Murder Over Cocktails: The 2nd Nikki Hunter Mystery (Nikki Hunter Mysteries)

Jack was grinning like the cat who’d swallowed the canary, or maybe the cat who’d just had his way with my best friend.
“I’m buying that charming little estate in Hillsborough,” he said.
I looked at Jack, stunned, then turned to Elizabeth who was glowing.
“Are you kidding me?”
“Isn’t it amazing?” she purred. “That beautiful house is going to be Jack’s, and I might visit, occasionally.” She kissed him noisily and his grin widened. “And the Richters have agreed to stay!” she added.
Elizabeth was clearly overjoyed. She had made a remarkably swift recovery from last night’s trauma. What could I do? Despite my misgivings, I love happy endings. I nudged K.C. off my lap, got up, and shook Jack’s hand. “Congratulations,” I said. That felt banal, so I grabbed him and gave him a hug. “I’m sorry I didn’t believe you,” I whispered, and I started crying again.
Elizabeth wrapped her arms around me from behind and Jack held the hug from the other side. Cradled between the two of them, I realized that Bill and Elizabeth had both been right. Having taken a life I would never be the same, but, eventually, everything was going to be okay.
~THE END~
