“That’s it,” he groaned as she took his cock deep and then swallowed. “Do that again, oh hell, that feels good.” She sucked him in harder, faster, reveling in the sound of his panting, his groans as he started to lose control.

“Look at me, open your eyes and look at what you do to me.” She raised her eyes, humming in enjoyment as she saw the look of intense rapture on his face. Suddenly he thrust forward, his back arching as he threw his head back. A deep, throaty roar left his mouth as his cum pulsed its way down her throat, warm and thick.

When he was spent, she took great satisfaction from licking him clean while he ran his hand through her hair.

“Damn, sweet, you trying to kill me here?”

Laney just smiled, running her hands up his thighs, then over his hard stomach to play lightly with the hair on his chest.

  “At least you’ll die happy.”

“I love you,” he said quietly, his gaze warm and soft.

“Do you now?” She grinned as he arched an eyebrow. “I’ll remind you of that when we have a disagreement.”

“I don’t need reminding,” he replied arrogantly. “No matter what, you will remember that I love you. No disagreement will ever change that. Understood?”

“Jeez, you really are a bossy ass.” She looked up at him in mock anger. “But luckily, I love you, so I’ll forgive you. Always. Now, is it my turn?”

“Hmm, let me think about that.”

She let out a mock-snarl as he laughed. Then he pulled her close to him and showed her exactly how much he loved her.

  Chapter Twelve

Laney sighed as she walked into the living room to find Dusty sitting on the couch, Devon beside her. Great. Just what she didn’t need today. Or any day, for that matter. Three days of having bodyguards follow her around and she was over it. Devon, she didn’t mind so much. He was good-natured and funny. Josiah was quiet, which was fine with her. Same with Cain. Her brothers could be annoying, but after spending so much time apart from them, it was kind of nice having them around.

But she was willing to bet it wouldn’t be a similar experience with Dusty.

“Guess you two are on bodyguard duty, huh?” she asked. Maybe Dusty was just here to meet with Cooper.

  Please. Pretty please.

“Yep, lucky us. So I guess you’ll be staying home today?” Dusty asked.

“Ahh, no, I’ve got some planning to do for the upcoming Alpha’s meeting.”

Dusty frowned. “Where you gonna do that?”

  “At Samantha’s house.”

Dusty sat back and rolled her eyes. “Great. Perfect.” She turned to Devon. “Rock, paper, scissors for who goes into the viper’s nest.”

She should have protested the description. But Dusty pretty much had it right, these meetings were like walking into a viper’s nest.

Laney shook her head and moved away towards Cooper’s office. She knocked on his door and waited for him to call out before entering.

“Sweet, everything okay?” Cooper looked over at her as she entered. She loved the intense way he stared at her, like nothing was more important to him than she was.

“Fine, I’m just off to Samantha’s place. Dusty and Devon are fighting over who gets to go inside with me.”

Cooper crooked his finger towards her, and she went around his desk, blushing slightly as he pulled her onto his lap. “Thanks for putting up with them. It means I can focus on other things and not worry about you all day.”

That tension she’d been holding dissipated. She was growing irritated at being followed around, but if it gave Cooper peace of mind, then she could put up with them. For the moment, anyway.

“I’ve got a surprise planned for you tonight.”

  “Really? What is it?”

“It wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you, now would it?”

  * * * * *

Thoughts of what the surprise was filled her mind as she made her way to Samantha’s house.

“So, who lost the draw?” she asked Devon and Dusty as they made their way down a small incline. One bodyguard walked ahead of her, one behind. She didn’t think there was much danger in the middle of the day walking on pack grounds, but she didn’t waste her breath voicing her thoughts.

  “I did,” Dusty said mournfully.

It was tiring, co-ordinating everything for the upcoming Alphas meeting. They were all coming to Shadowpeak to discuss forming a new Western States Council. It fell on her to arrange the social side of it while Cooper and his enforcers handled the security.

“Planning this meeting properly, so we impress these Alpha’s is important,” she told the other woman. “We’ve got to send the message that we’re united and strong. That requires planning and food. A lot of food. You may not think much of what we’re doing, but it has to be done.”

“I’ve got nothing against food, I like food,” Dusty said.

They reached Samantha’s place, and Dusty followed her inside. There were already about ten women sitting around the living room. Plates of cupcakes, brownies, and delicate sandwiches sat on the coffee table. Samantha stood and moved over towards them.

“Oh, you brought her.” Samantha half-sneered, looking at Dusty.

“Her name is Dusty.” She couldn’t believe she was defending the bodyguard.

Dusty picked up a tiny sandwich. “What is this?”

  “Umm, a sandwich,” Samantha answered.

“Nope. A sandwich fills my hand. A sandwich has ham or chicken or maybe egg. It doesn’t have,” she lifted the top layer of bread up, “cucumber. Cucumber is a garnish. It is not a filling.”

“Do you still need a bodyguard to protect you? I mean, surely the Alpha knows you’re safe here with us.” Samantha gave a high-pitched laugh, and Dusty rolled her eyes. A couple of the other women laughed, but most of them just watched on silently.

An older woman with salt peppering her dark hair stood and moved towards Laney. Instantly, Laney relaxed as she smiled at her Aunt Anna. One of the best things about returning to the pack was being with her family again.

“I think it’s sweet how much the Alpha cares about his mate,” Anna said gently. “We could all hope for such an over-protective mate. Well, some of us have them, right?”

Some of the other women nodded and smiled. Truthfully, Laney had been surprised by how well she’d been accepted. Apart from a few, most of the pack accepted her. Were even friendly. Many were grateful to Cooper for getting rid of Zachary. They’d lived in fear of him as well, something she’d never quite realized before.

“Right, let’s get started then,” Laney said briskly, giving her aunt a small smile.

  * * * * *

“What’s the surprise?” she asked as Cooper led her out of the house.

“It’s killing you not knowing, isn’t it?” he grinned then pulled a blindfold, like you might wear while sleeping, out of his back pocket.

  “This is kinky.”

He snorted. “Sweet, you don’t know what kinky is.”

  “Hmm, you could teach me.”

After he had fitted the blindfold over her eyes, he guided her forward, lifting her over any rough patches, her hand held tight in his.

  “We’re here.”

Where? She knew they were in the forest, her nose and ears told her that, but she didn’t know where.

When he drew the blindfold off, she blinked, trying to focus her gaze.

“Oh, my God.” She looked around her, trying to take it all in. They were standing beneath a large oak tree that was draped in twinkling fairy lights that wove through the branches and then wound around the wide trunk.

On the ground, under the tree, lay a red blanket and a scattering of plush, white cushions. A picnic basket lay open.

“You did all of this?” she asked, turning to him.

“Yes, all by myself. I even packed the picnic basket. I figured we never got to have our picnic, so why not now?”

“It’s beautiful.” She wrapped her arms around
him. “Thank you.”

“I know I’m not that easy to live with right now. I’m busy working to unite the packs and trying to figure out who is trying to hurt you. Perhaps I’ve become a tad overprotective.”

“Just a little. It’s okay. I’m not exactly all sunshine and happiness at the moment. I want to find who’s doing all of this as much as you do.” It was a ball of worry in her stomach that never went away.

“I won’t allow anyone to harm you.”

“I know. I’m surprised we’re out here alone.”

A slightly guilty look crossed his face.

  “We’re not alone?”

“They’re standing well away, but if we yell out, they’ll hear.”

“Someday I’ll have privacy back, right?”

He hugged her tight. “You will. So long as you don’t want privacy from me.”

  “Never.”

They sat back on the picnic blanket, and he pulled out the food, chicken salad, French bread stick and strawberry soda. All her favorites. Followed by chocolate and strawberries for dessert.

Laney lay back, her hand over her stomach. “I’m so full I can’t move. I’m gonna have to sleep out here.”

“You know, under these twinkling lights your skin glows like the moon.”

“Oh God,” she groaned. “Your lines are getting worse.”

“I thought that was my best work yet.” He sat up, leaning over. “Your lips look so lonely—”

With a groan, she leaned over and kissed him.

“Hey, you didn’t let me finish.”

“I think I knew where that was going.”

“So what am I thinking right now?” he asked.

“Something we are not doing out here with your enforcers close by.”

He sighed. “You’re right. After all, you are a yeller.”

She smacked her hand against his chest. “I am not.”

  * * * * *

Days went by without incident, and Laney started to think that they’d all overreacted about what had happened in the basement.

She walked into the house. All she wanted was a blistering hot shower and to crawl into bed with her sexy mate so he could hold her tight.

But it wasn’t to be. As she entered the house, she could hear the low murmur of voices from the study and knew at least one of Cooper’s enforcers was inside. Moving to the door, she knocked lightly before entering to find all of them inside.

“Reed!” she cried out, moving toward him. He stood up and hugged her tightly. “You’re back. How did the other meetings go?”

“Good. I was just telling the others what I found at Paterson’s estate.”

  “What?”

  “Suzanne.”

  She gaped at him. “Seriously?”

He nodded. “Seems to be quite friendly with Paterson, too. The bitch.”

“Paterson?” She had to work hard to keep the revulsion from showing on her face. “What do you think that means?”

“I don’t know, but it can’t be good,” Reed said. “I heard some rumors, some of Paterson’s wolves said he’s not happy with Cooper for taking the pack and killing Zachary.”

“They were friends.” As much as someone could be friends with Zachary.

“Do you think he’s a threat?” she asked.

“I don’t know,” Reed answered. “But I’m going to prepare for the worst. Paterson is coming to the meeting so he might make a move against Cooper. Security will already be tight, but neither Laney nor Cooper can be left alone with him.”

“If he wants to challenge me, I’m prepared to take him.”

She looked worriedly at Cooper. He could easily take Paterson. If Paterson fought fair. But he wouldn’t fight fear. Worry tightened her stomach. The enforcers wouldn’t be the only ones keeping a close eye on Paterson.

  * * * * *

Pleasure filled her, making her whimper. She opened her eyes, staring up at the off-white ceiling. Her legs were spread as she lay on her back. Cooper lay between her legs, sucking on her clit. The orgasm washed over, in soft waves at first then building to a crescendo.

Cooper raised himself up over her, smiling down at her. “Good morning.”

“Good morning,” she said dreamily. “What a way to wake up. I could get used to that.”

  “Me too.”

He leaned over to the drawer and pulled out a vibrator.

“Oh, dear Lord, you have to be kidding. You are not using that on me.”

“Well, it’s not going near me.” There was a buzzing noise before he slowly pushed the vibrator inside her sheath.

She jumped as part of the vibrator buzzed against her clit. She let out a long, low moan as he chuckled.

“Like that, do you, sweet? It has a clit tickler attached. But you can’t come yet. Wait until I give you permission.” Laney bit her lip—how the hell was she supposed to stop herself from coming? She was already so close, and that clit tickler was going to send her over.

He held the vibrator inside her, filling her, letting the clit tickler tormenter her. Then he drew the vibrator out and thrust it back inside her. In and out. Until she was trembling with need, her breath rasping in and out of her lungs.

“Oh hell, I cannot wait to feel you around me. I’m so hungry for you.” Cooper drew the vibrator away from her pussy then entered her in one huge thrust.

Laney cried out at the feel of him filling her. Her pussy pulsed around him. She was on edge. She needed to come.

“You feel so good, Laney, so hot and tight that I’ve got to stop myself from coming straight away.”

He moved slowly in and out, building up speed.

“Cooper,” she called out, lost, drowning in her arousal, in the feelings coursing through her body. She needed an anchor, so she called out to the one person she knew would always answer her.

“I’m here, sweet, and I have never felt anything more incredible. I’ll catch you. I will always catch you. Come. Take your pleasure.”

Laney let herself go, Cooper thrusting inside her. She lost herself in the sensations, gave herself over to orgasm, let it spiral out of control. She felt Cooper come as well, his essence flooding her as her muscles pumped down on his cock.

  Chapter Thirteen

Laney stood beside her mate, greeting the visiting Alphas. They’d begun arriving that afternoon, and most were staying for the weekend to discuss forming a new council. It would have been a hell of a lot easier to have this meeting in another pack’s territory. Let them worry about security and safety. However, this was Cooper’s baby, and it was up to the Shadowpeak pack to make sure everyone remained safe and behaved themselves.

Tomorrow, Cooper would lead the talks about how the new council would work. The Western States Council had disintegrated through distrust and infighting. She knew that the council the Lian pack was part of was formidable, and she trusted Cooper to ensure that part ran smoothly.

But before then she had to get everyone through dinner and the welcoming ceremony, which was no mean feat, especially with her own wolves fighting against her. Just then she noticed Jayda flirting with a wolf from another pack across the room, the tray of food she was supposed to be circulating sitting forgotten on the table beside her.

“You gonna let her get away with disrespecting you like that?” Laney turned her head slightly, looking up at Dusty, who had moved to stand beside her when Cooper had walked away to talk with the Alpha of the Arcan pack.

“She’ll pick it up in a moment.” Laney attempted to excuse the other wolf, knowing it was a false hope.

“This ain’t no high-society tea, Laney. You’ve got to earn their respect or else they’ll constantly walk all over you.” Strangely, Dusty’s voice wasn’t derogatory or condescending.

“Are you trying to give me advice?” Laney asked, amazed. The redhead shrugged.

“I thought you’d want me to fail. You hate me.”

Dusty turned to her, her gaze serious as she looked down at the smaller woman. “I don’
t hate you, Laney. I thought I did because I hated him, and you were a part of him. I didn’t realize that he’d made your life hell as well, that you are nothing like he was. I guess in a way that I was jealous.”

“Jealous?” Laney realized that her jaw had dropped in shock and quickly slammed it shut.

“Because you were strong enough to get away, while I was too much of a coward.”

Laney pondered that for a moment. She’d been jealous of Dusty’s strength, her confidence. To find out that all this time the other woman had felt the same toward her shocked her.

“I’m sorry for whatever he did to you.”

Dusty gazed down at her, her gaze ferocious. “Don’t ever apologize for him. Just don’t.”

Laney cleared her throat, deciding to change the subject. “I thought you were patrolling outside tonight.”

Dusty sneered. “Cain ‘insisted’ on taking over. Damn man’s entirely too bossy for his own good.” With that, she turned on her heel and walked away, and Laney was left staring at the bitch flirting across the room, not caring that everyone could see her clear disregard of her Alpha’s mate.

Gathering her courage, she moved over to stand behind the disobedient wolf.

“Jayda.” She spoke firmly, aware of all the eyes following her, her own packs’ and others’.

“What?” the female wolf responded sullenly, not even bothering to turn around.

“You’re supposed to be circulating with that food, not flirting.”

“If you’re so concerned about feeding everyone, why don’t you do it?”

There were gasps of shock around them at the disrespectful reply. For all that they were reasonably civilized, they were still part wolf, and you did not disrespect the Alpha’s mate.

Laney felt her wolf rise, felt the power that was all hers spill from her onto the weaker wolf. Jayda fell to her knees, laying her forehead on the ground, her body shaking in reaction.

“I’m sorry, I apologize, I apologize.” Laney just nodded, aware that she couldn’t weaken her stance by comforting the distraught wolf.
