Dancing with Fire

by Susan Kearney

Kaylin offered up a prayer to her father. Are you watching us, Daddy? We’re doing it. We’re making fuel. And no one is going to hurt us again. Her grandmother’s PI, Lyle Jackson, had taken several photographs which had provided additional evidence in court that Pavel and Asad had visited Henry shortly before his death. Quinn, Pavel, and Asad were in jail for life with no chance of parole. Dean Witman had been cleared of involvement. Apparently, he’d fronted the tanks to Pavel for free in exchange for future biodiesel to run his own operation. Sawyer had actually bought tanks from him to reopen Henry’s plant.

Best of all, the algae formula made a superior grade of biodiesel fuel. The golden liquid was grade-A pure.

Sawyer came over and checked the meter by her pump. “Eventually, we need to automate the systems.”

“Are you trying to make me obsolete?”

“Never. But I heard about a new dance troupe forming in town. They hire out to big companies to do commercials, amusement parks, and trade shows. Thought you might be interested.” He kissed her.

She kissed him back. “I’m interested all right, in you.”

Kaylin hadn’t wanted a dreamer. She’d wanted practical and steady. But with Sawyer she’d gotten it all, practical, steady, and dreams—what could be better than that?

Their son pointed to the tank. “Oi. Oi. Oi.”

“Oil,” Sawyer corrected him and put his arm over Kaylin’s shoulders. “That’s oil, son. It’s our future.”
