A Dusty Dreams Wedding

The little boy's eyes were huge. "Miss Jessie is my real aunt?"

Jessie nodded at him. "Yes, I'm your real Aunt Jessie. And when I get married to Brady, he's going to be your real Uncle Brady."

A huge smile flashed across Jacob's face. "I'm going to have a real uncle! And I have a real aunt!"

Jessie grinned at him. "And I have a real nephew!"

Jacob laughed. "I'm a nephew. That's a funny word." He suddenly looked troubled. "But my dad is dead."

"He is," Jessie said. "But he would have loved you so much. He never would have stayed away from you if that hadn't happened to him." She pulled up a picture of Jake on her phone and showed it to Jacob. "This is your dad."

Jacob looked at the picture for a long time, and then he smiled at Jessie. "That's my dad, and he was a hero."

Brady spoke up. "He sure was. He saved my life."

Jacob looked at him in awe. "Is that how he died?"

Brady nodded. "It is. But your dad saved six of us that day. That's why he's a hero."

"Wow, my dad saved six people."

Jessie said, "I'm going to get you pictures of him that you can keep always. And I'll tell you all about him, and your grandpa too."

"And I'll tell you something else," Devon said. "When Aunt Jessie and Uncle Brady get married, there's a whole bunch more family who are going to want to get to know you."

  "Really?"

Brady grinned at him. "That's right. My mom and dad and my sister and brother-in-law, just for starters."

"Are they going to be my family too?" Jacob looked hopeful.

"You bet," Brady said. "They're going to love meeting you."

"Mom! We're going to have a big family!" Jacob was thrilled.

Devon laughed and said, "I guess we are." A minute later, Jacob was hugging them all.

After two rounds of hugs, Jacob suddenly stopped and asked, "Isn't it about time for spaghetti? I'm starving!"

They all burst into laughter, and Devon said, "I'd better get the water boiling."

Jessie said, "Let me help you. Okay, Jacob, we'll have this dinner on the table in no time."

Fat snowflakes were drifting, slowly but steadily to the ground, to accumulate on the six inches that already drifted the landscape. Tiny white lights twinkled in the trees that lined the walkway to the pretty little white church. The bell in the steeple rang out a crystal-clear summons to the people who were making their way to the church. The light from inside cast jeweled colors onto the snow from the lovely, stained glass windows. Inside, the church was simply decorated with white ribbons, green holly and clusters of dark red berries. The organ was softly playing traditional Christmas carols.

As more guests were seated, and it drew nearer to the long-awaited occasion, the murmurs of anticipation grew. Finally, there was a hushed pause as the candles at the altar were lit and the organ stilled. Soft, traditional music began, and the guests all turned toward the back of the church. A couple appeared and started down the aisle, the lovely, dark haired woman in a simple, deep red dress and her escort in a dark tux. The flower on his lapel was the deep red of her dress and her bouquet was tiny red and white flowers. They were followed by an impish looking Becca, escorted by her tall, handsome husband and then by Kayla and Mitch. Next, the groom came down the aisle, holding his mother's arm, with his father at his other side. When they were all at the altar, waiting expectantly, the wedding march began.

There was a long pause, and then the bride appeared, as beautiful as any bride had ever been. A small boy held her hand and led her carefully down the aisle, stopping before Pastor Dean. The murmuring guests sat, and Pastor Dean looked at Jessie's escort with a twinkle in his eye. "Who brings this bride to her groom?" he asked in a strong voice.

The little boy spoke clearly. "I'm bringing my Aunt Jessie to my Uncle Brady." He handed Jessie over to Brady and then turned, flashing a bright smile at the charmed guests, and scampering over to his mother, who was standing witness to the wedding in her deep red bridesmaid's dress.

As the pastor began to speak, the bride's beloved brother, Jake, looked on, giving his blessing. It was truly a wedding made in heaven.

  The End

  Kat Carrington

Hi! I’m Kat Carrington and I write romance; sweet, spicy romance with happy ever after endings. I’m a grandmother and I’m having the time of my life letting my imagination go and telling the kind of stories that I like to read. And it’s been a wonderful bonus to find out that other people like to read them too.

I was born and raised in Indiana where I raised my kids and welcomed the most amazing people into my life, my grandchildren. Having grandchildren is my greatest blessing. I’m living now in South Carolina with my always supportive hubby.

From the time I learned to read, there was always a book in my hands. After I consumed all the fiction in my elementary school library I moved on to biographies, which I found to be endlessly fascinating. Once I retired and we moved south I discovered that I was ready for a new venture. I thought back to when I was in fifth grade and sat for hours at a time at my dad’s big desk writing stories with a pencil on notebook paper. One day I opened my laptop and started a story.

That first book took nearly two years to write. I’d write for a while, then forget all about it for a while. Somewhere along the way it changed from a whim to a real story that I had to finish. And that’s when Blushing Books changed my whole life. My book was accepted for publication and was released on May 29, 2019. Writing is now part of my life and I hope you all enjoy my stories and the characters I keep falling in love with.
