The Other Twin

Special thanks go to Jenny Day, whose outlook and story captivated me. Kudos to everyone else in the LGBT community for trusting me and sharing their stories directly with me – you know who you are. You are brave and beautiful and deserve every happiness.
Thanks also to LGBT activists for making sure everyone online knows who you are and that you’re not going anywhere! You rock. Thank you also to my BAME friends, both offline and online (especially via Black Twitter), who were able to advise this very pale writer on the complexities and politics of hair relaxants, interracial families and queer black youth.
A shout-out to Charlie Haynes at Urban Writers’ Retreat; your brilliant meals, cakes and wine fuelled much of this book, written in mad, intense binges at Stickwick Manor, Devon. Same to Deb and Bob at Retreats For You, Sheepwash, Devon; your legacy will continue.
Thanks to the Bang2writers for keeping me accountable, plus the wonderful book bloggers, book groups and crime authors who have welcomed me into their community. A fist bump to my fabulous beta readers, especially JK Amalou who read EVERY SINGLE DRAFT, right from the offset, even when The Other Twin was at its most screwy!
Thanks also to Joanna Penn, Amy Corzine and Paula Daly, whose insightful feedback gave me the impetus to keep going. Special thanks to Elinor Perry-Smith and Jenny Kane, whose rational and calm outlook always kept my feet on the ground, even when I wanted to delete the damn thing!
Lastly, many thanks to my family, especially my parents Ian and Jan, who instilled a love of reading in me at a very young age, making this book possible. Also, to my three long-suffering kids: Emmeline, Mummy’s sorry for always being busy when you wanted to play. Lilirose, you’re not allowed to read this book so DON’T try. Alf, I’m sorry I am so embarrassing – I’ll try not to include any sex in the next one, but no promises!
