the clutches of evil … from becoming the Bearer. You’ll be able to regain the memories of the past and live your life normally again, as long as the darkness has not completed its circle within you. But we have to act fast, because I can see in you that the darkness is spreading fast. The clock is ticking …”
