Amy's Redemption

Page 19

by B J Wane

Amy closed her eyes in defeat. He had used the one threat she was powerless against. There was no way she would risk anything happening to RJ, or one of the boys. She always knew her past would catch up to her one day and mar any peace or happiness she had found, she just wished she had had a little longer, a few more memories to sustain her.

“What do you want me to do?”

“Somehow I knew you’d cooperate. You’re to leave, right now, and drive to the Bar Six motel on Highway 93. Room 12. Jed’ll be waiting for you and as soon as I pick up my check, I’ll meet you there. Don’t talk to anyone, don’t pack anything. Just get in your fucking car and drive. And remember, it’s your word against mine that this little conversation ever took place.”

She’d remember she thought as she all but ran to do his bidding. She’d remember, and she’d find a way, no matter how long it took or what she had to do, to get away from them again.

Mike entered the barn as Amy came flying out. Her small body was shaking and tears streaked her face as she ran right into him. “Amy! What the hell happened?” he exclaimed.

“Nothing, Mike. I’m fine. Please, let me go.” Amy broke away from him, but not before he saw the livid red mark on her arm that was already bruising. His eyes turned stormy and his hands clenched tightly, but before he could demand an explanation, she quickly pleaded, “Please, Mike, let it go. I’m fine.” Hoping he would do as she asked, she walked quickly into the house, grabbed her purse and keys off the entry table and ran back outside. Without a backward glance, she got into her car, thankful that it was in decent running condition and left the Kincaid Ranch the same way she had entered it, with nothing.

Mike stormed into the stables and saw Carl heading to the bunk house, presumably to gather his things. Turning swiftly, he jogged out of the stable in time to seeing Amy leaving in her old car, one she hadn’t driven in weeks. Making a quick decision, he jumped in his truck while dialing RJ’s extension on his cell phone.

“Kincaid,” he answered on the first ring.

“Boss, something’s up, but I don’t know what.” Mike explained seeing Amy bruised and upset, then leaving in her car. Since Carl was the only one around, he suggested RJ question him while he followed her to make sure she was all right.

RJ hung up the phone and shoved back from his desk. The temporary hires were supposed to come by for their pay, but he’d be damned if he waited on Carl. Storming from his office, he barreled over to the bunk house, rage and fear burning a hole in his gut. Slamming the door against the wall, he strode over to Carl, grabbed him by the shirt and hauled him against the wall with a thud.

“What the fuck did you do to Amy?”

Carl’s eyes widened in fear. He knew he was looking at a severe beating, if not death, and couldn’t believe she had the nerve to go against Jedidiah’s wishes, especially knowing what they were both capable of. “Whatever she told you, ain’t true,” he gasped as he tried to pull RJ’s hand away from his throat.

“She didn’t tell me a damn thing, you son of a bitch, but you’re going to.”

Carl would have continued to try wheedling his way out of this if it had been just RJ, but behind him stood every damn hand on his ranch, each glaring at him with hatred and retribution.

“You know, RJ,” Gary said as he moved to stand next to him. “The mishaps around here all started after Carl here came to work. Isn’t that right, Carl?”

Carl was now sweating profusely and trying to think of a way out of this while struggling for breath. He wasn’t having much luck with either.

“You’ve got five seconds to start talking. After that, the boys and I are going to show you what we do to men who mistreat our livestock and, much more importantly, our girl,” RJ threatened in a very soft, very convincing tone.

The hell with it, Carl thought. Jed didn’t pay him enough to get the shit beat out of him by a gang of pussy whipped cowboys. He talked, and when he finished, he whimpered as RJ smashed his fist first into his stomach and then his jaw, breaking the bone and knocking him out cold.

RJ dropped Carl and ran to his truck, followed by the rest of his hands. Rick jumped into his truck with him, and after giving instructions to the rest to keep an eye on Carl, Rory and Gary followed in another truck. His phone rang fifteen minutes later, and not a minute too soon. His fear and worry for Amy was eating him alive and he needed to know she was all right.

“Where is she, Mike? We’re about thirty miles out.” Mike told him Amy had just pulled into the Motel Six and was sitting in her car. After RJ relayed what Carl had told him, Mike hung up to call Mitch. RJ alternated between swearing and praying as he sped down the highway. When he got her back to the ranch, he was going to blister her ass so she wouldn’t be able to sit for a week for not trusting him, that is after he held her so tightly she would have no doubt about him ever letting her go.

RJ, Rick, Rory and Gary pulled into the motel’s parking lot fifteen minutes later, the same time as Mitch did. Mike was pacing in front of room 12 and looked relieved to see them. “Where is she?” RJ demanded when he saw Amy wasn’t in her car.

“I tried to stop her boss, but she got hysterical. Swore to me she’s here of own free will and demanded I leave.”

“Mitch,” RJ growled at his brother.

“Calm down,” Mitch snapped as he strode to the door and pounded on it. “Police! Open up!”

When they heard a roar of rage followed by Amy’s cry of pain, both Mitch and RJ kicked the door open. RJ saw red when he spotted Amy picking herself up from the floor, her right cheek red and swelling visibly.

“You fucking bastard!” Before RJ could get to the man who was staring at them in contempt, Mitch interceded and grabbed the man’s arms, cuffing them behind his back.

“You’re under arrest for assault,” he stated calmly, though it was hard to keep his own anger in check.

“No!” Amy stared aghast at RJ and the others, her cheek throbbing painfully right along with her heart. “RJ, please, you don’t understand,” she pleaded, fear for him uppermost in her mind. Jedidiah was just as self righteous, and just as fanatical as he was two years ago, and she knew what he was capable of.

“That’s right Kincaid,” Jed sneered. “You don’t understand. Did your dirty little whore tell you how she sold herself to strangers on the street, and then, when that didn’t get her enough, she turned to stripping for a living? I bet you didn’t know exactly how many men have seen your precious little cook naked, did you? Did she tell you how she assaulted me with a lamp and left me for dead?”

Amy’s face paled to chalk white before turning bright red, and RJ wanted nothing more than to shove this guys teeth down his throat for all the pain he had caused her. Reigning in his temper, he looked from Amy’s tear ravaged face to the man she had been running from for over two years.

“I’ll assume that was after you twisted her arm until it snapped. I believe that would have made it self defense. What’d you think, Sheriff?”

“Sounds about right to me. We can add that assault to the charges of kidnapping and arson. And then, there’s the charge of murder waiting for him back in Cleveland.”

As Jedidiah sputtered his innocence and tried to blame everything on either her or Carl, Amy realized that not only had RJ known about her arm, he hadn’t seemed surprised or shocked in the least about her sordid past. Gazing back at him with drenched eyes, she whispered, “How long have you known?”

“Since yesterday morning.” RJ was dying to go to her and hold her. She looked like she was ready to collapse. But it was her call, her decision where they went from here. The boys were behind him, both literally and figuratively, and she had to be aware of their support also.

It only took a moment, then it dawned on her. He had told her he loved her last night – after he had learned about her past. Without even knowing all the details, why she did what she did, he still loved her. Amy’s eyes finally looked at the other hands and she saw nothing but acceptance and caring.<

“I love you too,” she finally admitted in a wobbly, but clear voice.

“About fucking time.” RJ strode to her and enfolded her in his arms, Amy’s watery giggle against his neck making him smile.

“Are you always hard?” she whispered.

“Can’t help it sweetheart. Hearing you say you love me got me all excited.”

“Get your hands off her, you pervert,” Jedidiah shouted as Mitch started to lead him out. “She’s mine, do you hear? Mine!”

Amy pulled away from RJ and stated with calm, cold finality, “Jedidiah, I am not now nor have I ever been yours. Now, shut the fuck up.”

As they all filed back to their vehicles, RJ put his arm around Amy and, to her everlasting amusement, admonished her, saying, “Don’t say ‘fuck’, Amy.”
