Summer's Mermaid (Mermaid series Book 3)

"Kirk is dead, my sweet Lily. There is nothing I or anyone can do for him. When I went back to old America, I couldn’t find his body. It was strange... when we left him it was as if a super magnet had stuck him to the floor of that tunnel, immoveable by any force I could bring to bear upon it. Now, it is missing. Someone or something managed to move it.
"I would have brought him back before if it was at all possible. Old America is a dangerous place to travel now what with the demise of Micah's machines. There are sand dunes covering all of old New York City which makes travel treacherous. I imagine the rains will wash all those horrid things away given enough time.
"Kirk's body is not going to decompose like other dead bodies. The nanobots impregnated his skin and turned it to metal. It happened in a matter of minutes, right before my eyes. I imagine even his bones are made of steel now. It is a terrible tragedy and I wish I had never asked him to come with me, but he saved my life. If not for pushing me out of the way, I would have been the one swarmed under, not him."
"You shouldn’t feel guilty, my darling Nate. We saved his life too. If not for your vote and mine Kirk would have been exiled from Orchardton Hall centuries ago."
"I would like to remain here a while at Orchardton Hall, my sweet Lily. I've missed this place."
She couldn’t be sure that was what she wanted but she had never wanted to hurt anyone and she had never been an adept at saying no. So Nate stayed on after that though she never quite managed to rekindle the love she once felt for him.
