Chapter 1
Judge Lee
I was in shock as I stared into the eyes of a younger version of me. With the exception of her darker skin complexion, there was no doubt in my mind that she was the little girl that I gave birth to eighteen years ago. The look on her face matched the one that was probably on mine as we shared an intense gaze. The room started spinning as I felt my temperature began to rise.
“Judge Lee, are you okay?” I heard someone say, but I couldn’t answer.
The walls started to close in on me as I began to hyperventilate. I tried to reach for my seat but instead I felt my body hit the ground with a loud thud. The bailiff rushed over to me and started speaking what sounded like gibberish. With thoughts of my daughter on my mind, I fought a losing battle with the heaviness of my eyelids before they finally closed.

“I’m glad to see you’re back with us,” a nurse said while standing over me.
“What happened?” I asked.
“You passed out due to your high blood pressure. It was 140/90, you could have had a stroke,” she fussed. “I see that you have a history of high blood pressure, have you been keeping up with your medicine?”
“Yes I have. May I please have a sip of water?” I asked attempting to sit up.
“Mom, are you okay?” my daughter asked bursting through the door.
“Yes baby, I’m fine,” I said waving her off. “Water please.”
The nurse poured me a cup of ice water and handed it to me. Grabbing the straw between my lips, I sipped the cool liquid to ease my dry throat. I could feel my daughter and the nurse burning a hole through me, but I chose to ignore them.
“I have to get back to the court house,” I frantically said, remembering my daughter.
Karrueche, I chuckled to myself. What would have possessed Karl to name our daughter that? The more I pictured her face in my head, the more I realized that the name fit her to the T.
“Judge Lee, I’m sorry but we don’t recommend you leave until your doctor comes in and evaluates you,” the nurse said.
“I’m fine. Bring me the discharge papers now, I’m signing myself out,” I demanded as I rolled my eyes.
“Mom, do you think that is wise?” my daughter asked once the nurse left my room.
“Nao please, I know how to take care of myself. I don’t need a doctor to tell me what I already know.”
“But mom-”
“Can you bring me back to the courthouse?” I asked while redressing in my black silk Versace dress. Stuffing my stockings in my bag, I slipped my bare feet in my black pumps. I felt myself get a little dizzy, so I took another sip of the ice-cold water and prepared to leave. As I walked to the nurse’s station to sign my discharged papers, I could hear the doctor calling me. Ignoring him, I grabbed my at home instructions and strutted to the elevators.
My daughter didn’t utter a word as we made our way to her midnight black Mercedes Benz. Hearing the chirping of her alarm, I pulled open the passenger door and slipped my body against the soft interior. I immediately became pissed off at my poor decisions. When Karrueche was born, my husband was aware of my infidelities and gave me an ultimatum. With the help of the nurses at the hospital where she was born, I lied and said that the baby died during child birth. I then had her delivered to her father’s doorstep, with a note attached begging him to take great care of her. I offered to send him money to care for her in return that he keeps my secret, but he declined.
Karma finally caught up with me when my husband, got his mistress pregnant. The only difference with his case was the fact that he decided to leave me and our daughter to be with her. For years, I ignored the fact that I gave up my daughter for a man who turned around and left me anyway.
Now that my life was back on track after suffering a terrible divorce, I was ready to be in my daughter’s life. After hearing of the death of her father, I had plans on tracking her down, however fate brought us together. As I looked over at my twenty four year old daughter, who was singing loudly to a Chris Brown song, I wondered how I was going to explain to her that her baby sister didn’t die during birth. The thought of all my lies coming to light caused me to become dizzy again.
When we made it to the courthouse, I headed to the back office to look over Karrueche’s case. I saw that she was on trial for murder of a police officer and that the prosecutor was trying to have her bail revoked due to her being a flight risk. I pulled out my phone to make some calls because I had to look into the face of my baby girl and talk to her before making any decisions that could have me disbarred.
“Nao, you can leave now,” I said to my daughter, who stood by the door looking at me as if I was crazy.
“I thought you only came here to pick up your car.” She frowned.
“I don’t need you to babysit me while I drive home. I’m capable of getting to my destination.”
“Mom, you need to start taking better care of yourself. Ever since you and dad got divorced you seem to only focus on work,” she argued.
“Nao, go damn!” I yelled, walking pass her.
I hit the remote to unlock my white Lincoln Navigator before hopping inside and pulling off. I headed to the jailhouse where Karrueche was being held. After I checked in and processed into the system, I took a seat in the private visiting room to wait for her to join me. The thought of my daughter being in such a disgusting place made my skin crawl.
“You have two hours, Judge Lee,” Tom a good friend of mine said.
“Thank you,” I replied before giving him a wink that informed him that money would be wired to his account.
I watched as Karrueche slowly pulled out the chair and took a seat in front of me. The scowl that she wore was understandable. I co
uld only imagine what it must have felt like to find out that your mother was alive all along. I’m not sure what story Karl told her, but I hoped it was the one of me dying during childbirth like I instructed him to say.
“What did they do to you?” I asked, noticing a faint bruise on her arm.
“Why do you care? You didn’t want me anyway,” she stated as she sucked her teeth.
“Naqoi don’t say such a thing,” I replied, blinking back the tears that threatened to fall.
“My name is Karrueche not Naqoi,” she replied cutting her eyes at me.
Naqoi was that name I picked out for her. I didn’t realize I slipped and called her that.
“Sorry,” I replied and meaning it.
“What do you want?” She asked.
“I want to explain everything to you.”
“It’s fine, my father already explained to me why you gave me up.”
“It wasn’t that simple.”
“Then why did you do it?!” She raised her voice.
“My back was against the wall. I was so in love with Noe that I was willing to do everything for him, even if it meant giving you to your father to raise. He knew you didn’t belong to him so he threatened to leave and speak of my infidelities. I know that wasn’t a good enough reason for me to give you up years later, but love will make you do stupid things,” I explained.
I saw her face soften as if she understood what I was saying about love and the stupid decisions you can make because of it.
“Na- I mean Karrueche, I want to help you but first I need to ask if you are guilty?” I asked and fearing the answer.
“No,” she softly replied, looking me in the eye. “I hate it in here. Hell I don’t even understand why they would accuse me of such a terrible crime. I don’t even know an Officer Brad and I had no reason to kill him.” She cried.
The way her sobs vibrated through the small room confirmed that she was innocent. Being a judge for ten years, I had a way of seeing though a person’s lies. I could tell by the tone of your voice and your body language if you were innocent or not. Most liars are able to alter the emotion in their voice to make you believe their story, but they can never match it with their body language. The way Karrueche sat as she cried made me believe her.
“What happened to your arm?” I asked.
“The police officers roughed me around while they arrested me. I told them they were hurting me, but it was like they were trying to get back at me for a crime, I didn’t commit,” she replied.
“I’m going to fix this, I promise.”
“Why?” She asked.
“I owe you this much and I missed out on so much. I wasn’t there for you when your father died, I didn’t reach out to you when I could have. This is the least I could do for you,” I said.
The mention of her father caused her to tense up. I could tell it was still a touchy subject for her. I made a mental note not to bring him up unless she initiated that conversation.
“Can I have a hug?” The words slipped from my lips before I could catch them.
“You can’t buy my love,” she said before walking towards the door and banging on it.
I completely understood that it would take a lot of time before we hatched things out and repaired our relationship. I gave Tom a head nod, letting him know that our visit was over. I was crushed that she ended the visit early, but I respected that she needed time to allow everything to register. As I made my way to the car, I emailed both Karrueche’s lawyer and the prosecutor to let them know that court would be resuming in the morning. I was going to make sure that Karrueche’s lawyer buried the Fort Lauderdale Police Department so deep that they would need a bulldozer to dig them out. I smelled a hefty lawsuit coming their way and it was only right I made all of this happen; after all, she is my daughter.
Chapter 2
Karrueche
I laid my body down on the stiff, musty cot as I tried to wrap my mind around everything that happened. Last I heard of my mother, she was living that fancy life with her daughter and husband in Ohio. The fact that she was down here in charge of my case caught me a bit off guard. A part of me felt relief since I knew justice finally would be served and I would be going home, while the other part of me was pissed. I understood where she was coming from when she mentioned love making you do crazy things; however, I would have never allowed love to force me into giving my child away.
My mind went from my mother to Smoke. As much as I wanted to forget about him and focus on Dale, I couldn’t. I could still feel his soft lips against mine as I remembered the kiss we shared. My heart was temporarily with Dale when I knew for a fact Smoke should be the one with full custody over it. I drew a list of pros and cons of each men in my heart and imagined how it would be if I chose one over the other. My mind was filled with so much confusion, that it shut off while I drifted off to sleep.
The next morning I was awaken by Tash, one of the morning correctional officers. She was more laid back then the others, so my morning already started off on a good note. She led me to the bathroom facility where I was allowed to take a fifteen minute shower. After scrubbing my skin raw, I was led to a room where there was a breakfast of eggs, grits, and bacon. My stomach began to growl so I sat down and devoured the food. Once I was down to my last drop of orange juice, Tash pulled out a flat iron and began fixing my hair. No words were spoken between us as she did her best to fix the nest that sat on top of my head.
“Get dressed,” she said, pointing to a black dress bag that hung on the back of the door.
With a full stomach, I rose from my chair and walked over to where the bag was located. Unzipping it, I gasped at the content inside while pulling them out. There was a very expensive black and gold Gucci pants suit with a pair of gold red bottoms next to it. I quickly dressed in the soft fabric and did my best to examine myself in the bathroom mirror. A tube of lipstick would have been nice, I though as I pouted my full bare lips while running my fingers through my pixie cut as I fixed the side bang.
* * *
When we walked in the courtroom this time I was less nervous. I looked over at my support team and everyone was there except Shantika, Journi, and Smoke. I was disappointed Smoke wasn’t here to support me, but more hurt when I realized I still didn’t know the status of my best friend. Dale gave me a reassuring smile and blew me a kiss before I took my seat. Judge Lee walked in then took her seat. Today her makeup was flawless and her short choppy bob was laid to perfection. The more I studied her, the more I could see where I inherited my beauty. Don’t get me wrong my father was a handsome man, but the woman who birthed me was beautiful.
“Today we are here to discuss Karrueche’s bail,” my mother said pulling her Coach frames from her eyes.
“Your Honor, I would like to file a motion to have all charges against my client dropped,” my lawyer spoke up.
“I OBJECT!” The prosecutor yelled.
“Overruled counselor. Under what circumstances?” my mother asked my lawyer.
“For one the police illegally searched my client’s car. Secondly, there are no fingerprints on the alleged murder weapon. Last but not least, they can’t get in contact with the person who left the tip which leaves them without a witness to testify.”
“Mr. Jimson, is this true?” My mother asked the prosecutor
“Yes but-”
“But nothing, everything that was illegally found in the search is thrown out. Is there anything else you have here on the defendant that would revoke her getting bail or this entire case thrown out for that matter?” She asked as she pursed her lips together.
“No, Your Honor.”
“Then I grant the motion to dismiss this case.”
“Another thing Your Honor, I would also like to file a lawsuit against the police department for excessive and unnecessary force,” my lawyer said while holding up some papers.
“You may approach the bench,” my mother said.
&
nbsp; I watched with a rapidly beating heart as my lawyer got up and handed my mother the papers. I watched as she flipped through the thick packet with a slight smirk on her face. A part of me strongly believed all of this was her doing.
“Looks like you got a lawsuit to fight against counselor,” my mother said before giving the paperwork to the bailiff to give to the prosecutor.
“Karrueche, you are free to go,” she said before banging her gravel.
I jumped up for joy and hugged my lawyer. The fact that I no longer had to go back to that small jail cell had me skipping to the door. I rushed over to Dale who kissed me deeply on the lips before letting me go. I could feel eyes on me so I looked back to see my mother watching. I gave her a quick head nod before walking over to the Michael’s and giving them my love.
“Where is Shantika?” I asked.
“She’s in the hospital,” Mrs. Michael replied.
“I know that but are you going to tell me what happened?”
“Somebody set her house on fire,” Mts. Michael explained
“Oh God, nooooooo!” A big wail escaped my lips causing everyone in the courtroom to look my way. Grabbing Dale’s hand, I practically dragged him to the car. Instead of getting in the passenger sit, I jumped in the driver spot and floored it to the hospital. Tears clouded my vision as I crookedly parked the car. Leaving Dale in the car, I ran inside to the nurse’s station.
“I’m here to see Shantika. Oh God, please tell me she’s okay,” I cried.
“Calm down ma’am. I need you to spell her name for me,” the nurse said with sympathy in her eyes.
After spelling off Shantika’s name, I impatiently tapped my foot against the tile as I waited to get my visitor’s badge. Before she could give me directions on how to get to Shantika’s room, I was already banging on the elevator button. Praying for my friend, I paced the massive elevator as I waited for the ding to signify I was at my stop.
When I got off the elevator, I ran right into Journi. His eyes were blood shot red as if he hasn’t slept in weeks. His clothes were wrinkled and he looked stressed .
